Some excellent analysis on Slick Rick Barnes from the great Pete Thamel of the New York Times.

I'm not sure that "Any press is good press" applies here.

all in all
speaking from a longhorn fan, its pretty obvious that the team has hit a wall. Still, no one (from Texas at least) thought this team would be this good this year and they still exceeded expectations thus far.
Hopefully, they can regain their mojo in time for the big dance. Hopefully, we’ll get a rematch with you guys in the Big 12 conf title game
I think Barnes has hit the ceiling
of what he can do for Texas. If his AD is happy with the attendance at games and performance of the program, there’s no need to move on. But I don’t know if Barnes can take the next step and become a true national power – which means you have to get to multiple Elite Eights and Final Fours.
Agree with this
I’ve said that about Barnes for years. Plus, in Texas were football is EVERYTHING… I mean… do they really care that much?
I don’t know, and I’m not trying to knock Texas basketball or its fans, just kind of bringing back up a stereotype that seems to be at least somewhat accurate
Shit happens when you win championships
They care
But only in March. Until they care the rest of the season, they won’t have an elite program.

Not sure if Texas really exceeded expectations.
“Look really good then collapse mysteriously” was EXACTLY the common expectation.
This season, Texas managed to look good just long enough to get people on board the bandwagon again—-before the wheels fell off. It’s kinda been an amusing demonstration of crowd psychology.
Now, people will probably swing back too far the other way (including many Texas fans, I bet). But I don’t think this is 2010 all over again; I think Texas will do significantly better in the postseason than last year.
