It's Friday, What Are You Listening To?

It's been awhile since we've done this and I'm in a musical mood at the moment. Heading downtown in Denver tonight to catch and old string band that won the Telluride Bluegrass band contest a year ago called Pert Near Sandstone. Not really sure what to expect but I do like the style so it should be good.

That said, I'm looking for some other styles, genre's, bands and songs. I've been learning to play a little bluegrass guitar for about a year now and I've been a bit immersed in the aforementioned style so I'm always curious to hear what else is hot and going on out there. Skip the Party Rock Anthem though, I don't care if you live under a rock that song is still being played.

So have at it. What are you listening to?

After a quick sample of all...

I’ve decided to further explore The Walkmen.

Pulled me in pretty quickly. Of course Radiohead is always a good option.

The Walkmen are great

Bows and Arrows is probably their fastest album – the other albums are good musically, but are more slow and brooding. If you like their stuff, and ever have a chance to see them live, you have to go – they put on an amazing live show.

Same here.

Soren Petro on 810 in KC is about the only sports talk guy i can stand anymore. The 10-2 time is not the most convenient if you have a normal job however.

The usual old man boring stuff.

Springsteen, especially the Darkness on the Edge of Town & Born to Run albums, Neil Young, Led Zeppelin(first four albums) The Replacements(my favorite deranged alcoholic band). Warren Zevon’s first few albums were great. Lucinda Williams, Rosanne Cash, Shelby Lynne, and AniDifranco on the female side.

There just good sing along bar songs

Fun to play. The stuff I personally write is the dirtiest blues-rock stuff you could dig.

And I don’t mind beer bottles being thrown at me, if they are full and unopened. And by throw you really mean lightly rolled towards.

by Andrew Clark on Jan 20, 2012 1:12 PM CST up reply actions

That's a good question...

I grew up listening to a lot of 90s alt stuff, bands like the Chili Peppers, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Jane’s Addiction, Foo Fighters, etc. So when I started righting songs, they were more based on that.

However, the more I got into guitar, I really started getting into more blues-based stuff, some of 60’s and 70’s stuff like Hendrix, Zeppelin, Clapton, etc. It was fun to play.

So now, its kind of a mix between the two. Like to play the dirty, old school blues rock stuff, but there is that 90’s mix as well. This is getting way too complicated… :)

If you really want to get back to basics

you should listen to the Yardbirds. They had Clapton then Jimmy Page as guitarists and were immensely influential. Though Page stole a bunch of their best stuff and put it into Led Zep’s first couple of albums, so you’re probably getting a lot of their vibe through that.

by hunter s. royal on Jan 20, 2012 2:41 PM CST up reply actions

I can totally relate to this stuff

I love the 90’s rock sound. That is probably my favorite era of music. If you ever upload any of your stuff on youtube or something let me know, i’d check it out

Starting kids in school is always funny/scary.

My son started school in 92 and he wound up good friends with a lot of the kids for years, and my ex-wife and i had lots of social interactions with some of the parents. Six years later my daughter started and it seemed like 2/3rds of the kids were wearing wresting t-shirts to school 5 days a week. Not so much on the social interaction.

Of course everyone's listening to The Black Keys, but check out the whole album

and their old stuff – it’s pretty solid through and through.

My pet band from the last six months or so has been The Gossip. I dig female rock vocals, and this chick can belt it out with some catchy and/or poppy grooves – reminding me of a harder version of Stevie Nix and Fleetwood Mac. They have a large hipster NY following, which is an unfortunate minus. My faves include “Standing In The Way Of Control” and “Yr Mangled Heart”.

This was also one of the better “top albums” reviews for 2011.
http://weepingelvis.hypervocal.com/the-top-30-albums-of-2011/
From that list, I’d vouch for Elbow, The Civil Wars (at least the Barton Hollow single), Girls, Lykke Li (to an extent), and Bon Iver.
A few of the reviews get into the stupid, meaningless reviewer crap like the example below, but by-and-large it has well-written coverage of indie-ish stuff from 2011.

(I’m striking this out b/c it doesn’t deserve to even be considered as non-strike-out-able) “Her lyrics and music connect seamlessly and symbolically to expose her longing for purity and a desire to think the best of others while at the same time feeling a magnetic connection to her debasement.”

I like them too, but don't understand the obsession

To me, every song sounds similar (hey lets make some riffs based on the blues scale!). And the media love they got and all the attention made me get sick of them. It wasn’t Kings of Leon bad (a band I never liked) but it was in the ballpark. Classic example of a kind of underground band that blew up, had a schtick (old school blues riffing, ONLY TWO GUYS!) and then got kind of annoying. At least that is how I feel. I still like a lot of their stuff though.

Im still pissed at myself for falling so hard for the Only by the Night album...

I didn’t like their older stuff… And despite everything on that album sounding the same I just kept listening to it… Because of that got excited for their new album and BAM! Disappointment. Why did I get disappointed, when all the tell tale signs would say I wouldn’t like it.

I haven’t listened to it much. I liked In Rainbows A LOT, like a lot a lot. The new one(king of limbs) is kinda iffy for me, at least after just a listen or two.

A lot of it is hit or miss for me

I thought Kid A was pretty good. In Rainbows I really like, probably because they went back to a little bit more of a guitar-driven sound than the electric sound. The rest, like I said, hit or miss. Some songs like “Go To Sleep” or “There There” I really like, others I don’t care for.

90’s Radiohead was the best though. OK Computer is awesome, and The Bends is really good as well.

