Around SBN: Yankees Deny Rumors That Team Is For Sale

"Josh went to Las Vegas with our permission to work out a few days to get a feel for where he’d potentially be (in 2011 NBA Draft). It’s something we did not discourage. We are fine with it," Self said.

"He has not declared (for draft) nor is he committed to an agent. We said he could have a few days to get a better feel for where he is by working out with some folks in Vegas.

"As far as schoolwork, he is OK there. He has put himself in a position he could afford to miss a few days. He will need to get back by next week," Self added.

Answers some of the questions that have popped in a few threads this week.

Him still going to class

is very good sign. I think he will be back after he gets feedback on his draft position. If he can play like he did before the ankle injury, he should be a lottery pick.

Agreed.

Gotta wonder though how a guy that just went through a Big 12 season in Jan/Feb and two weekends of the tournament in March can still afford to miss another week of class to go to Vegas.

If the classes are easy, you don't need to go really

My last semester at KU I had a hard campaigns class for my major (which I attended every day) and then two blow-off poly sci classes. Were talking classes where its mostly freshmen, a third of the class is really dumb (and probably about to flunk out when you look at the weedout rate KU has with incomming freshmen), the other third doesn’t care, etc. I mean, the discussions would include lines like “well I don’t like Obama cuz he doesn’t like America I think” and “Well I am a republican because I support our troops and the democrats don’t support the military and are against us having a military”

So I end up not going to either class. Ever. Just showed up for days we had tests. Read the chapter, filled out the study guides and studied for tests, but never went (hey it was my last semester, my GPA wasn’t going to change much).

I got an A in one and a B+ in the other. I mean, I got decent grades but I wasn’t like some 4.0 student. But if your professors don’t take attendance (and most don’t/can’t with the big lecture classes) and you do a little reading and learn the basics of the studyguide they give you, boom.

Point of the story – people always so “oh my God student athletes have it so easy and get off the hook” but I mean, its college. It depends on your GPA. I went to all my journalism classes because I had to. But if you have a major that is something more liberal arts based like these poly sci classes were, you can coast and do whatever, athlete or non-athlete.

And unless your name is Sasha Kaun, most athletes are not majoring in fields like engineering

Agreed, mostly...

However, as you mentioned regarding the easy poly-sci class, there are a third of those incoming freshmen that seem to be really dumb and will ultimately drop out. I have a feeling that without all of the additional tutoring, many of the athletes would fall into that category. So, athlete or non-athlete can coast through the easy classes if they are smart enough to do so, the athlete has more of a crutch to fall back on than the non-athlete.

Without a doubt

and Selby has all the help in the world, I’m sure. However, once the season’s over is probably a good time to at least act like a student for the basketball players.

I completely agree--except if you have a douche-y professor who gives "attendance quizzes."

I had a professor in a similar blowoff class in the spring of 1998 (my last semester), that got pissed that some students were not coming to class, and still acing his tests. So he started passing around a sheet of paper with every student’s name on it, and you had to sign next to your name, He called them “attendance quizzes” and made them a decent portion of the grade. By the time we figured out what he was doing, we’d missed a couple of these “quizzes”, and I ended up getting a B in the class, while never getting below an A on any test.

Yes, I’m still bitter.

My micro-econ teacher gave a quiz at the beginning of class on Fridays.

It was normally a short 5 question quiz covering the week’s info, main intention was ensuring students still had a reason to go to class on Fridays at 1:30 in the afternoon. At least 3 separate times, I took the quiz and then got up and walked out of class after 5 minutes. I guess some of the other students didn’t like it but the prof never said a thing.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

Mine was Micro as well!

Except my prof would pass around the sheet at random times, so you couldn’t just show up, sign, and leave. He also had an accent so thick it was nearly impossible to understand him. Did I mention I’m still bitter? :)

Sorry, but

When a journalism major who isn’t nerd level smart (not to toot my own horn) takes three poly sci classes at KU, doesn’t go to class once, and gets an A, A- and B+ in the three classes…

Well, my opinion is what it is

yeah I sluffed off pretty bad, I won't lie

although some of our upper level ones required some work.

by fetch9 on Apr 6, 2011 12:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Indeed.

