Looks like we're after one more QB. The nice thing about this guy is he has four years to play three. Not your typical JUCO. That means he could redshirt next year or play if needed. And then compete with Heaps or take over for Heaps when he graduates.

Not trying to defend Duke
But how does their policy differ from that of KU? Student tickets that aren’t picked up are resold to the public as GA seats. It’s a quality move on the part of the schools – you get twice the revenue for each ticket sold.
Cameron is tiny
around 9k capacity. The policy may be similar but the scale is different.
Yeah, exactly.
I go to a similar school (though not undergrad), and it takes a ridiculous percentage of the “interested” people to show up to fill up the student section.
Are the student tickets only for undergrads?
If I remember right, Duke has more grad students than undergrads. It’s total enrollment is not far below a smaller state school like KU.
You don't have time to go to basketball games in grad school
I mean you do, but you really don’t.

Here are the numbers according to Wikipedia
KU: 20k undergrad, 9k grad (if you include the med school). 29k total.
Duke: 6.5k undergrad, 8.2k grad, ~15K total.
29/4 = 7.15
15/1.5 = 10
So KU needs 1 in ~7 students to show up to fill Allen, and Duke needs 1 in 10, if we’re including grad students. From that standpoint, Duke actually has an advantage.
In my experience, though, students are a whole lot more interested in school sports during their undergrad years. I make it to an occasional Vandy game, but I literally don’t know anyone at the law school besides me that goes. And most of the time, I just don’t have time to go.
Using undergrad numbes:
20/4 = 5
6.5/1.5 = 4.33
There, we have a slight advantage. From a socioeconomic standpoint, Duke students are also less likely to be interested in sports, as FJLhawk was saying. I don’t know how to compute that though. I’m not saying that makes Cameron any better or worse of an environment. I’m just saying Duke is going to have a tougher time filling up their gym.
Duke also has a higher percentage of out of state and international students
The average student is less likely to have a connection to the program prior to setting foot on campus. If I remember correctly, their top three state for undergrad are California, New York and then North Carolina.
I subscribe to ESPN the magazine and remembered an article...
after reading this which discussed the 10 loudest college basketball arenas (KU came in #1) and remembered the article referencing percentage of students. This is what I found about Duke (#2 loudest) and KU:
Duke: 9,000 seats, 1,500 students (16.1%)
Kansas: 16,300 seats, 4,000 students (24.5%)
Their atmosphere is hurt pretty bad by having only 600-800 of the 1,200 showing up to sit in the courtside seating. It strikes me as funny that my take from the articles and comments is that they have 300 extra seats somewhere else that they give to students who don’t camp out. Why would they not give the close seats to those students before selling them? At least if we had 1,000 students skip on picking up there tickets the 3,000 left would still be as close to the court as possible.
Cundiff
I saw that and thought it was great. I’m always entertained by the creativity of that particular group of students…

Boren pretty much confirmed Louisville
5 or 6 months ago. I don’t think he was just making it up. From a basketball standpoint that would more than replace our rivalry with the slavers.
I don't want anyone in our conference who plays their basketball in the KFC "YUM" Center and their football in the "Papa John's Cardinal Football" stadium.

I saw Rush play in the Yum! Center
Nice enough place. But it’s so sterile and lifeless. I imagine games there must feel like pro games, rather than college.
LOL
I definitely did a double take the first time I heard that. Doesn’t the school have ANY input on what their paid sponsors put on the building. The KFC center, okay I get that, the KFC YUM center?? That’s just embarrassing….

Yeah, it looks absurd when you drive by and see the logo.
You probably know this, but it’s a little less absurd when you consider that Yum! is a corporation that owns Taco Bell, KFC, and Kansas’ own Pizza Hut. I can imagine the talks:
Yum: We want to be the named sponsor of your building. Have some money.
Louisville: Money? Awesome. What name do you want?
Yum: Oh, I don’t know. How about our company’s name, Yum!
Louisville: Oh…that’s a uh…that’s a great name…

Is it cowardly
that the Big XII doesn’t want 12 teams so as to avoid the need for a conference championship game?
I think that’s pretty weak sauce right there…
The name of that song played at KC Comets games in the '80's was Giorgio Moroder's "The Chase." Now you know.
I don't read the report that way.
It doesn’t say that. It says the conference is interested in expanding, just not adding a conference championship game. Personally I like that. What’s the primary reason for having a conference championship? Money. What’s rapidly destroying college athletics? Money.
That fact the Presidents feel no pressure (read financial) to add a conference championship game is refreshing.
"No time for questions. No time for games. Start kickin' ass and takin' down the names." - Dave Mustaine.
According to Tait's article
The schools aren’t opposed to having 12 teams, but are opposed to having a conference championship game. From a competitive standpoint, makes no sense for the Big XII to have a championship game, since all it serves is to add an extra game that could knock a team out of the NC (as has happened at least twice). The only league that it doesn’t matter to is the SEC, since they are pretty much assured of having one team in the NC every year no matter what, given how everyone views the conference.

