More Info on Weis
Lots of talk going on all over about the hire. I'm not sold but this post isn't concerned one way or the other with whether or not this is a good hire. Just providing some information that I've gathered quickly this morning, use this as a place to fact check a few of the claims that are being made about his tenure at Notre Dame. If there is anything that is missing, throw it in the comments and I'll see what if I can find.
(edit: Weis was at Notre Dame for the 2005-2009 seasons)
First up, recruit rankings for each class from scout.com from 2003 to 2012. That puts us a few years before Weis and a few years post-Weis. Thought that might help in determining his impact on the program. The table also includes the rankings for KU during the same time, just to give an idea for the different level of talents.
| Year | ND Recruit Rank | KU Recruit Rank |
|---|---|---|
| 2003 |

Weis had some very good classes during his 5 years at Notre Dame. The school also had some good classes before he got there and have had some very good classes after his firing. Either way, we can be pretty confident that our numbers will look better in a short period of time.
Moving on, Sagarin, FEI, S+P, and S+P+ offensive ranks for the years available.
| Year | Sagarin Rating | FEI Rank | S+P Rank | S+P Off Rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2003 | 43 | |||
| 2004 | 31 | |||
| 2005 | 8 | 12 | 8 | |
| 2006 | 23 | 26 | 7 | |
| 2007 | 90 | 74 | 90 | 118 |
| 2008 | 53 | 50 | 54 | 63 |
| 2009 | 48 | 31 | 37 | 21 |
| 2010 | 19 | 23 | 11 | 29 |
| 2011 | 24 | 21 | 10 | 18 |
Notre Dame's schedule has seem to come into play here as an excuse for why the program stumbled in his 3rd, 4th, and 5th years at the school. Here is the yearly breakdown of their schedule rank according to Sagarin and FEI.
| Year | FEI Sch Rank | Sag Sch Rank |
|---|---|---|
| 2003 | 1 | |
| 2004 | 5 | |
| 2005 | 14 | |
| 2006 | 18 | |
| 2007 | 38 | 24 |
| 2008 | 20 | 50 |
| 2009 | 53 | 37 |
| 2010 | 40 | 22 |
| 2011 | 20 | 26 |
Not a cupcake schedule but also not a murderer's row according to this information.

If...
We get Jim Leavitt at DC and Dayne Crist transfers and takes over at QB, how can you be against the hire?
Nicknames I have coined:
Jamaal Charles = 'Haley's Comet'
Shaun Smith = 'Big Nasty'
Kelly Gregg = 'Old Gregg'
I might be a little more convinced.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

Dayne Crist
Is only going to be here one year and could break his ankled the first practice for all we know. He can’t be used as a “reason” to like a hire, IMHO.

He was there '05-'09, right?
A useful little tidbit.
Yes, sorry should have included that.

I'm still hoping for Doeren as DC/AHC
but maybe even more interested in the S&C coach and the big nasties for the DT’s & OL.
I had a dream last night that Larry Coker was going to be the new OC
Seems really random.

I can't read much new
into this info – we already knew ND (with any coach) recruiting is head and shoulders above KU (and will continue to be). Weiss’ name will make a bigger difference here (relative to where we’ve been) than it could at ND. No one but Punxatawnie Phil can say how big or for how long.
If 2005-‘09 was a “learning period” vis-a-vis the college world, how much does it matter? I don’t mean to belittle the blog, just to put some perspective on it. We have a pretty good in-state example that a lot of things are more important than the rank of recruiting classes.
