How do you feel about the other Big 12 teams?
Through reading various comments on RCT, I've found that as KU fans we can basically agree that we don't like K-State and Missouri. But as for feelings on the other teams in the Big 12, there seem to be a lot of discrepancies. For some of us that stems from where we're from, where we live now, or perhaps where family members went to school. Sometimes, I think we just start liking or disliking certain teams for no reason in particular. Just as a matter of curiosity (and boredom), I thought I'd see how people rank the teams in the Big 12 in terms of rooting interest. I guess that's sort of like asking people to rank their favorite respiratory diseases, but I'm interested to see who the most liked and most hated (outside of the obvious two) are. My list after the jump...
1) KU - Obviously. It's where I went to school, and I grew up in the KC area, making them an easy team to follow as a kid.
2) Nebraska - I know this is not a popular one, but my entire freaking family on both sides is full of NU fans/alums. I even have a relative who works in the Athletic Department. The Huskers were actually my favorite team for about the first 12 or so years of my life.
3) Oklahoma State - I have no reason for liking OSU, but for some reason I've always kind of rooted for them. I think as a kid I thought the black and orange uniforms were cool. Whatever the reason, I usually root for them as long as it wouldn't hurt KU.
4) Texas A&M - I like that they have a Jayhawk coaching their basketball team, and their football stadium when full is an incredible atmosphere.
5) Texas Tech - I always kinda liked Mike Leach, and was disappointed to see the Pirate go. They strike me as kind of an "off the beaten path" type of place, which I kinda like as well.
6) Colorado - When I was a kid they were a really good football team, so I got to watch them a lot. They've also been so terrible at basketball, there's sort of a "root for the little guy" factor involved here too.
7) Baylor - At one time, Baylor would have been higher on this list, but I don't like Scott Drew, and their basketball team last year really ruined their "root for the little guy" factor. I did think it was neat to see their football team make a bowl game this year though.
8) Iowa State - Now we're getting into the teams I don't have much positive to say about. Their fans tend to be a little overboard, despite not having much to hang their hat on. I don't know why exactly, just always had negative feelings toward ISU.
9) Oklahoma - Growing up in a Nebraska household, there was never much shot of me becoming an OU fan. The "boomer Sooner" chant is obnoxious.
10) Texas - Texas just stands for everything I hate. They joined the Big 8 teams after their conference fell apart, and immediately started throwing their weight around. I also hate that KU and the rest of the Big 12 is so financially dependent on them. Screw Texas.
11) Kansas State - I really hate K-State, just slightly less than MU. The color purple makes me sick. Their fans have an irrational obsession with us, to the point where they seem to root harder against us than they do for their own team. K-State is pathetic.
Dead last) Missouri - Mizzou is such a waste of my time, I'm not even going to type anything about them.
Anybody else have any teams they are sympathetic to? Or have any irrational hatred toward?

