Kansas Names Sheahon Zenger Director of Athletics
LAWRENCE, Kan. - University of Kansas Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little today named Kansas native and KU graduate Sheahon (pronounced SHAY-un) Zenger the next director of athletics. Currently athletics director at Illinois State University, Zenger achieved multi-sport success and set academic records.
Zenger will be officially introduced at a news conference at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 3, in Hadl Auditorium at KU's Wagnon-Parrott Athletic Center. He will start at KU Feb. 1.
"With his experience and leadership skills, Sheahon Zenger is the best choice to lead Kansas Athletics into the future. He is exactly who we need as athletics director, working to ensure that every Jayhawk team succeeds on the field and in the classroom, as well as making sure our programs operate with the utmost integrity," said Gray-Little.
Zenger recently led Illinois State to its second Missouri Valley Conference All-Sports Trophy in three years. The Redbirds led the league with seven conference titles during the 2009-10 season and 17 teams advanced to post-season play during his tenure.
More on Zenger and statements from both Bill Self and Turner Gill on the hire inside:
A native of Hays, Zenger earned a doctorate at KU. He has experience not only as an administrator, but as an educator, fundraiser and football coach.
The last three years saw Illinois State teams notch 16 top-five conference finishes in its 17 Valley sports, which is the highest percentage of top-five finishers in league history. Under Zenger's leadership, Illinois State student-athletes have achieved record-high grade-point averages in each of the last four years, while the department saw an 65 percent increase in scholarship fund members.
The school also negotiated a new five-year apparel contract with Nike and completed capital projects including the completion of a $3.5 million baseball stadium.
Zenger coached football at Drake University, Kansas State University, the University of South Florida and the University of Wyoming. Before becoming AD at Illinois State, Zenger held a number of top fundraising positions at Kansas State University in the athletic department and the College of Business Administration.
"My earliest memories are in Lawrence, Kansas, watching KU football and basketball games," Zenger said. "Sometimes in life things come full circle. The opportunity to stand side-by-side with KU's student-athletes, coaches, administrators, donors and fans gives me great joy."
"The history, tradition and excellence at KU are truly special. I thank Chancellor Gray-Little for her sincerity and graciousness in this process, and I thank President Bowman and Illinois State University for six of the best years of my life. I am fully expecting the same experience at KU," he continued.
Zenger emerged as a finalist in a search process led by search committee chair Ray Evans. Evans said the committee placed high value on integrity, experience in hiring successful football and basketball coaches, ties with athletics directors at other BCS schools, and a demonstrated level of fundraising success, among other qualities.
"We're elated to find someone of Sheahon's caliber to be the AD at KU. He has a passion for helping student-athletes succeed and has great ties to Kansas and KU. Sheahon is someone who has already accomplished so much and we know he will lead the Jayhawks to the next level of success," said Evans.
Sean Lester will continue his service as interim athletics director until Zenger's start date.
Zenger is married to the former Pam McAnarney. The couple has three children: Luke, Abby and Jake. He received a bachelor's degree in English and secondary education and a master's degree in journalism and mass communication from Kansas State.
He earned a doctorate in educational policy and leadership from KU in 1996 and during his graduate studies provided communications and special projects assistance to KU's office of the executive vice chancellor.
What others are saying about the selection of Sheahon Zenger to lead Kansas Athletics
Men's Basketball Coach Bill Self
"I'm very excited about Sheahon's appointment. I don't know him well personally, but (former KU assistant basketball coach and current ISU head basketball coach) Tim Jankovich has told me what a high-quality person and athletics director he is. I know he has a ton of energy, which is important as he leads us at this time of so much opportunity."
Football Coach Turner Gill
"From the beginning I have trusted the Chancellor and the search committee to find someone who is the right fit for KU. I support and am excited about the choice they've made. I have heard very positive things about Sheahon, and I look forward to working with him."
Big 12 Conference Deputy Commissioner Tim Weiser
"I hired Sheahon as my associate AD for development for a variety of reasons and was not surprised when he quickly became AD at Illinois State and now at KU. He is a bright, passionate and above all, highly principled individual. He's someone who is personable and compassionate, but who also now has the experience as AD at Illinois State to be ready to make the hard decisions that come with the job.
"In visiting with those at KU involved in this hiring, and knowing what they were looking for, Sheahon was an immediate candidate in my mind. One of the single most important factors when hiring for a position like this is ‘fit.' Given his background at both KU and with the State of Kansas, there is no better fit for him than KU."

