Brock Berglund Officially Signs With Kansas
In the old but good to be official news category, Kansas has announced the singing of Brock Berglund to a financial aid agreement and Turner Gill has confirmed that he will be on campus and enrolled this Spring.
Thus begins a three way quarterback competition for next fall. If he had to say today, Gill probably goes with Jordan Webb. But it's clear that Berglund is a player that they see a bright future in, and perhaps a future that could begin as soon as next fall.
Gill on Berglund via KUAthletics
"Brock is the ideal student-athlete we want in our program, he has proven that he is a winner. He not only has great football skills, but he possess great vision and tremendous leadership abilities."
More from the KUAD Press Release
This past season he(Berglund) led Valor Christian to the 4A state title as he completed 140 of 229 passes (61.1 percent) for 2,150 yards and 23 touchdowns with just five interceptions. He also rushed 130 times for 952 yards and nine scores. In the state title game victory he threw for 280 yards and ran for 122 more.As a junior, Berglund was 109 of 184 (59.2 percent) for 2,226 yards and 30 touchdowns with just four interceptions. He ran for 890 yards and 14 touchdowns on 116 carries. Valor Christian went a perfect 14-0 en route to the 3A state championship.

For some reason I had a bad feeling we were going to have the carpet pulled out from under us with Brock. Don’t know why, it just seemed too good to be true when he switched his commitment after the Stoudt drama. Glad he’s signed, sealed and delivered!
He'll start
Barring injury (or maybe because of injury) Brock will start at least one game next season.
Book it.
I love fearless predictions!
build a damn football program, beat some ass, and get on tv more.
I think he'll win the job outright in camp
Clearly, Gill and Chuck “third and” Long want a QB who is a rushing threat, as evidence by going with Pick last year. Bergie is the only QB on the roster who is a rushing threat.
Given the success Flat Top and our ground game had this year as well as the zone-read, I think Bergalicious wins the job in camp with this running ability, and the fact that Webb isn’t good.

As evidenced by last year
I don’t really know what the hell Gill and Long want.

they want fine young men who possess not only strong football skills, but valuable leadership tools and the ability to set a positive example as role models (from that standpoint)

I thought it was here at RCT
that I read an account of Gill wanting the better passer (Webb) while Long wanted the better runner (Pick). Gill relented initially, but sort of explains the quick and fairly definitive hook.
Ultimately, I think they both want a mobile QB that can throw – BB or Cummings, but had to choose between halves last year tho Jordan did run fairly well. The question now becomes can he look off receivers, work thru progressions, and throw a deep ball with some semblance of accuracy?
Those questions might be irrelevant if Brock can, and can also execute a read-option O as well. It is indeed nice that He and Darrian (as well as Dylan) and on campus for Spring ball.
Don't forget that BB Gun ran Long's offense (IIRC) in high school
Gives him a leg up

About Great Expectations
B-Squared seems like a better version of Todd Reesing.
Better size. Better arm. Better mobility.
Not to take anything away from the greatest Jayhawk quarterback in over a decade, but I feel like Brock brings a whole lot more to the table…. not the least of which is an extra year to impact the team.
I feel like Turner has found his guy. He and Chuck Long are going to mold Brock and our stable of running backs. As long as we have an improved line, our offense should be MUCH improved in the years to come.
Not to mention our absolute beast of a d-line

can't put anyone in Todd Reesing's category...
until they do it on the field. #5 was something else.

understood.
the hyperbole was a little much, i admit.
i’m just looking at what he brings to the table.
i am perennially in a wait-and-see mode, but this one has me more excited than usual

yes...
from a measurables standpoing, Beglund is one of the better QB’s that we’ve had at Kansas in a while. High ceiling player that could do immense amount of good for the coach Gill era at Kansas.

I don't remember specifics...
but it seems like he pretty much fits the recruiting profile of Kerry Meier, when he came out of HS.

