Kansas Football Depth Chart Released

Turner Gill and the Kansas Jayhawks have released the official depth chart for game one against McNeese State this afternoon.

Not a whole lot in the way of surprises on the offensive side of the ball.  James Sims will start in the backfield but expect to see plenty of rotation between Sims, Brandon Bourbon, Darrian Miller and Anthony Pierson.

On the offensive line the Jayhawks are experienced with four juniors and one senior slated in the starting rotation.  Expect Riley Spencer and Gavin Howard to be the primary two rotating in as needed, but it is interesting to see three true freshman listed on the two deep.

Jimmay Mundine's absence might raise a few eyebrows given the strong praise he received last Fall and leading into the Summer.  But it is a position where the Jayhawks have three experienced seniors and Mundine did miss some time over the Summer months.

On the defensive side of the ball Kevin Young was able to beat out Richard Johnson in a move that probably provides the defensive front with a little more quickness.  The linebackers look much more athletic on paper than in years past and have a completely different look with plenty of new faces.  In defensive backfield things look to have shaped up almost exactly as one would have expected based on the indications from the staff over the past six months.

Two freshman get the nod on special teams with Alex Mueller taking the place kicking duties and Tanner Gibas winning out as the longsnapper which was to be expected.  If you're going to give a longsnapper a scholarship, he should be able to start.

The most interesting things to me

1) Ron Doherty punting. For whatever reason, I expected Victor McBride to win that battle.
2) Kale Pick not starting.
3) A safety, Bradley McDougald as 2nd string KR (I expected Brandon Burbon or maybe even Tony Pierson).
4) A dude we just converted from OL to DL is already second string (either Randall Dent is that good, or we just have no depth whatsoever at DL).

  1. - Only two receiver positions slotted on the depth chart. We look set with a fullback and a tight end. I think if we go three receiver set we end up with Pick in the game.
  1. - No depth. What we do have is dinged up, so…not good.

1. I don’t know why, but I expected McBride to be our punter too. Maybe it’s just because I’ve always thought of Doherty as a placekicker.
2. Even though he’s not starting, I think Pick’s going to play a ton.
3. I expected to see Bourbon on here too.
4. Dent’s an animal. Actually I have no idea, but let’s hope so.

Jumping from OL to DL is pretty common

Or at least it has been for us. KU has switched guys from OL to DL and back several times over the past few seasons. I knew a guy who was a backup lineman on the team a few years ago who got switched and I asked him about it. He basically said “the trenches are the trenches” and that going against those guys all the time also helps with the switch.

But like you said… yeah no depth. Scary.

As far as KR, McDougald has done it for us in the past. I was hoping he wouldn’t be this year because I don’t want him getting hurt. Maybe guys like Bourban still need to see lanes better. Remember, Gill could switch this soon and might just be giving more veteran guys a nod.

Wasn't Dent on the DL last year?

I think he has actually spent more time at KU there than OL.

Things that interested me...

1) Tyler Patmon not starting. I know he wasn’t a true corner last year, but given the way he played as a freshman last year, don’t we have to get him on the field? It’s not like Barfield and Brown are standout cover corners.

2) Isaac Wright on the 2 deep, but no Colin Garrett. Garrett was drawing rave reviews from coaches this month, and I never heard much of anything about Wright. Not a huge surprise, but I expected to see Garrett on there.

3) Beshears starting, no sign of Chris Omigie. Beshears and Patterson HAVE to be the shortest pair of starting receivers in the Big 12, if not all of BCS football. We won’t have much of a deep passing game with just those two on the field.

4) The whole “one DE, two DTs, and a BUCK” thing. The staff has never really come out and said, “yeah, we’re running a 3-4.” It seems they’re still only willing to kind-of-basically admit to the switch.

No touching!

Yes

1) I think we’ll see Tyler in the nickel. He’s a playmaker.
2) Agreed. We suddenly have a lot of depth at LB. Remember last year?
3) That’s a great point. Supposedly Beshears has a monster vertical. Let’s hope so.
4) I don’t think I agree here. I’m pretty sure this was officially announced. I’m too lazy to go look right now.

1. Wasn’t Patmon hurt? Maybe I’m thinking of a different CB.
2. I think if you’re on the two deep at LB, you’re going to play. I think they’ll be rotating guys in left and right, and it’s asking quite a bit to throw a true freshman into the fray the first game.
3. Like I said above, I don’t know that starting means that much at WR. I think they’re going to be rotating guys in quite a bit.
4. I think I’m agreeing with PenHawk here. I don’t remember them ever officially saying that the 3-4 was going to be their base defense. I’ve heard players say that and I’ve seen where coaches are talking about the 3-4, but this makes it look like that’s what we’re doing.

Barfield was the CB who was hurt

Missed the spring game and a lot of practice, but he is a senior

Right on 4

tho this is the first they have showed the 3-4in a depth chart or anything like that

If you can find a link

to where a coach (not a player) has stated that they are switching to a 3-4, please post it. Plenty of players have referred to it, but I have yet to hear a coach say this.

