Big 12 Saturday Open Game Thread

Big12_medium

The Big 12 schedule kicks into gear today with five games featuring ten of the conference teams going head to head.  Kansas and Texas will kick things off a little late, but Texas does play a top 10 Connecticut team in the process.

Here's your landing spot to talk hoops and of course the NFL Playoffs do get going today and the BBVA Compass Bowl with Kentucky against Pitt.  Plenty of good sports on the docket for a cold(maybe) January Saturday.

I'll get things started here

Oklahoma State will beat K-State in Stillwater and jump into the Top 25. Boom.

I feel like either K-state really misses having curtis kelly in this one against marshall moses and matt pilgrim

Or the world is introduced to a new wally judge. I’m hoping for the later to make things interesting in the Big XII this year, but we’ll see.

I never root for a K-State win, unless it helps us in some way. Go Okie State

agree with you...

I kinda have a soft spot Okie State. Maybe it’s cause my stepdad went there and isn’t a fan that takes it too far like kstate fans.

by hawkinwihita on Jan 8, 2011 12:33 PM CST up reply actions

Meh

Besides the fact that I grew up in Manhattan, I like seeing KSU do well because it makes it that much sweeter when we beat them. The weeks of hype between fanbases…the endless assurances from friends back home that we will go down…witnessing their inevitable disappointment…for everything else there’s mastercard.
Take last year. “We made it to the Elite Eight!” “Northern Iowa!”
Response: “Who beat you thrice?”

Whoops...As if Bill Self needed extra bulletin board material.
“I feel like everything’s got to come through Manhattan this year,” Pullen said on Thursday. "I feel like we have to play at Allen Fieldhouse and that’s going to be a big game for us and we still have to go to Texas and Texas A&M — two good games — but we’ve got a lot of teams coming here, too.

“So I feel like it’s our league to lose.”

I'm not sure Frank Martin will like that...

It was Martin that basically said the road to the title goes through Lawrence until proven otherwise.

I’m wondering about this statement though, is it cockiness or confidence. Because there is a difference.

by hawkinwihita on Jan 8, 2011 12:15 PM CST up reply actions

Personally...

I think it’s a false confidence. I think there have been so many questions and doubts about K-State since things started to go south that perhaps he’s trying to convince himself and his team that nothing has changed. Who knows though, they have been playing better again since UNLV albeit against weaker competition.

Nice little jump by Okie State to get a steal and then miss a quick 3 to throw it away.

Would’ve been huge if it went in, so I guess not a terrible shot. But nobody around to rebound and it was either a make or a turnover on the miss.

Is it just me

or does Jacob Pullen seem completely different this year? In the past he’s always struck me as kind of an easy-going “aw shucks” sort of kid. This year he seems to shoot his mouth off a lot, and has this arrogant swagger about him on the court. I guess preseason All-American will do that to you.

by PenguinHawk on Jan 8, 2011 1:49 PM CST reply actions

He was always like that

His cockiness is often his primary attribute, just like it was for Collins

From Rush The Court Big 12 Preview....
Colorado is the fourth team in the North making waves, as the balance of power has shifted in the Big 12. Alec Burks and Cory Higgins make up one of the most dangerous duos and the Buffs could be in a position to make a run at an NCAA Tournament berth for the first time since 2003.

Calling Colorado a conference contender might be a stretch, but the Buffaloes will surprise some people.

November 4th…yours truly…

of course now that we’ve all gushed over them, they’re likely to faceplant.

After watching K-State a few years with Martin at the helm

I think Frank needs to figure out how to harness his anger/energy. It’s infectious to his team and not always in a good way. His players seem to think it’s ok to lose their cool too often.

Mizzou...

just acts like they don’t even know what to do in a half court offense. Like they don’t even practice it.

Not that I was all that far out on a limb with this

but I’d like to refer everyone to the first comment at the top of the page

by PenguinHawk on Jan 8, 2011 2:28 PM CST reply actions

All Mizzou's game seem to be close

and they’ve won all but one of them. I have a bad feeling about this.

by PenguinHawk on Jan 8, 2011 2:33 PM CST reply actions

Semi-miracle 3 by CU helps.

Though they immediately let MU score again.

by hunter s. royal on Jan 8, 2011 2:34 PM CST up reply actions

they've definitely been there before.

MU gets a technical...

that was a pretty touchy call I’d say.

awful call

how is that a T?

I always drink the Kool-Aid

by bt01 on Jan 8, 2011 2:39 PM CST up reply actions

Disagree.

Flipping the ball at a ref like that will get a T a lot.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

That's a T on you boy!

by hunter s. royal on Jan 8, 2011 2:41 PM CST up reply actions

My first,

unless you count intramurals in college. Picked up a couple then. I was a bit more competitive then than I am now.

When is Late Night?

by Bensa on Jan 8, 2011 2:43 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, I'll side with the ref most of the time.

But making a face and flipping the ball at an official like that is asking for it. If he’d have dropped it, we wouldn’t have seen the T.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

by Warden11 on Jan 8, 2011 2:42 PM CST up reply actions

We need Warden's decision on this.

