Kansas Jayhawks v Pittsburg State Gorillas Open Game Thread
November 1st, 20117 pm CSTWhere: Allen Fieldhouse, Lawrence KansasTV: Jayhawk TVOnline: Jayhawk All Access(Radio)
Welcome to the Rock Chalk Talk and your FIRST open thread for the Kansas Jayhawks 2011-2012 basketball season.
Yes it's only an exhibition, but good news is in short supply so I think we're all hoping for some positive things to come out of tonight. Either way tonight's opener promises to be an interesting one as we'll have a chance to see what the Kansas bench has to offer. Thomas Robinson, Tyshawn Taylor and Elijah Johnson are all expected to be out for this one so we'll find out what we're working with deeper into the rotation and get started from there.

I would be surprised if they did to be honest

I think the game has to be televised on at least a regional network to be hijacked by them
I don’t think Jayhawk Sports has that kind of reach

Valid points...
Do you think all online radio is precluded by the All Access stuff?
I’m in class from 7-10 at edwards and missing the game completely will make this even worse…

Withey with his best A'mare Stoudemire impersonation
Good time to pull that out in the exhibition…I don’t think he’ll be doing that much during the season.
by 2.1 seconds left on Nov 1, 2011 7:20 PM CDT reply actions
It's really painful to watch Withey play in these first few minutes..
He just seems to be slow, his shots aren’t really falling (with the exception of that layup drive), and he can’t rebound over a roster who doesn’t have anyone over 6’6"
He will get some major defensive focus taken off of him when T-Rob is back though
by rockchalk1187 on Nov 1, 2011 7:31 PM CDT up reply actions
true
Also, he probably hasn’t played with anyone in this game besides Releford in practice. Maybe some Tharpe.

Good point.
3 starters missing has got to have a big effect.
by hunter s. royal on Nov 1, 2011 7:36 PM CDT up reply actions
might not have to worry about that for much longer

I already love Tharpe.
if he stays 4 years? jesus

Liking the effort Kevin Young is showing on rebounds.
Seems like whenever we miss a shot, he’s there chasing after the ball.
Coming right back in at least.
Must not be too serious.

I don't think Teahan could defend me
but I think he could be a half decent deep threat off the bench. maybe. what am I saying.

He's hands down the best (only?) shooter on the team
So he is going to get play, especially once T-Rob starts getting doubled every play, which I imagine will happen a lot this year.

EJ is a really good shooter.
and Releford is as well.

Have to agree.
They have their moments, but I’d be surprised if either one was consistent on their jumper’s this year.
by hunter s. royal on Nov 1, 2011 7:50 PM CDT up reply actions
they sure are however
not saying they’re Morningstar and Reed but they’re good.
I write everywhere. You're probably better off following me on twitter
They are decent at hitting wide-open three point shots with their feet set off good passes
But they aren’t good shooters, in my opinion. I would not want the play to be drawn up for them if we needed a three to tie and everyone knew it was coming.

3 point shooting stats
Releford:
2009: 3-8 (.375)
2011:14-37 (.378)
Elijah:
2010: 4-14 (.286)
2011: 22-55 (.400)
To compare:
Tyrel:
2009: 49-126 (.389)
2010: 44-93 (.473)
2011: 72-190 (.379)
Brady:
2009: 50-119 (.420)
2010: 19-48 (.386)
2011: 43-105 (.410)
The attempts are so low
And the threes that EJ and Releford took were always wide open, which gets left out of that data
by 2.1 seconds left on Nov 1, 2011 8:27 PM CDT up reply actions
If he can find his freshman form again
he could be very useful. Seemed like he shot 65% from 3 for most of the year, though it was almost all garbage time.
by hunter s. royal on Nov 1, 2011 7:45 PM CDT up reply actions
It's hard to get a good reading on this team from this game
Thank God for that because we look awful.
The starting 5 are going to have to log about 160 minutes a game for us to finish the year in the Top 15. That could happen, but the margin for error is very very small.
Withey drawing a few fouls.
Now if he can make the ft’s…………………….
I foresee tense moments in Big XII play when our bench is in
These guys will definitely get a lot better, but it is going to be tough to find points if all three of the main guys are out at the same time.
by 2.1 seconds left on Nov 1, 2011 7:46 PM CDT reply actions
I can guarantee
that never happens, barring injury (gulp) or a lot of foul trouble

I agree with fetch
Tharpe is looking to be one of my favorite players in coming years if he develops. I like his style.
Tharpe is the only pleasant surprise so far tonight
I’ve never been a Releford fan, but I had high hopes for him coming into tonight. Those haven’t really been realized. Teahan and Young have been about what I expected. Everybody else has been a non-factor, like I expected.
I think Releford's performance is the most dependent on T2 and EJ being out there
His game depends on other people moving the ball, him screening for the ball-handler, or running around screens to get himself open. He’s not a good enough ball-handler to just take over a game unless someone else is helping him out.
by 2.1 seconds left on Nov 1, 2011 7:53 PM CDT up reply actions
without basing a whole season on one half
the biggest problem for me this year is going to be turnovers. Last year we were good enough shooting that we could turn it over a lot more and take more chances. This year we can’t really. Problem is that’s not really our starting point guard’s style
I write everywhere. You're probably better off following me on twitter
Considering our two starting guards are missing this game, I'm going to discount the TO numbers.
Who do we expect to start at the 3? Teahan? Releford? I’m worried about our outside shooting.