There is a band out of Stillwater called Other Lives that is worth checking out. They will be at the Jackpot in Lawrence in Feb. I believe they are also opening for Radiohead at the Sprint Center in March.
Really like The Band of Skulls right now. The song Sweet Sour is stuck in my head at the moment.
Middle Class Rut is good. New Low is probably my favorite song of theirs so far.
Grouplove is also worth a listen. Start with Colours and you will not be disappointed.
Hypemachine is one of my favorite music websites to browse. In addition to new music, there are some incredible remixes.

The funny thing about Mumford...

is they have been a bit of a gateway for a lot of people to bluegrass but they maybe wouldn’t even be considered bluegrass in a lot of ways. That said, I think it’s sort of the direction they are expanding.

I went to Telluride for the Bluegrass festival last year and they were really the buzz that kicked that thing up a gear. But then I went to their ‘Nightgrass’ show which was in the Sheridan Opera House and it was really an incredibly candid look at them as a band because it was such a small venue (200 people tops).

They had Bela Fleck, Abigail Washburn, Chris Thile and Jerry Douglas join the on stage at various points throughout the night and it was very conversational, audience interaction and the whole deal. Multiple times they referenced the fact that they feel incredibly out of place because musically they’ve been shot into the bluegrass world with these phenomenal musicians when they haven’t been playing all that long.

At one point they commented on being nervous about their tuning with Jerry Douglas and Bela Fleck sitting in the audience. Then they bashed Vegas, some guy threw a joint on stage and all in all it was an incredible night.

In short, they write a great song. Warden’s point about the second album being tricky is right on point. They introduced quite a few of their new songs during the show and they are expanding their musical chops so I think that’s commendable that they realize where they are and what they want to do. It’s just interesting because their career pretty much shot out of a cannon and priorities could become tricky this next go around.

Not sure if that makes sense at all, but I just found these guys refreshingly humble in that setting and I’m really curious to see what direction they end up going in the future.

Plus that tends to be a pretty cheap ticket because bluegrass, while growing, isn’t exactly mainstream.

Wish I would of checked this last night...

Some good American country music. Not all country boys like purple. I actually know quite a few of us that bleed crimson and blue. Not me (cause I’m a country boy not a cowboy) but if you saw some of them, you’d swear they were KState fans. They aren’t white trash hillbillies like Missouri fans, but they fit in great with KState and OK State fans. But my type of country is red dirt and the party rock country. None of that my dog died, my wife is cheating on me, or I wrecked my truck type country.

Me too...

Yesterday started out with Spoon’s Kill The Moonlight and then moved onto Tom Waits’ second album, The Heart of Saturday Night.

By the time I left the office it was Black Rebel Motorcycle Club’s first album, BRMC, and I threw on Blitzen Trapper’s new one, American Goldwing, while doing the dishes after dinner.

I love Kill the moonlight. Spoon has some good stuff.

Tom Waits stuff is hit or miss for me, like a lot, other stuff I’m iffy on. Nice thing is the guy has a crazy stocked discography…

I'm a huge early Waits fan

The later stuff (pretty much after Bone Machine in 1992) is just weird and, frankly, atonal.

The Heart of Saturday Night helped me stay relaxed as Comcast took 5 hours to set up phone and internet in my office (after taking 3 weeks to port my number).

I think I'm in the wrong place as well

but just to throw some things out there that haven’t been touch on at all:

Avicii – Levels
Avicii – Seek Bromance
Avicii – Penguin
Fedde Le Grand – Paradise
Fedde Le Grand – So Much Love
Tyga – Make It Nasty
Afrojack – Lionheart

By no means is this all I listen to, but nothing even close to these guys has been mentioned.

by SweedishHamma on Jan 22, 2012 2:43 AM CST reply actions

Well, last Friday I listened to...

Running Wild (German power metal band not to be confused with Runnin’ Wild)
Cauldron (Canadian NWOBHM-sounding trio)
Scorpions

and then when I got home and was working on my taxes……Lada Gaga. Yeah, I’ll turn in my man-card now, but I like me some dance music on occasion. Never quite understood why. It definitely conflicts with my metal roots. But I just go with it…….

Anyone...

ever seen or listened to the Jayhawks at length? They are coming to Denver on Friday and I feel a bizarre obligation to go see them but I know nothing about them.

Not quite "at length", but I've always been a little "meh" on them

Maybe my expectations were too high, considering the band’s name. Hopefully others can chime in with better info.

I prefer “Kansas” if we want a band named after our stompin ground.

The thing about Lady Gaga...

Is that even if you don’t like her music you can’t really deny the talent. She is incredible at what she does, and her shit is catchy as hell.

I get the appeal, and as far as popular music goes there are worse things.

She probably made the best straight up pop songs of the 00's so far

She needs to stop with these ridiculous publicity stunts though. She’s really talented and doesn’t need to wear a meat dress to get attention.

Thanks!

If it makes you feel better…..I pulled out my ‘96 Les Paul Classic and my Ibanez RG 560 (for some whammy bar fun) and jammed some old Leppard, Priest, and Maiden today. Then I stole my kid’s B.C. Rich Avenger and got really evil with D-tuned speed metal riffs. Then I realized that after not playing for year…..I suck.

My house got broke into, and I got cleaned out...

So I took the money I got for my piece of shit Mexican strat, and the 350 CD’s I was reimbursed and dropped it all on a new guitar.

I replaced the pickups too in the strat

Fender Noiseless pickups. So crisp.

The guitar needs a little service on it though since its been used very heavily for ten years. I need to take it into someone.

One more I have to throw out there

If any of you have seen The League (if you haven’t, watch it on netflix instant, very funny show) Taco is an actual musician. His real name is Jon Lajoie and he makes hilarious songs. very off color so be forewarned. Here is his take on pop music
