O/T What Music are You Listening To?

We had a thread like this a few months ago, and I added some pretty solid songs to my collections based off it (it finally motivated me to check out Mumford & Sons).  It seems like a ton of new albums have come out recently, so I thought I'd get a new one going.

Here's what I've been listening to...
Foo Fighters - Wasting Light
The Decemberists - The King is Dead (maybe my favorite right now)
Death Cab for Cutie - Codes and Keys
Beastie Boys - Hot Sauce Committee Pt 2 (a lot of their older stuff too)
Kid Cudi - Man on the Moon: The End of Day/Man on the Moon 2
Mumford & Sons - Sigh No More
Eminem - Recovery
Blink 182 - Every album they've ever made
The Damned Things - Ironiclast
AFI - Crash Love
Parkway Drive - Deep Blue

Not all of these are brand new albums or anything, but that's what I've listened to the past few days.  What do you got?

By now

I think we all know my taste in music is horrible

New Foo Fighters album is really good

Much better than their last few efforts. Nothing can touch “The Colour and the Shape” though. That album just delivers track after track. Has some of their best songs “Everlong, My Hero, etc” with really good “filler” tracks like Hey Johnny Park! That album is still one of my favorites.

If you are into British punk mixed with some alternative/dub stuff, check out the new album by the King Blues. Has several good tracks on it – We are F*cking Angry, Headbutt, 5 bottles of shampoo all worth downloading.

I’ve been listening to a lot of my 90s stuff lately too. Soundgarden – SuperUnknown (not a bad track on the album), Jane’s Addiction – Ritual De Lo Habitual (same).

Edward Sharpe And The Magnetic Zeros

The Black Keys

A bit on the folky/indy/alternative side of things, but that’s how I tend to lean.

That down by the water song by the decemberists is fantastic

Here is what I’ve been playing on grooveshark.com for the last couple weeks

Living Legends- Purple Kush
Rappin 4-tay- Playaz club
swizz beats- top down
Jayz/Jermaine Dupree- money aint a thang
Metallica- Astronomy (I highly recommend this one)
STP- all their 90’s hits
Nirvana- unplugged

I love these threads, thanks for posting this. I’ve got some new things to check out

If you like old school NWBHM

You need to check out the new Cauldron cd. It just came out in May. I swear to God those three dudes from Toronto, CA have somehow been transported back to 1985 London, England. Their first CD is a gem as well.

Also been listening to the new Helloween cd. And Running Wild’s (German metal band) entire catalog. Their early stuff is comical because I can’t really tell if they truly believe they are Satanist, or just using devil worship to get attention and sell some records.

“Chains and Leather” is a great example. Fantastic song that rocks. But then they throw in the line: “even Satan wears leather, our souls will live forever” and you can’t help but laugh and think: wtf?

For some rason

I feel like the NWOBHM opinions won’t be listened to.
The last few helloween releases have been great, the Dark Ride had some particularly great tracks. Helloween is just good across the board. Last couple King Diamond releases have been sick nasty good. It’s really hard to go wrong with and King release.

Eclectic fan? You don't know the half of it.

Love it

“Give me your soul……please?” is one of my favorite cds of all time ever. King Diamond is awesome. What I think is ironic is that he writes his music these days from his ranch outside of Dallas, TX. Not what you would expect from some Danish dude writing about heavy, dark concepts!

Yup, excellent points about my NWOBHM opinion and King Diamond.

I dig the music those types of bands play

but the vocals ruin it for me. IMO, dark European metal should be accompanied by screaming (e.g. Children of Bodom, Dark Tranquility, Dimension Zero, etc.)

by PenHawk on May 21, 2011 5:06 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm exactly the opposite

and it really has to do with age.

I’m from the age where metal was sung by powerful vocalist. Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden), Rob Halford (Judas Priest), Klaus Meine (Scorpions), Ronnie James Dio……those dudes could sing a vocal melody and add substance to a song.

The dudes these days that sound like Satan constipated trying to take a growler……..there is no melody in that. That doesn’t add much to the song, imho.

My younger brother has tried to get me into some of those bands……the only one that’s really had an impact is Bullet For My Valentine. I love BFMV, especially the newer stuff because the guy can actually sing and the newer stuff has less of the screaming thing than the older stuff.

My Music as of Late

I’ve been into rap and hip hop again. I listen to everything but I tend to have spurts of certain types…

Wiz Khalifa ft. Too Short – On My Level
David Guetta ft. Kid Cudi – Memories
Dank One ft. Philly Blunt – Night Ridin’
Playalitcal ft. Bizzy Bone – Doin’ it Wrong
Jerimih ft. 50 Cent – Down on Me
Troop 41 – Do The John Wall
The Lonely Island ft. Michael Bolton – Jack Sparrow
Audiopush – Teach Me How To Jerk
Cali Swag District – Teach Me How To Dougie

What do I put here?

Here's a random one for you...

Trampled By Turtles

If you enjoyed the recent Mumford kick these guys are pretty good too. They’re a little more traditional bluegrass but they’re very talented. I saw them out here in Denver a few months back and I’ve been hooked. Recommendations: Wait So Long, Victory, Help You. Those are songs that can get you started. Again, it’s a certain type of music but you mentioned Mumford and both are playing the Telluride Bluegrass Festival this summer so it might be worth a try.

just gave them a listen

a little bit on the twangy side, but pretty solid. I’d recommend them to anyone else who likes Mumford as well.

If you haven't, check out South Austin Jug Band.

Not sure if they’re still playing but very similar.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

On a related note

Anyone here going to Rockkansas or whatever its called, at the speedway? Lots of good bands like Muse, the Black Keys, Flaming Lips and several hip-hop guys are going to be there too

Totally forgot

White Rabbits (somewhat local to KC, if I recall correctly, maybe on the MO side?) One of their albums was produced by Brit Daniels (?) from Spoon, which gives you a bit of a clue to their alt-rock/pop style.
-The Plot
-Percussion Gun
-Kid On My Shoulders
-While We Go Dancing

(heard about them from a similar discussion on the RR blog, I think)

Other Lives

Check out this band from Stillwater (Other Lives). Just released their first full length.
If you have not yet checked out O’Brother or Colour Revolt then you have no excuse not to.
And…of course Manchester Orchestra just released the Simple Math cd.
Bonus recommendation…I do not listen to Gogol Bordello unless I really have my drink on, but if you ever have the opportunity to see them live they are a must see.

Late entry- Zac brown band with Jimmy Buffet "knee deep"

For those who like countryish beach songs. Zac brown can pick a mean guitar

by fizzle406 on May 27, 2011 12:20 PM CDT reply actions

I remember when the Lost Trailers had covered 'Chicken Fried' and had it all ready to go as a single

then Zac Brown had heard the direction they were going and backed out of the deal and released it on his own, as a Trailers (old school stuff) fan I was kind of pissed. But now can’t really say much.

Old Lost Trailers stuff is really good, Welcome to the Woods was a very good album. As for new music, I’ve been in a bit of rut. Love Drive By Truckers “Big To Do” and not sure I’ve listened to any other new music lately.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

Some solid stuff listed already. Along with the last thread.

Some new stuff for y’all to try out.

Monster – Kanye West http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ona42jz8w0k

Skrillex remix of La Roux’s In for the Kill http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpEOErRV-u4

Datsik & Excision – Swagga http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cpb2d3zGczI

Skrillex remix of Cinema http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LaIZ0mUJzr0

The new Kanye is from the new Hangover movie. Last 3 work best when hooked to a sub. My music taste vary, but this is a different type of music than what’s already listed. And yeah, I went to Ultra in March.
