Oklahoma State upsets No. 2 Missouri 79-72 - KansasCity.com
This is pretty big at the moment. Saturday's game presents a huge opportunity. Take care of business in Ames, hold serve against Oklahoma at home and we head to Columbia at 9-0 with a 2 game lead half way through the conference season. Sounds great, but boy does that game in Ames on Saturday worry me.

Major Conference Teams in the KP top 25:

PAC-12: 1/12
Big East: 3/16
SEC: 3/12
B1G Ten: 4/12
ACC: 4/12
Big 12: 5/10

Smallest major conference, most schools in top 25. Not bad for what was supposed to be a down year.

by sax solo on Jan 26, 2012 6:21 AM CST reply actions

To be fair,

this has to be considered a down year for college basketball as a whole. But still, quite the statement for our conference.

Down year?

Interesting that it would be considered a down year when so many top players choose not to enter the draft last year b/c of the NBA labor issues. That is, except for the Big12, where most of UT & KU left.

I don't think they're a tourney team...

but I’m pretty sure they’re the top 25 team sax was referring to. I expect us to get 4 in the tourney unless ISU makes a run.

by hiphopopotamus on Jan 26, 2012 8:34 AM CST up reply actions

I like the top 3 to make at least the Sweet 16 (unless MU runs into a juggernaught of a big, or Baylor plays lazy)

K-State maybe not, but if the Cats get a good draw and don’t derp it up for 10 minutes as they’re wont to do, I think all the top 4 have a really good shot at Sweet 16+.

Yeah, and I really don't get why.

I lost a great deal of respect for the Big 10 when one of their ranked teams recently lost to a weak Arkansas team that OU pummelled earlier this year. Granted, it was in Arkansas but still not a good performance.

Hogs are unbeaten at home

But have some bad road losses, including blowouts with OU, UConn and Kentucky. Still, the Big 12 teams have better road wins than Big Ten, and that says a lot.

That was after dealing with all those travel nightmares that teams like Purdue and Michigan went through

They went into that game with something like 3 hours of sleep and arrived the day of the game. Tough to win on the road when you get breaks like that.

by dester30 on Jan 26, 2012 8:04 AM CST reply actions

here, here!

It helps that they are mizzoo, but it is soooo fun to see the posers fall.

They have some really good guards, which can overwhelm lesser teams, but a team with inside and outside players that can play D should be able to handle them without tremendous problem. Their SOS is still pathetic halfway thru the conf season.

by dagger108 on Jan 26, 2012 9:59 AM CST up reply actions

I'm still not sold that they are a pretender so to speak.

I think they have some veteran leadership and they are very athletic. Yes they have weaknesses, but they are a solid team and in a year where there aren’t a lot of really great teams….they are right there in the conversation.

That said, last night was big.

I agree. I think they're a top 15 team

And capable of beating us, even in Allen.

That said, I think we’re a whole lot more likely to sweep them, than they are to sweep us.

by jayhawk3r on Jan 26, 2012 10:13 AM CST up reply actions

well yes.

I really see it as a split this year. But if one of the two is capable of the sweet it’s us because of the size factor and of course AFH.

I’d put it at 15% chance we sweep
5% chance they sweep.

by Owen on Jan 26, 2012 10:19 AM CST up reply actions

I agree with those percentages . . .

I like that we go to their place first. I always hate the return trips after we get a home win (see Ames, Manhattan, and Waco).

I think they are good

But how good is Haith at making adjustments when they’re down, or even struggling? Haven’t seen much to show he can, other than maybe the Illinois game.

by jayhawk1996 on Jan 26, 2012 10:17 AM CST up reply actions

good point...

and I would never point to an Illinois game because Bruce Weber seems incapable of beating Mizzou lately. They have been a disaster in that game in situations where they should win.

Easy now...

We’ve played the easiest schedule in the conference, to date. Lots of tough roadies still in front of us.