Not much, but he did flip the ball toward a ref.

by hunter s. royal on Jan 8, 2011 2:40 PM CST up reply actions

I think

it was likely a combination of whatever he said before the flip, and the flip itself

by PenguinHawk on Jan 8, 2011 2:42 PM CST up reply actions

MU and KU missed on Burks...

but I don’t think anyone saw him turning into this type of player.

Questions, Comments? email me at denverjhawk@hotmail.com

by Owen on Jan 8, 2011 2:41 PM CST reply actions

He committed to CU very early,

then grew several inches and his game picked up as a senior.

by hunter s. royal on Jan 8, 2011 2:42 PM CST up reply actions

Don't forget

that a lot of our players (probably most) would be any other team’s top player. Burks could have fit in here, but he’d be a role player or fringe starter. But that’s more the system than anything, I think.

All that said, as I mentioned above, Burks is really good.

Just noticed your comment.

Great minds…or something.

When is Late Night?

by Bensa on Jan 8, 2011 2:46 PM CST up reply actions

Yours might be a great mind...

I just get lucky and come up with a decent idea every once and a while.

by hawkinwihita on Jan 8, 2011 2:51 PM CST up reply actions

I'm not trying to take anything away from him but...

If he played for KU, his numbers would go way down. He wouldn’t need to do what he does for CU.

by hawkinwihita on Jan 8, 2011 2:43 PM CST up reply actions

I hate Dick Vitale...

One of the worst announcers out there.

by hawkinwihita on Jan 8, 2011 2:58 PM CST reply actions

The worst.

There isn’t a single other announcer that actually makes me question if I want to watch the game.

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 8, 2011 3:04 PM CST up reply actions

VERY TRUE...

I switched from the Texas/UConn game to A&M/OU so I didn’t have to listen to him. OU is terrible so far though. Might have to put up with Vitale today.

by hawkinwihita on Jan 8, 2011 3:08 PM CST up reply actions

Anyone think Georgia has a chance of beating Kentucky today?

I realize most here probably don’t hate Kentucky as much as I do and therefore probably don’t pay attention to them, but Georgia has been flying under the radar and is pretty good, and they get UK at home today.

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 8, 2011 3:06 PM CST reply actions

I'm starting to hate Texas more now...

My new girlfriend is originally from Texas and a big longhorns fan.

Wichita...

I was on the Koolaide when I made my account.

by hawkinwihita on Jan 8, 2011 3:25 PM CST reply actions

Don't know where your from...

But Wichita sucks. The celebrate mediocre basketball way too much. Last nightme and some buddies went out to watch the Cotton Bowl, they wouldn’t switch any TV’s that we could see off the WSU game. Expected yes, but when no one is watching the WSU game and we asked for 1 of 30 TV’s, it’s BS when we didn’t get it.

by hawkinwihita on Jan 8, 2011 3:37 PM CST up reply actions

I'm from Kansas

So I already knew how much Wichita sucks :)

Nice job Hamilton.

Have a chance to put Texas ahead AND MISS THE EFFING DUNK!

Anyone...

else watching the Saints-Seahawks game?

Way more competitive than I expected.

Question is who do we have to sacrifice to the sports gods tomorrow, the chiefs or the jayhawks?

well nothing quite motivates teams like a loss

And who knows when we’ll see the chiefs in the playoffs again. That being said, I want to go undefeated in non con play

I want the Chiefs to win

For the sake of a win, and also because i do NOT want them to set the record for most consecutive playoff losses

Gonna be a crazy conference season

Wonder if KSU isn’t a “gonna wake up” team. They just might not be that good… I dunno. Keep waiting for that team to get it going but they just don’t

We'll probably find out

once they’ve played a few games with Curtis Kelly back. If they don’t have “it” by then, they probably aren’t going to.

OK question for everyone...

What’s the biggest upset basketball today? 7 ranked teams lost to unranked teams.

by hawkinwihita on Jan 8, 2011 7:04 PM CST via mobile reply actions

well...

I admittedly know nothing about Georgia, but them beating UK certainly surprised me, though I guess Georgia is 12-2 now, so they’re not terrible. I’d say Penn State over Michigan State is the biggest. PSU lost 5 times in the non-con, and can anyone remember the last time they made the Tourney? I think as the season goes on Mizzou and K-State’s losses may be vindicated, to some extent. I don’t see that happening for Michigan State.

by PenguinHawk on Jan 8, 2011 7:10 PM CST up reply actions

i agree about Penn State...

They did come out of no where. Thing is though, this was your typical upset score, 66-62. I thought KState could lose to Okie State, but didn’t expect the way they did. Same to be said about Colorado and Mizzou. But Penn State would probably be my #1 also.

by hawkinwihita on Jan 8, 2011 7:17 PM CST up reply actions

I agree with you in the MU-CU game

but I thought K-State looked like the better team for the majority of their game. Then OSU got hot when it mattered and K-State had no counterpunch. In the end I felt like the K-State game was a little closer than the score indicated.

by PenguinHawk on Jan 8, 2011 7:35 PM CST up reply actions

very true...

Plus almost every player fouling out hurt them in the end