How does scheduling work then?
One of the benefits of the championship game was that you knew that, even in the oddest year, the teams with the best records from each division would play each other.
The only way it works is going to the Big 10 model of staggered scheduling, with a few guaranteed games (i.e. Texas-Oklahoma, Texas-TCU, OU-OSU, KU-KSU). Just not very excited to see that.

the best laid plans...
This year though, it would have benefited OSU to play another quality opponent, potentially pushing the computers (and maybe even voters) in their favor.

The fighting mormons vs the fighting baptists would be interesting
Why not add Notre Dame for maximum religious warfare
Have the awful new unis been discussed?
Thankfully, they’re for other teams, but they’re pretty bad.
I think this line sums it up well: “They’re not playing for Syracuse or UNC or Arizona anymore. They’re playing for Nike.”
Insanity is just a state of mind.
Ugh
I don’t care about the recruiting disadvantage. I wish we were sticking with Adidas
We're going Nike?
I didn’t know that was a done deal, nor that the Adidas deal was up for renewal already.
Blech.
I think 2013 it's up for renewal
but I honestly haven’t seen anything one way or another, just a lot of smoke that it’s Nike.
If they try to force this garbage on us I hope there’s some sort of way the boss can say no.

Yeah, I have no confirmation.
I just assumed it was true. Probably wrong.
Unless Nike has significantly changed their sponsorship policy, I would be shocked if we switched
The Adidas contract was one of Lew’s best accomplishments at KU, IMO. We went from a tiny contract with Nike that only really supported men’s basketball to a mega deal that not only supported the entire athletic department, but also reached out to offer steep discounts to club sports and the general student body, as well.
If we’re going to switch back, it should only happen if Nike agrees to sponsor the entire AD, as well as offers price control guarantees on general merch. No one should have to pay $30 for a t-shirt that just says, “Kansas Basketball” because it has a swoosh on it.
And no gray jerseys. They look awful.

I know they're not Nike
but I feel the same way about KSU grey unis. They’re just ugly, not to mention it is hard to read whatever is sewn onto the jersey.

Off topic, but I forgot to mention this yesterday...
did anyone notice the noticeable absence of the Whoo at the end of the game on Monday? It could still be heard, but it sounded like it was coming from a smaller group of people. Probably the same jacklegs who yelled CHIEFS at the end of the anthem.
clearly someone didn't read the A&M recap
tsk tsk. haha
yeah it was just a small group of people. Smaller than the number who yelled chiefs. It’s the morons who sit behind the basket on the KU bench side

I'm really surprised to hear that Vegas says AFH is only worth 5.5 points
I think the Division I average for home court advantage is 3.5 points. I would have though AFH would have been worth more than that.
It does further put the lie to all of those K-State and MU fans who claim that KU gets some sort of huge officiating advantage at home.
On the RockMNation gameday thread tonight, they were bitterly complaining about the refs, as usual
And they have lots of theories (they seem to think Big 12 refs are worse than other conferences’ — I have no idea why), but the most prominent is that home court makes a huge difference in the officiating.
However, if the biggest home court advantage in the conference (and maybe the country) is only 5.5 points, how big of a difference could the officiating possibly be making. I’m sure that the crowd is contributing to a home court advantage in other ways (makes it more difficult for visitor to communicate, to shoot free throws, to keep their belief, etc) so the refs are only a fraction of 5.5 points. Even if the officiating is consistently in favor of the home court, how big a difference could it be making? 2 points?
Something to keep in mind when you read MU fans saying that KU only beat K-State (or any number of other relative blowouts) because of the refs.
I get what you're saying,
but I’m having a hard time reconciling it with the fact that Missouri fans are never wrong about anything.
You make a good point.
Think how much more money Vegas casinos could make if they had Mizzou fans setting the lines.
OSU up by 4 on MU with 2:52 to go.
Le’Bryan Nash with a huge game so far.
Thank you Oklahoma State!
I didn’t watch any of the game (Modern Family was on), but your comment made me check ESPN to see what the score was.
What? A girl who likes sports...INCONCEIVABLE!
MU losing certainly changes things in the Big 12.
Makes me breathe a little easier, that’s for sure.
for now it does...
just have to avoid the slip up.

Yep. I'm still worried about this weekend after seeing us play Monday night.
Just nice to have that two game cushion.
Been firing off MU hazes via text to all my MU buddies.
The pleasure I felt when I watched them lose is the definition of a true rival. I’m going to hate to lose that feeling when they move on to the SEC. It just won’t be the same.
i have already lost it
didn’t even really celebrate it. Yeah I hate them but I mostly see them as irrelevant. Oh well.

them winning games...
Is why I somewhat celebrated their loss tonight. It had nothing to do with it being Mizzou. It was the fact that was the team that was in second behind us.