I was a Poli Sci major too. My last two or three semesters were a bitch. Nothing but reading, writing tons of essays, giving presentations, etc. Couldn’t slouch off then. But any 100 level class was a piece of cake.

Funny (at least to me) story about classes with Basketball players

My senior year I took a 400 level Bio class on Eusocial Insects. The class had 2 Profs and 12 students, half of whom were grad students. Also in the class was Greg Ostertag. The class was grind, and I furiously took notes on differences between certain genus of wasps, how termites were hemimetabolous and why Eusociality was so common in the Vespines. Greg Ostertag just sat there and read the UDK. I always wondered why the hell he signed up for the class.

Later I heard he stayed academically eligible by signing up for classes that took their tests in the lecture halls in Wescoe. Being 7’ 2" in the stadium seating meant that you could clearly see the tests in the row in front of you. Strangely he always sat behind A students.

I took a similar poli sci class in college

My favorite quote was from some douche who asked the professor “Why do you act like its a bad thing that over a billion people live on less than a dollar a day?”
the professor just stared at him blankly for about a minute before tearing into him. it was hilarious

Self needs to have his boy R.C. Buford give Selby a call

“Josh, I’ll be blunt. We wouldn’t draft you this year with the 30th pick. Right now you couldn’t beat out a starting PG in.this league for their job. But what do I know- I’ve only won multiple rings.”

What's the consensus here?

Is keeping Selby one more year worth stunting Johnson’s growth a bit? It seems like there will be a bit of a logjam in the guard rotation for you guys next year.

With the Morri likely leaving,

we’ll take all the scoring options we can get next year.

I'd like to see him come back.

I think he’s far more talented than we saw this year (well, we saw flashes, but they were very brief). If we have 3 solid guards in T2, EJ and Selby, I’m fine with that. Releford and McLemore will get some minutes at the 3, but we can always go w/ a 3 guard lineup, too.

Selby needs to get healthy. He wasn’t for much of this past season, which really hurt his production. He has the potential to be a huge asset for this team, we just didn’t get to see it much last season. I hope he comes back, but we’ll be fine either way.

And I don't think it's stunts Johnson much...

We had a pretty solid three guard rotation for a couple years with Robinson, Chalmers and Collins at the 1-2. If Selby comes back it would be: Taylor, Selby and Johnson. I could see all three getting 22-30 minutes a game and it working extremely well, if not better than the above combo. Unfortunately, the above combo also had Rush at the 3 and a slew of guys inside. This team won’t have that complement.

And what Warden said.

by hiphopopotamus on Apr 6, 2011 10:11 AM CDT up reply actions

Hard to say.

Royce, Roberts, Tharpe are the players we could see, I suppose. I’d give Tharpe the inside track on playing time, just because he seems to be a pure-ish point guard. But who knows? Woolridge is a scorer, and I’m not sure we’ll need that.

by Bensa on Apr 6, 2011 10:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Are we considering McLemore a guard or SF?

I think he’ll contribute no matter who comes back, but I don’t think Royce or Tharpe will contribute much other than scrub time. I could definitely see Teahan playing a bit of a role if he gets his shot down

by Walshdollar on Apr 6, 2011 3:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Heck, the way our team is looking for next season

McLemore might play power forward

Just Kidding……::burries head in hands and breaks down::

I think Self will likely rotate Gimme More McLemore and Releford at the three, or play him at the three and Releford at the four in small lineup.

If we lose everybody, I think you’ll see:

Taylor
Johnson
McLemore
Releford
Withey

Don’t think that’ll happen (God I hope not) but I think he and Releford rotate at the three spot mostly. Self likes to have two ball handlers out there as often as he can, and McLemore’s height could be useful at the three if we have undersized guys at the four and/or five

Having a logjam is a good thing

As long as all the guys are OK with having to share time and compete for minutes.
