Kansas Jayhawks vs. Iowa State Cyclones Open Game Thread

Welcome to Rock Chalk Talk and your open game thread for the Kansas Jayhawks vs the Iowa State Cyclones. Fred Hoiberg has Iowa State moving in the right direction. This one is at home so you would expect Kansas to play well and get the win, but they can't get caught looking ahead to Baylor on Monday or this one could easily end up becoming a bit of a tricky matchup. For some reason Iowa State just tends to have that sort of game against Kansas from time to time and it makes me just a bit nervous.

OU up 10 with just under 14 left.

Another example of how competitive the league is this year. I think “tough” is overselling the quality a bit, so I’m going to start using “competitive”

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

They called THAT over the back!

KState in trouble

But has a window to get back in it. They’ll need a few more shots, down 10 by 4.

it’ll still be tough.

K-State does not look like a well-coached team to me

down 8 with two minutes left…they take 18 seconds off the shot clock then turn it over

I am just playing man.

I am a KState fan, but I am not sure about the Teahan experiment.

by Disco Time on Jan 14, 2012 3:25 PM CST up reply actions

Aside from when we beat you

I have not seen Teahan hit one three under pressure. He just gets so goddamn nervous I think

by Walshdollar on Jan 14, 2012 3:26 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly.

I remember him hitting those couple threes against us, and thinking he will never have a game like this the rest of the season.

by Disco Time on Jan 14, 2012 3:27 PM CST up reply actions

0 fer 4 today

I would be okay with him out there if he could play defense but he’s also by far our slowest player… just not a huge Teahan fan

by Walshdollar on Jan 14, 2012 3:29 PM CST up reply actions

Tyrel wasn't a good defender

but he hit so many big shots. He had Sherron Collins, Brady Morningstar, Xavier Henry, etc. on the team and he was still the one counted on for the big shot.

Self talks about how Conner’s the best pure shooter he’s ever seen but it doesn’t translate into games

by Walshdollar on Jan 14, 2012 3:34 PM CST up reply actions

He wasn't a great defender, but at least smart.

He did not have the speed to keep up with guys, but Teahan gets out of position all the time.

by Disco Time on Jan 14, 2012 3:35 PM CST up reply actions

I wouldn't call him that

I wouldn’t consider Tyshawn or Elijah above average defenders and I still think they are better than Tyrel was

by Walshdollar on Jan 14, 2012 3:38 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

He was prone to backdoor cuts

But other than that I’d say he was above average

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 14, 2012 3:42 PM CST up reply actions

He was just a tad slower than most players

I think he got bailed out quite a bit by Cole so it masked some of his deficiencies but I just recall him getting beat off the dribble a lot more than everyone else. He’s certainly better than Teahan

by Walshdollar on Jan 14, 2012 3:42 PM CST up reply actions

he was a tad whiter

but actually one of the fastest players on last year’s team

Use the forks

by PenHawk on Jan 14, 2012 3:43 PM CST up reply actions

He could run sprints fast, yes

but he didn’t have the side to side movement that our other defenders have. I guess I shouldn’t have used the word fast, I should have said he didn’t have the length to stay in front of people

by Walshdollar on Jan 14, 2012 3:44 PM CST up reply actions

He was definitely faster than Teahan

And he played more, so he had a lot more experience with how to make up for his weaknesses

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 14, 2012 3:39 PM CST up reply actions

Does anyone else

feel like Jeff Withey doesn’t understand defense?

Use the forks

by PenHawk on Jan 14, 2012 3:25 PM CST reply actions

Not really

Since he leads the conference in blocks. He’s just slow.

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 14, 2012 3:26 PM CST up reply actions

shot blocking is a separate talent from overall defense

he’s on by far the best player on ISU’s team, and he abandons him to try and defend a drive from a guard. He just seems to get lost at times

but Holthus is driving me nuts with his diarrhea mouth. Seems to think he’s paid by the word.

It was quick, but he was pretty open off of the action they got

forgotten everything he’s learned about double teams

by Walshdollar on Jan 14, 2012 3:47 PM CST reply actions

I'd always like to see Tyshawn drive the ball

if he’s ever that wide open for three. There was no one in that lane

by Walshdollar on Jan 14, 2012 3:50 PM CST up reply actions

Really?

When he released there was one guy standing between him and the basket, a help defender in the center of the lane, and a guard coming back from midcourt. He would have been swarmed if he’d taken it in.