But like you say, there’s a pretty clear template of how to beat Missouri and we have the personnel to execute.

by hiphopopotamus on Jan 26, 2012 10:29 AM CST up reply actions

Soooooooooooo overrated

SOS in the 200’s half wway thru conf. is pathetic.

by dagger108 on Jan 26, 2012 10:10 AM CST up reply actions

Correction - SOS actually all the way up to 96

Only top 10 team that is worse – UK @ 117.
Only top 10 team with few top 25 games – Orange @ 2 (vs. 3 for mizzoo).

Also from the Big 12 – the worst D in the conference – almost 50%. Even BU is better.

by dagger108 on Jan 26, 2012 11:19 PM CST up reply actions

I gotta say I'm impressed with our ranking right now.

The way the season started, I never thought we’d be the top 2-3 spots of KenPom/Sagarin at any point of the season. Huge credit to the team and coach.

Well, don't ask Mizzou fans.
The same refs won’t call another game for us again

Somebody asks how he’s so sure, he comes up with this gem:

I meant that they will change up positions, the same men will not be in the same positions

I’m an apologist, I know this and it’s because I work a lot as an official. But what in the world does somebody mean when they say the officials won’t be in the same position again? It’s shit like this that makes me laugh when people bitch about officials because it goes to show that a vast majority of the bitching takes place from a POV that is clueless.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
Rock Chalk Talk

by Warden11 on Jan 26, 2012 12:02 PM CST up reply actions

It's odd that you could watch closely enough to hate specific officials

And yet not notice that that same hated official is not always in the same place on the court.

Honestly, I think it’s just the product of a football-centric fanbase. Or maybe baseball, since I can’t really think of any other sport where the officials rotate positions.

In any case, I’m glad that RCT has far far less complaining about the officiating than RMN does. MU fans that KU fans always say that any team we lost to is far better than people realize, but I infinitely prefer that “excuse” to complaining that there’s some sort of conspiracy by the officials against us (or, in the case of complaining about the officiating in games MU isn’t even playing in, in favor of KU).

by KSinDC on Jan 26, 2012 12:35 PM CST up reply actions

All I ask of officials

is consistency. Call the game close – or not. Just make it the same for both teams for the entire game.
Blaming refs for your team’s losses – or KU’s wins – is just another way of saying you’re a bad sport.

by jayhawk1996 on Jan 26, 2012 12:44 PM CST up reply actions

I dunno

I think there are moments when ref bitching is warranted. As for a vast zebra conspiracy, no. 3 or 4 calls that don’t go your way, definately.

The name of that song played at KC Comets games in the '80's was Giorgio Moroder's "The Chase." Now you know.

by labbadabba on Jan 26, 2012 1:07 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly

Officials make bad calls, and when they go against you it’s frustrating, but complaining that the refs are consistently against you is just conspiracy thinking.

I also think people who focus on the refs way way overstate the effect of home court officiating. Home court advantage is measurable, and it’s not that big (3.5 points on average, 5.5 points at AFH), and officiating is only a part of that.

by KSinDC on Jan 26, 2012 1:18 PM CST up reply actions

There are 3 or 4 calls that don't go your way out of a few hundred possible calls every night.

Out of those 3 or 4, maybe 1 or 2 are actually bad calls. Definitely not enough to fixate on as some do.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
Rock Chalk Talk

by Warden11 on Jan 26, 2012 2:03 PM CST up reply actions

The no-call on the first dunk was strange.

First play of the game.

Kim English is outside the circle, but not set by the time Brown is leaving the ground. I think that makes it a block but it’s pretty close to a 50/50 situation.

Brown slams right into English. How can there be NO foul there?

The announcers were verrry circumspect when criticizing the referees. There was another foul that was pretty obviously a Mizzou flop, and the announcers got quiet and one guy eventually asked the other guy in a mumble whether he thought it was a good call. The other guy made him clarify and then defended the refs with the “freshman inexperience” line. That was also the guy talking about Brown getting T’d up a second time for talking when there was no taunting visible on the camera.

