Now is the time for Kansas to fire Turner Gill - KansasCity.com
Mellinger says the time is now and believes the job is a better one than it appears to be. I'm skeptical but a pirate doesn't need a pretty job.

Woke This Morning
and Turner Gill is still the head coach of KU’s football program? The sooner, the better, folks.
Tait's twitter
said “step 1 starts today”. I expect to hear sometime this afternoon
Pay heed...

The local media is giving us a hand
But the record speaks for itself. Gill takes MAC team from laughingstock to respectability, then takes Big 12 team from respectability to laughingstock. As one blogger said " what goes around comes around". Full circle.
I am
anxious to hear if the NBA put a age limit on incoming players or will allow straight out of high school players. I know it is secondary to all the money issues but it does have a influence on the college game.
They havent discussed this issue yet
Right now I’d put my money on them keeping things the way they are, simply because neither side wants to block the entire deal over something they can tolerate.
From strictly an NBA perspective, the current system “works.” And there simply isn’t time right now to completely revamp the amateur system before the season starts.

I've been saying the same thing for over a year:
“Recruiting rankings don’t support the accepted narrative that Gill inherited a hopeless roster, and some NFL scouts think the talent difference between KU and K-State is nominal. The difference is the coaches”
And:
“Many coaches judge a job’s attractiveness in terms of expectations and the resources available to exceed them. KU’s roster is made up of recruiting classes ranked by Rivals between fourth (2009) and eighth (2010) in the Big 12.
Recruiting rankings have flaws, but the players KU had this year and will have next year were ranked higher than the ones who won the Orange Bowl after the 2007 season.
Mark Mangino proved that a career assistant can win under the right circumstances at KU, and years of record attendance proved that fans will support a good program."
Mellinger hit it right on the head.

recruiting rankings are even more worthless than normal for this discussion
unless you are willing to factor out all the players that left the program after they signed with KU. Some defections are to be expected, but the entire strength of the classes are gone.
Who does this fanbase want?
Leach? Tressel? Mark Stoops? What about Luke Fickell?
Pecota, watch over us.
Not a Leach fan
But any of those would be an improvement

Agreed.
I love listening to Leach speak. I just don’t want him in our program…..

after Charlie Strong was gone to L-ville, but isn’t USF spiraling down at the moment. Kind of right up there with Mr T-ville and several other ’09 options.
Now that I think about it, though...

Put me down as a Leach guy
But what I really want is someone that has proven they can win in a BCS conference. No more assistants, no more “up and comers” from directional schools.

Erickson?
I know he’s getting a bit long in the tooth but…
probably Fulmer before him Id think.

Fulmer, Leach, baby Stoops
In that order. Obviously Tressel, but that’s not serious.

I'd add Fedora to that list
Along with Andrew Clark (a young up and comer, but at the very least he’ll do a better job than Gill).

As long as Andrew Clark
brings Rivethead with him as a S&C coach, I’m on board with that.

Amen to this.
Don’t really want Leach. I don’t want to be a joke or sideshow anymore. Let’s get back to trying to build a real program.
I don't think Texas Tech was a sideshow or a joke.
They were damn good.

Defense wins championships.

Mark Stoops, Luke Fickell, or ...
another D coach that can bring a good OC. Heard that was Dr T’s comment regard not taking Gill.
Would Leach come as OC? JK
just curious
Why does everyone want Fickell?

Does the improvement of the D
indicate that maybe there was something to the (dismissed) notion early in the season that the team hadn’t had sufficient time to learn with the new DC?
Scary to think that the current Sr’s would have a different DC every year they’ve been in school.
The improvement is a bit false
D got lit up last week against TAMU. Other than that, the D played well against ISU, Baylor, and MIzzou and that is it.
ISU – playing their backup QB, couple timely turnovers.
Baylor – Easily the D’s best performance, but once RG3 and the offense woke up and stopped playing like crap, they scored at will.
Mizzou – Tiggers QB threw three passes literally into the hands of one of our DBs. Second half our D got run over.
Other than these three games (and at least half of this was the other team just playing very poorly) our defense gave up at least 40 something to every opponent not named McNeese State. I think the TAMU game proved that our defensive improvement was more playing a team that struggled, or that doesn’t have a good offense to begin with (Mizzou, ISU to some extent).

Agreed.
The 4th quarter against Baylor and the 2nd half yesterday sure didn’t look like an improved unit, especially with the A&M game sandwiched in there.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

How much is depth?
Watching the 3rd string DT from UT make noticably positive plays really seem to underscore the lack of depth for our crew. It would seem that even playing the first string significantly more snaps would lead to decreased performance late in the game.
It would also seem that part of the poor performance by the opposition was better performance by our DL early in the game. It would seem that our fan base would recognize the impact that pressure on the QB could have on O-productivity.
Ultimately, we’re probably in agreement that the amount of improvement is at least less than desirable.
Bloody Sunday Indeed
Any interest in Neuheisel, Zook or Erickson? I’d go no on the last 2 but Neuheisel did pretty well at both CU and UW…
I'd take Neuheisel as a recruiter, but I don't think I'd want him as a HC.
He’s had some good recruiting classes, including one that I believe was top-5, and he’s still struggling to win more than 6 games in his fourth season. That doesn’t give me much hope that he can do well in Lawrence where his recruiting classes won’t be nearly as good. Maybe he needs more time at UCLA, but that 50-0 loss yesterday looks horrible.
I’ll admit I don’t know much about the UCLA team, though, like any injuries and/or suspensions he’s had to deal with. I just see a 6-6 record, including three blowout losses to Texas, Stanford, and USC, and it scares me.
Thank goodness.
All the best to him, somewhere else.
So, can someone enlighten me...
I keep seeing Tressel’s name brought up, and now Erickson’s.
Why are people thinking about them?
Tressel has had very shady goings-on at his last two jobs, and is very likely to have a “show cause” label slapped on him by the NCAA. Do we really want the NCAA putting that kind of watch on us?
Erickson just doesn’t strike me as a “big” hire – he’s been very mediocre at ASU.
I just don’t get it.
I can't enlighten you...
But I would say that if Tressel has interest, we’d be smart to explore the idea. If we find out there’s an NCAA issue there, we back off of course, but as a coach he’s a no-brainer.
Completely agree on Erickson though – as I told bigreed above, I have absolutely zero interest and I can think of no argument to be made for him.
