Photo Evidence: Were Taylor's Misses "Good"?
Comments following the Missouri game on Monday were definitely interesting. All kinds of things to discuss and very few things to be down about. Markieff Morris losing his head yet again was one of those things and the video evidence on that one is pretty clear cut. The other big discussion that popped on here following the game was the play of Tyshawn Taylor. As I've said previously, I don't think there's a right or wrong answer with the guy. He does some very good things and he leaves you doing this:
(smh: shaking scratching my head)
The particular discussion I'm going to address is whether or not his missed layups were "good shots" even though they weren't made baskets on the initial try. And really, I'm not going to address it at all. That's for you guys to figure out, I'm just going to share the evidence and plays in question and let RCT decide in the comments (if anyone still feels like talking about it)
Taylor Shot #1
Taylor Shot #2
Taylor Shot #3 (video quality goes downhill from here but you can still make out KU and MU players, so I didn't worry about it)
Taylor Shot #4
Taylor Shot #5
Taylor Shot #6
Taylor Shot #7
And Taylor Shot #8

Was it with his left hand?
Then it’s a bad shot.

Interesting
I don’t mind him taking those shots, I was just upset he couldn’t make them. Two strait games he hasn’t been able to convert close to the rim, and we will need him to score those when our outside shooting isn’t hitting
Shit happens when you win championships
Anyone who has played competitive basketball at any level
knows that sometimes the ball just won’t go down. As long as you are taking smart shots and helping to contribute in other ways, you’re fine. To me, I wasn’t mad that TT shot the way he did yesterday, it was more of the , “ouch”, reaction. I can only think of a couple times that I thought he may have forced it.

The only other person who can get to the rim
is Selby. And when he gets there he doesn’t make them either. Unfortunately these didn’t go down but when you show such ability to get to the rim it makes the defense sag a bit and open up the perimeter.

Just so everyone knows, the picture of Taylor scratching his head is my favorite.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

I will say this
I’m not sure if it’s one of the pictures here, but there was a play where we isolated Tyshawn at the top of the key with everyone else on the baseline. Tyshawn made a really nice move to get to the elbow, and then hit a smooth pull-up jumper.
If a game comes down to a last-shot scenario, I still think I would rather have Marcus involved, but a high pick and roll with Tyshawn could work.

oh definitely
Tyshawn isn’t a good shooter, that’s for sure. Id rather have Reed running a pick and roll with one of the twins, or hell something with the twins doing their thing.
I'm suprised that you would say that, Fetch
Tyshawn isn’t a good shooter, that’s for sure
I’ve always felt Tyshawn got an unfair rap as a “bad shooter.” So I did some searching and discovered this about his career shooting totals…
FG% 47%, 3PT% 35%, 2PT% 51%, FT% 75%
For a guard, that’s really not bad at all. Not great 3pt shooting, but not God-awful either. Now let’s compare that to Tyrel Reed (a consensus good shooter) and his career stats…
FG% 44%, 3PT% 41%, 2PT% 50%, FT% 82%
Not much better. In fact, he’s worse in 2 point shooting and overall FG%. Granted, Reed wins out in eFG with 59% compared to 51%, but the fact remains: Taylor is not a terrible shooter, and despite the wild layup attempts, he makes 2 point shots at a better clip than Tyrel Reed.
By the way, does anyone know of site where I can just look at their career totals combined? Because I had to look up each individual season and add them up with a calculator. Too old school for my taste.
Statsheet has the yearly averages and career averages on the player pages.
Not raw totals though in case you were wanting how many 3’s Reed has made in his career. ESPN’s player pages have it easily accessible with raw totals, here is Reed’s page.
This might be exactly what you want, men’s college basketball reference. Click on a player and it’s got a handy table with career numbers.

35% isn't terrible
And there are a ton of guys who are great shooters from 16-18 feet but are mediocre 3 point guys (about 60% of the NBA, for example). Does that mean they aren’t good shooters?

It appears
from my viewpoint that he is looking to alley oop a bit too much. When he gets the corner it’s usually a quick 2 on 1. Maybe just going strong and finish a few times and then the opp will open up more.
He can't finish at the rim.
I cannot tell you how sick it makes me when he overshoots a routine layup. Which is at least twice a game. It’s a damn shame because he sure can penetrate and get to the basket.
I eat nails for breakfast, tacks for snacks, and I sh*t nickel.
Are you kidding me?
In said situation, you don’t take the shot…you pass the ball to the open man. But there have been times where he beats his man with no one else in his way. Surprise! He misses those, too.

Nice look on these Warden -
If you notice a common denominator here is that in every picture there are at least one or two players WIDE open on the perimeter.
Yea ≠ Yeah
most of these are post-shot though (I think)
so the defenders would naturally suck into the lane a bit.