Kerry
could never break the “stare down your receiver” habit.
Let’s hope Brock doesn’t have that problem. You can get away with it in high school, but not beyond.
build a damn football program, beat some ass, and get on tv more.
very similar...
Meier was a step slower and probably not as good as a thrower.
If you go back and watch Meier run even in HS he was very decisive but more someone who lowered his shoulder into a tackle to finish a run wheras Berglund shows more of an elusive style I’d say.
I guess I’d tend to think that Meier was a great athlete who was put at QB as a result while with Berglund I think he’s a QB who happens to be a pretty good athlete. Fact is Berglund rushed for 900+ yards this season and he wasn’t even the talk of his team, that title went to Ed McCaffrey’s son who is a freshman on the team and exploded this year in Denver. Apparently the kid has a serious future in football.
Still there are some in Colorado who have commented that Berglund would make a great wideout(Meieresque) so you never know what will happen. I just hope he can be the answer we are looking for at QB.

So is what you're saying ...
BB is a better passer and runner?
better passer, different style of runner.

Meier had a 48% completion rate in HS.
Which I never knew. That’s awful. That should have always kept our expectations in check there. At least BB is above 60%, which means he’s similar to Webb.

Truth
This guy could be a total bust.
Or he could be another Josh Freeman….bad in college, but having the right “measurables” to make the league.
Or he could be the next Drew Brees (but taller).
build a damn football program, beat some ass, and get on tv more.
It's not nice to tease with the Drew Brees talk
especially since you can sit so smuggly basking in the flat top after glow.
Rivet you are smoking dope
if you think Freeman was a bad college QB. He might have had a bad team around him, but he was pretty good.
It's not that I'm lazy; it's that I just don't care. (#739)
As a junior
He threw for 3000 yards, had a ~60% completion %, 20TD to 8 int, 14 Rushing TDs with 400 yards.
Not bad!
It's not that I'm lazy; it's that I just don't care. (#739)
But over his career
His TD:int ratio was 44:34, with a 58% completion rate. Considering they were running the spread at the time, those numbers are very pedestrian. Conversely, in Todd Teesing’s 3 years as a starter, he completed 63% of his passes with an 87:30 TD ratio. He also ran for about 3 times as many yards. Yes, some of that is due to the receivers, but if you watched much of Freeman in college, you know a lot of it was also due to accuracy and decision-making issues.
by PenguinHawk on Jan 4, 2011 5:08 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
Obviously I wasn't arguing he was better than Reesing
Who by the way was the best QB in KU history? I was simply pointing out that calling Freeman “bad” is delusional.
It's not that I'm lazy; it's that I just don't care. (#739)
Reesing or Hadl
I had a spirited debate over someone over this on here. I said Reesing because he was a true QB true and true and won a BCS game, someone else said Hadl because he was more “legendary”
Shit happens when you win championships
Hard to debate different era QB's...
I’m not goin to debate either way, but Hadl was a true QB though. He wouldn’t of lead the AFL in passing for 2 seasons if he wasn’t. Also Hadl won the Bluebonnet Bowl for KU in 61. Back then, goin to a bowl meant something also. That was KU’s first bowl victory and only one til the 90’s.
by hawkinwihita on Jan 4, 2011 9:43 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
Hadl played well in the NFL
But I was pointing at his college stats, mostly real deadly rushing, average passing stats.
I still have a bit of a disdain looking at Hadl because in the 70s the Packers traded for him in what was the worst deal in the history of professional sports
Shit happens when you win championships
Like I said though...
Hard to debate different era QB’s. That’s why I didn’t want to get into that. Back in the late 50’s early 60’s colleges ran the ball, not pass it. If you would flip the stories, there probably wouldn’t be a debate. Hadl, I think would strive in opportunities Reesing had.

