Bill Self tops in Efficiency Margin in last 5, 10 years
No surprise to many of us here, but nice to see the numbers confirm what we all knew: that HCBS is the best coach in the nation.

It's nice to see, but
as we all know, what people care about is what do you do in the tournament.
Unfortunately, people will always focus on the let downs. Especially when you have far superior teams.
When Roy was at KU there was a big deal about “getting the monkey off the back” and advancing deep in the tournament. People outside of Kentucka think of Calipari as the guy who can’t get to a Final Four without eventually having to forfeit the appearance.
Stats are nice, production in March/April is better. And more memorable.

And that's not a slight to Self
He’s almost a victim of his own creation. He over-achieves so often with what he has during the regular season that everyone expects that to continue through the tournament.
I wouldn’t trade HCBS for anyone, but sometimes we as KU fans need to temper our expectations. Unfortunately, the rest of the college basketball fandom doesn’t do that. They see what you’re seeded and expectations are set.
It’s not always easy being a Kansas basketball fan, but damn is it nice. And I, like you, am grateful.

I remember talking about this in a post last year.
We are a 1 or 2 seed almost every year. So if we don’t win the tournament “we under-achieved”. Yet if accept that every 1 and 2 seed has an equal chance of winning the tourament and even those seeds have only a 75% chance, then you would only expect to win three times every 32 years or about once a decade.
Because we are almost always a 1 or 2 seed we never have chance to “over-achieve”. Given the choice of having great seasons and being disappointed in late march, early april (like the other 63 67) or having many medicore seasons and geting really excited every once in a while by a miracle run to the final four, I will take the former.
I always drink the Kool-Aid
Going for #8 in a row!

In the long run, I don't really think this is true.
Boeheim has a long history of crappy tournament performances (lots of great teams, but just the one title and a couple of the biggest upsets in tournament history), but he’s widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches in the game because his teams are competing for conference championships year in and year out.
I do think that the tournament looms large in recent memory, but I think that effect fades over time and overall record becomes the dominant factor.
Not everyone puts as much weight on the tournament
It’s frustrating to see Duke and UNC with more Final Four appearances, but the overall wins and league titles are just as impressive.