I'm a tad sympathetic...
toward most of the old Big 8 minus Missouri and K-State. I’m indifferent on Colorado and Nebraska I suppose so maybe it’s more just Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Iowa State.
Those three schools aren’t at the top of the pecking order anymore but they’re have been some memorable players and moments over the years where I have enjoyed watching those teams, the coaches and the players very much.
Questions, Comments? email me at denverjhawk@hotmail.com
I'm no fan of K-State or Mizzou,
but frankly, Nebraska is dead to me after this whole conference re-alignment thing. REALLY ticks me off. Will be a while before I get over it, I think.
When is Late Night?
Okie State would be my #1 non-Kansas team in the Big 12.
That would have been true before today. Not sure why but I’ve always liked watching them, especially their home games. The rest of the teams get a “meh” from me. Though Mizzou is ahead of K-State on my list. I understand the root for Kansas teams and the when they’re good, it’s better for the rivalry thing but I just can’t do it. I don’t like their style. I don’t like their players. I don’t like the vast majority of their fans.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball...Rock Chalk Talk
My list
- KU- no need for explanation
- Okie State- well my stepdad went there and I don’t know, just don’t hate em.
- KState- well I’m goin to get shunned for this, but I like seeing Kansas teams do good. It brings good attention to the state.
- Iowa State- Big 8 teams, so got to respect that
- Baylor-how can you hate the traditional kicking stone of the Big 12 in everything…yes they’ve gotten better though
- Texas A&M- rival of Texas, so why not?
- Texas Tech- never really done anything to make me mad or like em
- Texas- why would I cheer for the girlfriends team?
- OU- I hate OU. Way to many bandwagon OU fans around Wichita. But atleast they are still Big 12(-2)
- Colorado- the first team that tried to screw us over. But the hippies still aren’t Nebraska.
- Nebraska- Hmmm…the team that almost destroyed the best conference in the nation.
- Mizzou- those #~+ -/("; $&%# +$&&%…Ok I don’t think I have to explain much on this. I feel KState as a lil brother rivalry and Mizzou a rivalry with the guy that tried but failed to steal my girl from me. Hell they can’t even spell their own school name
My list is very similar
I’ve always like Iowa State a bit because one of my best friends growing up went there, and he always pulled for KU so I kinda pulled for ISU in school.
Also, I thought about going to Tejas, and while I understand the anti-Tejas sentiment, I kinda like the horns. I respect them as a really good academic school and they’ve been real good in football and basketball the last ten years. Plus most of their fans have been respectful to me, as in a “hey your basketball program rocks.” I like them a lot more than, say, Oklahoma.
Dealing with KSU fans all the time, they are just too overboard. I have some real good friends who went there and they are mostly normal, but a lot of people at my office are just so “OMG KU” its weird. Like if KSU loses I’ll just be like “tough loss man.” If KU loses they are doing freaking cartwheels. Had the salute call gone against KU in a bowl game, it would have been a great call and KSU fans would be drunk in celebration.
Missouri – too much slime there at times. Just too many “I’m from Blue Springs and I’m unedjukated but I LOVE MISSOURI” people I meet. Mizzou is interesting. I get along with and have a friendly rivalry with people who actually WENT to Mizzou. Its the in-state diehard fans who didn’t even attend the school who I can’t take. Theys crazy!
Nebraska fans are too arrogant. Like oh hey were the shit but you got Turner Gill…he might get your program to start winning 6 games a year. I’m really pulling for it! Smug, arrogant types. Enjoy the Big 10.
Colorado… couldn’t care less.
OU – hate their fans. The holding up a finger crap before kickoff, the boomer sooner and the fight song after every play… annoying.
Baylor… yeah…
Texas Tech- worthless. Although I loved Leach. Now though… who cares?
TAMU – Good basketball program that came from the ashes under Gillespe and now Turgeon the Surgeon. Don’t mind the aggies, but the shots of guys in uniform 90 times a game gets old…
Okie State… don’t really care. Their mascot is funny. The T. Boone thing is kinda nutts though
Shit happens when you win championships
KU – Obvious
UT – I grew up in Texas. Austin is Lawrence on steroids but with good weather. They are a top tier academic school. They also kept the conference together.
OSU – My best friend from HS goes to OSU, so it’s a mutual cheer for each others’ school type of deal. I’ve also been to Stillwater, and while it’s not a great city or anything, I’ve always had a great time.
Baylor – I always enjoyed their baseball program and don’t mind their fans. Good school. Unfortunate that they have to live in Waco though.
aTm – The Aggies were the butt of many jokes growing up much in the way of blondes. I have some good friends there and they do have some kick ass traditions. Kyle Field is something else entirely. The entire stadium will sway and people don’t sit down.
Everyone else, I don’t really care about. Didn’t grow up following them so I don’t bother to follow them now. I will say that it’s really unfortunate to live in either Manhattan or Lubbock. Those are two miserable and desolate towns. I mean, Waco isn’t great, but those two places make Waco look like Lawrence. I would semi-cheer for Nebraska while I was dating a girl who’s entire family was filled with NU grads, especially when I would visit for holidays and such. Then we broke up and they joined the Big Ten.
Good post
I had no idea KU fans hated OU so much. Well I’m here to tell you, at least for this OU fan, the hate is very much mutual. I’m an OU fan stuck in KS and the overwhelming majority of KU fans I come across are beyond obnoxious. If you think OU has a bunch of bandwagon fans, well then I’m not sure there is a word for all the “t-shirt fans” here in KS. Waving the wheat is stupid, building your campus on top of a hill and making everyone walk uphill to class every day is retarded, and Boomer Sooner beats the hell out of Rock Chalk Jayhawk every day of the week! Ahhhh, now I feel better.
1. OU – duh
2. Mizzou – why not stick with the hate theme of my post
3. A&M – never really had an issue w/ the Aggies in any sport
4. Iowa State – tend to agree w/ the author in that ISU fans are over the top but also harmless
5. Nebraska – if it’s not football, who cares. They clearly don’t
6. Colorado – meh
7. K-State – never bought in to the whole Frank Martin deal. They lose almost every big game they’re in
8. Baylor – again agree w/ the author, not a fan of their coach
9. Tech – most OU fans really hate Bob Knight and that’s reason enough
10. KU – living in KS makes this really easy
11. OSU – little brother always wanting respect they never deserve
15. texass – it’s in my blood