Yeah it started when I made my all-time KU football lineup

Hmmm...
On an all-time roster, I’d probably start Reesing at QB too, assuming he could take a snap from under center lol. I can’t remember him ever doin that. But I’d also have a split backfield rather then an I. Hadl and the Comet would be my running backs. That would be a hell of a backfield.
Now, I would have to say this though, if you were debating best football player at KU rather then QB, I’d have to give it to Hadl. He was by far the superior athlete. He excelled as a DB also with being a damn good punter.
by hawkinwihita on Jan 4, 2011 10:29 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
Oh and about the Packers...
That’s their own fault, and you shouldn’t blame Hadl. They took a risk on a QB that had already played 10+ seasons in the AFL/NFL and got beat out by a younger QB. To me that just sounds like trouble.
by hawkinwihita on Jan 4, 2011 10:21 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
Oh I don't blame Hadl at all
Still … such a terrible trade. Very Packerish for that era. A first, second and third round pick in one draft, then a first and third in another… for a guy who threw like 5 TDs and 20-something INTs. Unbelievable
Shit happens when you win championships
All I can go by is what I saw in person
And I only watched him against the Jayhawks. And he was BAD against his in-state rival.
build a damn football program, beat some ass, and get on tv more.
Rec'd
Here’s what Reesing did that none of the current guys can even sniff:
Ranked first in the state of Texas by completing 72.3 percent of his pass attempts as a senior.(emphasis mine)
Until we see otherwise, BB is just Meier with a better supporting cast and a more accurate arm (not that that’s a bad thing, it’s just not any reason to expect Reesing 2).

Actually BB doesn't remind me of Reesing so much
as he reminds me of Kerry Meier when he was our defacto QB of the future. Mobile guy who can do some damage with his leg and arm.
Shit happens when you win championships
He needs to start
Brock I think is right now our best QB. Webb doesn’t have the skills needed to win games. Brock also is better than Matthews who I assume will redshirt. Also slight problem here who is he going to throw the ball to. Patterson is back but who else DJ?
76-1 my record when i'm at KU basketball games.
The only receiving option we lost was J. Wilson. I think you’re referring to Cummings for the redshirt since Matthews already has and has also moved to wideout, but he is someone that has drawn a lot of praise over the past offseason. I’d say an offensive line is the most critical component at this point. Give a QB time and balance that with a running game and the receivers will find openings.

Daymond will be the primary WR
as he was this year, but there are lots of young guns around him. They need a bit more time to develop, as many frosh and sophs do.
It's all good.
Rumor has it that Denard Robinson and Tate Forcier are looking at us as transfer options now that RichRod is out at Michigan. We recruited Forcier heavily out of high school, and coming to a BCS school with more reasonable expectations (going to a New Years Day bowl doesn’t et you another year? Really?) seems like the perfect fit.
If it weren’t for Turner Gill’s Contract of Steel, maybe we could have gotten two of the three in a package deal.
Anyways, Berglund would be greatly helped competing against either of those two in practice every day.
by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Jan 4, 2011 10:26 PM CST reply actions
Does that have any basis in WR coach Drew
being rumored as a possibility as well?
I wonder if many other players would come along?
hmmmm
i can’t substantiate any of these.
although there are a few places that are mentioning a possible robinson transfer this article from Bleacher Report,a bastion of journalistic integrity
this one from gather.com … i’ve never heard of the site before
this article by erick smith at usa today is probably the most credible, but it doesn’t say anything more than the others
news of robinson and/or forcier coming to kansas would be frontpage espn-type stuff.
no idea where you heard this. i’m not saying it’s not true, but im just the least bit skeptical

Not a lot of truths coming from Ann Arbor this week
given that the RichRod firing stories were quickly shut down yesterday. I don’t like Forcier’s attitude – reminds me of Mitch Mustain. Not a team player.
Damn...that'd be sick if we got Forcier
Although would one of them have to sit out a year?
Shit happens when you win championships
He'd fail here
Forcier the type of player that wants some of the spotlight. You know, stuff like his name on the back of his jersey. We’re not that type of team. We’re a team team. No “i” in team type of team. I don’t think Forcier would enjoy that environment.

If he is our QB one year and helps us win more than 3 games I’m ok with it.