No touching!

your interests are pertinent

1- not that I know, but probably tackling – both after receptions and run support.
2- rave reviews by coaches are often motivational … both ways.
3- height is less important downfield than across middle or sideline routes. Three receivers common for passing situations. On runs, enough speed to occupy 3 defenders is big.
4- terminology is new to me – ‘buck’ may take 3-pt stance for some plays? or have more open assignments.

Buck is pretty much a DE masquerading as a OLB (like Tamba Hali or DeMarcus Ware)

I’ve always heard a 3-4 outside pass rusher linebacker refered to as “Jack” but I guess we are calling him “Buck.”

Exactly

Toben Opurum will be doing what Von Miller had been doing at Texas A&M the last couple of years (hopefully with the same level of success)

No touching!

I think the staff has decided Patmon is a true nickel

He really thrived on covering slot guys and playing closer to the box last year. Its like when Mangino and co. figured out that Chris Harris was a much better fit to play inside as a nickel guy.

I think Barfield has more experience playing outside, and given the spread offenses in this league… its kind of a moot point on who starts. I’d bet money that on at least half of our defenses snaps this year, we’ll have 5 DBs on the field – Barfield-Brown-Patmon-McDougald-Terry. That’ll be the third down D as well as the “holy shit the other team has four WRs out there” D

Some other thoughts

1. I wonder if Mueller will do kickoffs as well or just field goals? Supposedly, kickoffs were his weak spot.
2. I don’t expect Pierson to redshirt, but it’s interesting that he’s not mentioned anywhere.
3. It’s interesting that Bourbon is basically considered on par with Miller.
4. Ed Fink just switched to fullback and he’s already #2 on the depth chart. Of course, I don’t know if that really means much as long as Sizemore stays healthy.

by ISellDrugs on Aug 29, 2011 7:40 PM CDT reply actions

And thats why Doherty was valuable

Since he is supposed to be a kickoff specialist. I thought Mueller would place kick and Doherty would do kickoffs…

4. – Surprised me as well because we have two other fullbacks on the roster behind Sizemore

I like Fink at FB.

It’s that image from the mud.

It’s also fun to think of another LB hunting LB’s.

My guess is they wouldn’t have moved him just for the heck of it.

by dagger108 on Aug 29, 2011 10:45 PM CDT up reply actions

again, pertinent

1- an extra 40# on kickoffs may be significant – on coverage (safety) as well.
2- coaches may just want/need to wait-and-see. injuries may determine this.
3- all to the good if they’re needed.
4- wasn’t he a two-way player in HS? FB is easy to pick up with ordinary smarts. Just be hungry for contact, and deliver, not receive the blow.

Interested to see what we get from Tharp

Seems like he and Bakare are similar type guys – fast, undersized outside backers. I think if Tharp shows the ability he did as freshman though… gotta find a way to get him on the field.

by Andrew Clark on Aug 29, 2011 9:24 PM CDT reply actions

Bakare's speed

I’m interested to see how close to 4.3 (claimed) Bakare is. Tharpe may be fast for a LB, but 4.3 is fast for anyone on the field.

Bakare, Willis, Wright, Walker is quite a load of new LB’s without even getting into the freshmen, and hopefully result in more than 3 W’s.

by dagger108 on Aug 29, 2011 11:01 PM CDT up reply actions

I think

Tharp not starting may still be related to the injury last year. I believe I read a quote from him at the beginning of the month saying he still doesn’t feel like he’s recovered all the way.

No touching!

I didn't see this discussed on here yet

but it’s pretty awesome that Toben is one of the captains. To go from the leading rusher as a freshman and then buy in and switch positions and now be an awesome D-lineman and captain? That’s a hell of a kid.

I write everywhere. You're probably better off following me on twitter

by fetch9 on Aug 29, 2011 10:02 PM CDT reply actions

Great point

I am really looking forward to seeing if we have any on field players that can really rally the team at appropriate times to create or change momentem.

by ocjhawk on Aug 30, 2011 7:58 AM CDT up reply actions

DE or DT?

Weren’t Keba, Lewandowski, and Young all DE’s that they were trying to grow into DT’s. With 2 DT’s and 1 DE, it looks unbalanced and small, but realizing how similar those 3 are around Williams/Dent makes it seem more balanced to me.

Then, if you switch Johnson for Young and bring Toben to the line for short yardage, it really isn’t much different than a traditional 4-3 like last year. Okay, so maybe that isn’t the best thing going, but I’m still hoping we’ve developed since last year.

by dagger108 on Aug 29, 2011 10:56 PM CDT reply actions

I would be surprised

if we just end up lining up in a routine 3-4 base and staying put. I think the coaching staff is planning on showing opponents a wide variety of looks to keep the offense guessing with their blocking schemes, thus hopefully making things easier for our rather weak d-line.

Just a guess.

No touching!