Obnoxious and you spell Texas "texass"?
I’ve never understood all of that.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

Though I guess that's pretty similar to the "Misery" you'll see around here from time to time.

Yup. It's just a hate thing. I'll admit it's stupid, but then again so is texass ;)

Wow
“the overwhelming majority of KU fans I come across are beyond obnoxious”
And the pot calling the kettle black award for January goes to…
I think every fan base has obnoxious fans. Except Texas Tech and Baylor, because no one cares about their teams, including their fans/alumni (just my own experience sorry).

Aye, there are A-holes everywhere
But most people you’ll find just don’t give two shits about Baylor or TTech. They don’t have a rivalry with anyone, and aren’t that relevant in sports (save a few good seasons here and there like Baylor in hoops last year, Tech in football three years ago, but every school has those).
Ask a KSU fan how they feel about KU and they will probably start sweating due to their rage. Even just ask someone about Nebraska and people will be like “I hate those league-hopping dicks.”
Baylor and Tech… meh. meh meh meh meh meh. Meh x 1,000

Yeah, you're right. They don't get under too many people's skin.
Although Scott Drew is trying to change that, i think.
It’s pretty interesting to see how much KSU is hated since they’re pretty shitty when it comes to sports and it really doesn’t have a rivalry with anyone.(KU is just proximity, imo)

I'm just telling you what I experience here living in KS
I’m certainly not saying that OU doesn’t have more than their fair share of obnoxious fans as well. I guess what bugs me is that the fans I mention believe, or at a minimum give a strong impression, that KU basketball is above reproach and are unaware that any other sports are played in Lawrence. Again, OU has football fans that are very similar I’m just not one of them so it annoys me.
If nothing else I learned that KU fans don’t really like OU and that just makes our games in all sports more fun for me to watch. Hopefully we’ll win more than our fair share, but I’m quite confident that won’t be happening on the basketball court this year (or any time soon for that matter unfortunately).

See the whole "arrogant KU bball fans" thing gets me
Because KU fans are allowed to be (to some extent). Look, I know it sounds arrogant, but we’ve won the league six strait years (think about that. In any sport. Its absolutely unheard of) and we won a national title recently (just awesome). Other fans go nuts about KU fans bragging about their basketball program, but our team backs it up.
My overall view: If you wanna shut us up, beat us.
I think KState and other fans who brag and talk shit despite having no recent hardware are worse. A lot of wildcat fans gave me a lot of shit for our early tournament exit last year and they being picked to win the league. Just laughable when we have 38 of the last 40 against them (or whatever it is).
Point is, I think KU fans in basketball and Texas/OU football fans have earned a right to be a little cocky about their programs. Obnoxious or not, its the truth.

Most fans are arrogant though
Unless you’re a fan of a basement-dwelling program that has started to laugh at itself over the years (lookin’ at you, Royals fans), you’re going to be arrogant about your team. If you didn’t hold your team in higher regard than others, you wouldn’t be a fan of them.
The only difference is KU (or OU or Texas in football) is good enough that their fans have a lot of opportunities to make it known how they feel. Colorado fans would be viewed the same way if they ever did anything that gave them the opportunity to run their mouths. Same with ISU. No one likes the fans of the teams they envy.

I still owe money for degrees at both KU and OkState
Seems like that should make them my least favorite, but of course it doesn’t.
Traditional rivals for both are at the bottom – Missouri, K-State, OU, Texas, sort of Nebraska.
Everyone else is just sort of there – I like it when KU/OSU beats ’em, and I like it when they beat the hateds.