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 14, 2012 3:53 PM CST up reply actions

Oh

I thought there was just the one defender between him and the basket and I’ll take that all day. Still think there’s a pretty good chance he could have drawn the foul anyway

by Walshdollar on Jan 14, 2012 3:55 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah and if he does drive and attract attention

It would still open someone up for the kick. Still, I think the two best times to shoot that three are in transition and off an offensive rebound, so I liked the shot. Its too bad it didn’t go in, the roof was about to go off AFH.

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 14, 2012 4:00 PM CST up reply actions

Damn. ISU gives us a break

by shooting so quick, then EJ kicks it outside instead of just taking it to the basket.

by hunter s. royal on Jan 14, 2012 3:50 PM CST reply actions

It wasn't a bad play

We had guys in to rebound, if the shot hadn’t been short. And Ty was wiiiiiide open.
ISU bailed us out when Royce was out, we have to get the 3rd foul on him quick to start this 2nd half.

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 14, 2012 3:52 PM CST up reply actions

so mad right now

were shooting so bad right now

by dester30 on Jan 14, 2012 3:56 PM CST reply actions

If it was just bad shooting, I wouldn't feel so bad.

They are out rebounding us. ISU is out rebounding us in AFH with White on the bench! We are not playing nearly hard enough.

by Marty_ on Jan 14, 2012 3:59 PM CST up reply actions

Over halftime

we just have to regroup, make the defensive adjustments, and stop with the damn hesitations on offense. When anyone but T-Rob has the ball they look like they’re the basketball equivalent of the kid that’s stuttering in Billy Madison. I just want to scream T-T-T-T-Take the shot, drive, or make the pass junior! I think it has a lot to do with people being stagnant instead of in motion and on top of that being out of position.

by rockchalk1187 on Jan 14, 2012 3:59 PM CST reply actions

Good points.

ISU is definitely looking more aggressive than we are, and there should be no excuse for that at home.

by hunter s. royal on Jan 14, 2012 4:01 PM CST up reply actions

I imagine we will shoot better in the second half

And I know Self will rip into them about the rebounding. As long as ISU doesn’t go 7-13 from 3 in the second half as well, we should be fine.

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 14, 2012 4:02 PM CST up reply actions

In other news, the New Orleans Saints

Just performed a vintage 2009-2011 KU Jayhawks defensive stand.

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 14, 2012 4:04 PM CST reply actions

Pretty much

49-yard pass for a touchdown where the safety came in for the tackle and hit the cornerback more than the receiver, essentially blocking him out of the play

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 14, 2012 4:07 PM CST up reply actions

Our FT-shooting

Has been horrendous. Someone I didn’t add it up until now, but we are doing terrible this game.

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 14, 2012 4:11 PM CST up reply actions

We can't make lay-ups, free throws or put-backs

Let see how Bill Self figures a way out of this one

by Loose Seal on Jan 14, 2012 4:17 PM CST reply actions

Hitting the boards much better so far this half,

but you’re right about the fumble fingers really costing us.

by hunter s. royal on Jan 14, 2012 4:19 PM CST up reply actions

They are gonna keep shooting those 3's.

And they are gonna make some too eventually, really need to close some ground or we could be trouble.

by Marty_ on Jan 14, 2012 4:18 PM CST reply actions

And a great job by T-Rob

taking the board away from 3 ISU players and leading to a basket by T2.

by hunter s. royal on Jan 14, 2012 4:22 PM CST up reply actions

Does Self ever go full-court press?

I think that might work with our guards against theirs.

by Loose Seal on Jan 14, 2012 4:22 PM CST reply actions

Good drive by T2.

Chance for the old school 3 point play. We also seem to be drawing a ton of fouls on ISU.

by hunter s. royal on Jan 14, 2012 4:24 PM CST reply actions

Prediction:

They will finish this game shooting less than 40%, and we will finish shooting over 40%.
ISU is at 43% right now, we are at 39%.

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 14, 2012 4:31 PM CST reply actions

Nice to see us make a run

with T-Rob on the bench. Get him rested for the finish.

by hunter s. royal on Jan 14, 2012 4:33 PM CST reply actions

Go Tyshawn go!

Just when he’s just about to drive me completely crazy, he has a great offensive burst and drives us to the lead.

by hunter s. royal on Jan 14, 2012 4:36 PM CST up reply actions

Was Royce White in prison or something?

Those are the worst tats I’ve ever seen. Ever.
