Joe Paterno Dies

Joe Paterno, ex-Penn State Nittany Lions coach, dies at 85 after 2-month cancer fight - ESPN
Joe Paterno has died at the age of 85 after experiencing serious complications from lung-cancer treatment. Sad how quickly this whole thing went downhill from the allegations to his death.

Kansas survives scare from Texas 69-66 - KansasCity.com
If Kansas wins the Big 12, the Jayhawks may look back on its 69-66 victory over Texas as a defining moment. Trailing by four with three minutes to play, the Jayhawks made enough big plays down the stretch pull out a victory in a building that hasn't been kind to them over the years.

Interesting, wonder how that conversation went.

Mango to SJ: "So, you guys did awesome with your 'nice' coach"

Biggest surprise to me yesterday...

Was how bad Baylor looked. They are so soft – PJ3, in particular. I expected to be extremely impressed of Missouri won there, but didn’t feel that way after watching the game. It’s still a great win for them, but when it was over, I really just felt like we should have beaten them even worse.

by hiphopopotamus on Jan 22, 2012 9:40 AM CST via mobile reply actions

Yep

PJ3 looked like his confidence was still a mess from his date with TRob. And, not to take anything from Missouri, but how can drew not run the offense through the inside with the advantage they had. Settled for tough jumpers against a very solid D and never even seemed to want to go after Missouri’s huge weakness. One more mark in the Scott Drew is a terrible coach column.

by bigreed on Jan 22, 2012 11:34 AM CST up reply actions

Drew is awful...

Anyone that argues differently doesn’t know a whole lot about basketball.

by hiphopopotamus on Jan 22, 2012 1:15 PM CST up reply actions

I'm not going to argue right or wrong here...

but I am curious to see what transpires now. I mean it’s almost like this whole thing basically killed the man and many have claimed that his legacy is damaged.

That said, we are a very forgiving society and we like the comeback story in the US. Due to his age and health, Paterno never had that chance. So now that this is all very fresh, does that forgiveness come more quickly due to his death? And then isn’t that a little sad that a man was torn down and died under the belief that his life’s work was all for not?

Again, I think he’s professed that he should have done more and I don’t want to argue right or wrong. I just think the whole situation is a sad one for a host of reasons.

You summed it up clearly here.

as far as his football legacy is concerned

I think he’ll be fine in the long run. In terms of his legacy as a man, I don’t know that living even another 10 years would have turned that around.

and to be honest

I feel like Paterno already let the world know which one was his higher priority.

I'm think the clouds will go away in a couple years

barring some kind of huge admission about him taking part in the coverups.

by sax solo on Jan 22, 2012 3:03 PM CST up reply actions

I agree

Especially since he admitted he made a mistake. Still, his legacy will always be fairly tarnished, but time will slowly decrease that amount.

"his life’s work was all for not?"

Does it need to be an either or?

To say his life’s work was all for not is to dismiss all the positive impact he had on the hundreds of players and others he came in contact with. It is a shame that the yang is such an abandonment of the inocent.

As Fetch says, I hope I’m not remembered for the bad things I have done. I also hope that I am never confronted with defending someone that is being attacked (why can’t we all just treat each other with more reasonably?), but even more hope that I will have the courage and/or whatever to do something about it if I am.

(Grammar nazi-ing aside, I agree with you. I think JoePa did the wrong thing, and I didn’t think he should have kept his job, but that’s not the same as morally condemning him. All of us are weak in some way or another. In his place I don’t know if I would have had the strength to see and do the right thing either. I hope I would, but I can’t say I’ve ever been tested like that.)

by sax solo on Jan 23, 2012 1:25 AM CST up reply actions

Strength?

You make it sound like Paterno doing the right thing would have been some epic feat of strength or battle. No way. Joe Paterno was the most powerful man in that entire town, maybe entire state. He could have very easily did the right thing. Easily. But to do so would have disrupted the nice kingdom he had built for himself. So he didn’t.

It appears to me he put himself and his football program ahead of the kids. To me, that’s his legacy.

It also isn't the first time he had covered something up for the benefit of the team and players

Its just in the past, it was minor stuff. He was a great man and coach, but it was well known in Big 10 country that he used his power and influence to cover stuff up. Football and the team was first and foremost.

What you say is true. But it's also easy to say.

People should be careful about being backseat moralists when haven’t walked a mile in similar shoes. All I’m sayin’.

Well
Mango: “I’d rather win 12 games and treat you like dirt than lose 10, but it’s whatever”

By the time Mangino was shit-canned, the team was a pretty long ways removed from 12 wins. Not long as in time, but long as in ability and actual wins. Those were an ugly 7 straight losses to end the Mangino era.

They must not like Aerosmith

I’m not a big fan either, but his rendition sounded exactly as you would expect the lead singer of Aerosmith to sound.

If you listen to Aerosmith's older stuff

Tyler can absolutely wail (in a good way). Guy is old and did way too many drugs. In his prime though, he was one of the best rock singers in history.

by Andrew Clark on Jan 23, 2012 11:10 AM CST up reply actions

I'm somewhere in-between.

I can appreciate a good Aerosmith song, but wouldn’t call him one of the best singers in rock history. Then again, I think Geddy Lee sounds great, so my opinion is probably void.

I didn’t think Tyler sounded good at all yesterday though. Not sure if it was the fact that he was singing a cappella, his age, or what, but I don’t think the American Idol judges would have passed him onto Hollywood for that performance.

Elijah Johnson deserves lot of ‘D’ credit - Thoughts?

I agree. It is nice that TRel is getting credit as the “best”, but EJ (& Withey) need to get the rec for providing the D.

I've been ecstatic with all of the starter's performance on defense this season

After that though… Young has struggled, Wesley is way too foul prone and Teahan is Teahan.

by Andrew Clark on Jan 22, 2012 10:10 PM CST up reply actions

Don't you think Young is at least improving?

He has only been with the staff for a few months now. He does seem really intent on learning, which is a great place to start. Unfortunately, Conner & Justin don’t have that to fall back on. WYSIWYG.

by dagger108 on Jan 22, 2012 10:13 PM CST up reply actions

Young has gotten better, but he can still be a big liability at times

But like you said, the longer he is with the team and has Self and co coaching him, the better he’ll be.

by Andrew Clark on Jan 22, 2012 11:18 PM CST up reply actions

At times he shows improvement.

I’ve been one of the biggest Young cheerleaders around but he does get abused anytime he’s on the court. The opponents go right at him and it’s often successful. His team defense appears to have improved, his man on man defense is still bad.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

Our bench is just bad...

and somehow getting worse. I guess we’re spoiled to almost always have 8+ guys that would start for most teams, but this year is a stark exception. I’m used to them by now, so I’m technically more “comfortable,” but it’s crazy how little they’re giving us from game to game. On Saturday, our entire bench combined for 5 points, 3 boards and 6 fouls (in 35 minutes).

by hiphopopotamus on Jan 23, 2012 8:40 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah... this season is a far cry from 2008

When we brought in Sherron Collins and Sasha Kaun as our first two off the bench. And had other contributors like Roderick Stewart, young Cole, etc.

Bench was thin in 1988 too

Clint Normore came in from the football team and became a legend.

by jayhawk1996 on Jan 23, 2012 11:17 AM CST up reply actions

If there ever was a team to go on a 1988 type run, its this year's team...

Might be a little under the radar. Although right now, all signs point to KU getting to the tournament as a two seed with “Kansas” stitched on the jerseys…

The '88 comparisons end at depth

This team isn’t gonna start the tournament as a 6 seed with double-digit losses