Excellent play by Travis
on the fast break off the turnover. He definitely needs a more up tempo game to be most effective.
Pitt State has 14 steals?
Holy hell, we make them look like they’re coached by Mike Anderson
by 2.1 seconds left on Nov 1, 2011 8:27 PM CDT reply actions
Finally looked good on the offensive board.
GOt 3 shots and Teahan finally puts it in.
So my wife just called me in a panic because we are losing...
I’m out of town… WTF is going on? I know were missing… everyone… but I was hoping for something more akin to the first half
Shit happens when you win championships
We're up 6.
Make it 9 as Conner makes another 3. overreaction.

Make it 11 now.
Tharpe with a good basket.
by hunter s. royal on Nov 1, 2011 8:33 PM CDT up reply actions
Have we trailed at all in this game?
I mean, we don’t look good, but I don’t think “losing” means what your wife thinks it means.
Connor Teahan has over 1/3 of our points 7 min into the second half
Didn’t think I’d see that from him (and it is just an exhibition), but good for him
by 2.1 seconds left on Nov 1, 2011 8:34 PM CDT reply actions
I know its crazy, but I'm kind of excited to be so short staffed
We are going to need guys like Tharpe to play this year, and this can only be good for him.
Shit happens when you win championships
I agree
Having no (outside) expectations like in 2008-2009 makes for a really enjoyable season where you can really savor the wins and the growth you see on the court, vs. feeling dissatisfied with a team that you think should play better and wipe the floor with everyone
by 2.1 seconds left on Nov 1, 2011 8:37 PM CDT up reply actions
Having said that
It’d be nice to let the whole team get some seasoning, especially with such a short bench…
Shit happens when you win championships
Travis gets the crowd jacked up
with a big dunk.
By the way
Is anyone else enjoying rooting for a team you know is pretty likely to win? We can point out a lot of flaws in the performance, but it is extremely refreshing to watch my team with pleasure rather than horror for once.
Basketball season is here, and I for one am extremely thankful.

about having something positive to watch.
by hunter s. royal on Nov 1, 2011 8:46 PM CDT up reply actions
Not surprising considering the massive losses
in personnel from last year and having 3 starters out.

It took me a few minutes to figure out who was who when the game started tonight.
Thank goodness they have names on the back of their jerseys!
What? A girl who likes sports...INCONCEIVABLE!
No kidding. I recognize about 3 of these guys by their faces
It makes me feel like a terrible fan.
Only about 3 guys that are playing tonight
are returnees though. We’ll give you another week before banning you.
by hunter s. royal on Nov 1, 2011 8:56 PM CDT up reply actions
This, plus one of the returnees (Teahan) cut his hair so we'll classify it as 2.5 returnees.
What? A girl who likes sports...INCONCEIVABLE!
Speaking of Teahan...
I want to state for the record that I will probably spell his first name incorrectly multiple times during the season. I know he spells it with an “e” but I spell my son’s with an “o” so don’t be surprised if you see Connor instead of Conner. Just throwin that out there.
What? A girl who likes sports...INCONCEIVABLE!
could be worse
Arizona lost their first exhibition and are down by double digits in their second

I was hoping for more from Withey
First game I know but still. Pleasantly surprised by tehan and tharpe though
by fizzle406 on Nov 1, 2011 9:00 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
It's still very early obviously,
but he’s a frustrating guy. Has decent speed for a guy his size, and gets in good position offensively, but just seems to lack the strength to finish, and is a poor free throw shooter.
by hunter s. royal on Nov 1, 2011 9:02 PM CDT up reply actions
Seems to have a better work ethic than Chenowith
But otherwise, he seems very comparable.
Chenowith was disappointing.
His career seemed to steadily go downhill instead of seeing improvement. Kinda like our football team this year. I know, I know. Cheap shot.
What? A girl who likes sports...INCONCEIVABLE!
Yes, his first two years
were pretty solid, then he just seemed to mail in the last couple of years. Supposedly was a big Grateful Dead fan, so I can maybe guess what the problem became. :)
by hunter s. royal on Nov 1, 2011 9:09 PM CDT up reply actions
I think it was Dave Matthews
He took a summer off from basketball to follow the band.
Idiot.

I'm even more depressed about Tarc signing with Arizona
After reading the first three paragraphs (I don’t have Insider) of this article from Dave Telep
Teahen again with the 3.
Great to see that.
He made 3 in a row to start the game.

It's not that I'm lazy; it's that I just don't care.
I think we'd know if it was twitter/facebook
but the rest of those are possibilities.
I guess it happened over the summer
So could have been something with too much partying as well.
It's not that I'm lazy; it's that I just don't care.
I've gotta say that the performance tonight makes me even more impressed with Self than I already was
We don’t have a ton more talent than Pitt St, but we are killing them despite not playing our best game and despite fielding a lineup that doesn’t play together much in practice.
He might be the best coach in the country.
Not sure I'd agree with the talent thing.
Releford and Teahan are likely All Americans at a D2 school.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
Rock Chalk Talk
I don't think players of their caliber who transfer to D2 end up becoming all-americans
We definitely had more talent than them and it seemed our guys had played together longer, but it didn’t seem to me to be a particularly wide gulf. Except for Withey’s size, if those guys had been playing an intramural game, I’d have been hard-pressed to pick out which were the D-1 players and which were D-2.
Norm Roberts' kid looks like Sasha Kaun
but smaller