I have a feeling there were a lot of make up calls in this game.

by sax solo on Jan 26, 2012 1:56 PM CST up reply actions

All contact doesn't have to be a foul.

If the first block/charge call had no impact on the play, it’s possible that it could be a no-call. That doesn’t happen very often but it’s a common complaint about the contact.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
Rock Chalk Talk

by Warden11 on Jan 26, 2012 2:05 PM CST up reply actions

This case looks pretty cut and dried though.

Getting in the way of guys who are dunking is kind of dangerous and it’s something I think refs would always call one way or the other. I really can’t think of another no-call I’ve seen with this much contact right up front.

I think if this happened almost any time but the very first play of the game, it would get called every time.

by sax solo on Jan 26, 2012 3:07 PM CST up reply actions

I know it has to be called as the current rules stand

but I’d like to see a “play-on” rule when the defense gets a steal and has a clear path for a fast break. Its so frustrating having a potential highlight and/or momentum changing play called back because there was a minor foul. Or even better, let the team that stole the ball finish and then call the foul.

by jhwk316 on Jan 26, 2012 2:48 PM CST reply actions

nice

was just thinking about this the other night, similar to soccer when a ref “plays the advantage” and let’s a potential scoring play continue. Not sure it could work with basketball but thought about it too.

by I need more Esteban on Jan 26, 2012 4:39 PM CST up reply actions

Soccer needs rules like that

because scoring is so rare.

Excitement Scoring opportunities are like a precious flower in soccer and the rules have to work hard to let them happen.

by sax solo on Jan 26, 2012 6:10 PM CST up reply actions

my biggest complaint about the sport is not the lack of scoring

but the lack of scoring opportunities.

The name of that song played at KC Comets games in the '80's was Giorgio Moroder's "The Chase." Now you know.

by labbadabba on Jan 27, 2012 8:33 AM CST up reply actions

strongly disagree

if you are referring to shots on goal only then maybe so. But scoring opportunities are very frequent in most games. Every dangerous ball into the box is a scoring opportunity. Every through ball played in is an opportunity. The fact that there isn’t a plethora of scoring makes every one of those exciting if you have a rooting interest.

by I need more Esteban on Jan 27, 2012 11:16 AM CST up reply actions

I'm not necessarliy saying shots on goal,

just like in hockey a scoring opportunity may not involve a shot on goal. But watching guys slowly inch up the field just to kick a ball at a goal the size of a double-wide and miss just isn’t all that exciting to me. FWIW, I’m not totally hating on soccer. I’m gradually coming around but there are definitely some things about the game that I still and probably will never like.

Indoor soccer on the other hand, I can get behind that.

The name of that song played at KC Comets games in the '80's was Giorgio Moroder's "The Chase." Now you know.

by labbadabba on Jan 27, 2012 11:34 AM CST up reply actions

and you have every right to not be a fan of it

if you don’t enjoy it, just like anyone has with any other sport.

I get more defensive when people try to talk about it not being exciting because there isn’t a lot of scoring. If people would take time to learn the nuances of the game they would realize that excitement comes because there are so few scoring and every scoring opportunity counts that much more.

Also, I’m probably bringing up some things that you never even alluded to so I apologize for that because what you said in your last post makes perfect sense, it’s just the argument I hear from a lot of people in the US on “why soccer sucks” yet they don’t understand the game.

by I need more Esteban on Jan 27, 2012 5:51 PM CST up reply actions

I like soccer, I just think the rules need to work hard

because scoring opportunities are so important.

In basketball it’s fairly easy to foul a guy to stop an easy bucket on the fast break or whatever. In soccer you can get ejected from the game (and no replacement—immense penalty) and/or give up a penalty kick if you try to stop someone who has a scoring opportunity and you don’t do it just right.

Though that said, I’m sure the refs in basketball are conscious about not letting flow of play get too choppy and they definitely get fuzzy about things. I’m definitely not trying to say that basketball is perfect and soccer sucks.

That said, there’s still some part of me that looks upon a 0-0 final with horror and disgust.