Wanted him since he was listed as a finalist several weeks ago. Like his football background and ties to the school and state.

He Spent A LOT of Time at KSU
Now when conference realignment comes around again, we won’t need to worry about whether or not the legislature will force us to stay with K-State.
I want to stay with K-State
and Mizzou – whether it’s in the Big 12 or any other league. Rivalries are important.

Would You Rather be With KSU in the WAC . . .
Or without KSU in the Big Ten, SEC, Pac 12, etc? I’m not saying that we would easily or definitely be able to land in one of these big conferences, but with our new AD it’s now basically impossible. IMHO, they might as well have hired Sam Brownback to be our new AD.
If the guy bled purple, he wouldn't take this job.
If there is some deal where KU gets offered to join the Big East (for example), I bet that gets tracked down whether or not KSU is involved.
I don’t see any reason to suppose that he won’t pursue what’s in KU’s best interest, independent of what’s in KSU’s best interest. He’s not the KSU AD
It's just not that easy to ignore
your life’s experiences when the majority of it has revolved around wearing purple.
If it was, then I’d be wearing burnt orange right now and be on suicide watch like the majority of the other Austinites. But instead I’m smiling and wearing crimson and blue and looking forward to Big 12 bball (something the burnt orange crowd doesn’t really acknowledge exists).
build a damn football program, beat some ass, and get on tv more.
They start following it around Feb. 1
especially if Barnes has the team contending for a league title. Then the focus shifts quickly to spring football and baseball.
from what I heard of his radio interview this morning
He seems to downplay the K-State ties. Part of that is just trying to appeal to the fanbase I’m sure, but it sounds like he actually grew up a KU fan and circumstance took him to KSU for his undergrad.

We learned in June that KU and KSU won't be separated
I just hope KU’s reputation and history helps it stay in a BCS league and drag the kitties along. I also think the superconference thing won’t happen as soon as the “experts” have been predicting.
Not when it puts us in the WAC or similar conference
Does anyone know if his name is pronounced Shawn ?
I don't like the KSU ties.
But other than that….we got what we could attract.
build a damn football program, beat some ass, and get on tv more.
He has KU ties as well.
But you aren’t the only person who has those concerns.

agreed...
but he did live in Lawrence when he was young and his dad taught at KU so he’s been around both. But without a doubt he has serious K-State ties.

And pre-mid-2000s, would you go to work for KU football as a career move?
In fact, I’d question his judgment if he had gone to KU over KSU as an aspiring coach.

In defense of KU...
KState football wasn’t a job you wanted either. In fact, KU might of been a lil better job at the time. KU KState had just gotten done playing the Toilet Bowl in ‘87 which ended in a tie. Next 3 games, KU won. A lot of people forget, prior to Snyder, KState had one of the worst football programs around. At the time, I’d have to say KU was a better job then KState. Not much but still better.

well, '89 was a bad year, but Snyder was already making progress by '90 and '91

I can't disagree with Snyders progress...
But he stated with KState football in 89, and I believe that was Snyder’s first year. But I was just trying to defend KU a lil.

Strangely, I know less about KU around that time than KSU
Selective memory, I guess. We’re probably both right ;)

A quick run down
89 was Snyder’s first year at KState. The 5 years prior to Snyder, KState only had 6 wins total (between 84-88). During the 87 and 88 seasons, KState didn’t even win a game. With KState’s only bowl game in the program up to that point being in 82.
Now to KU. The same time period. The 5 year span, KU had 16 wins. A 87 and 88 combined for only 2 wins. With KU having bowls in 47, 61, 68, 73, 75, and 81.
So as you can see neither team was any good at the time. The 87 meeting was named the Toilet Bowl because both teams were horrible. KU had 1 win goin into the game and KState was winless. Of course the game ended in a tied too.

Why only highlight the KSU ties?
A Ph.D. from KU has more heft than a bucket of KSU diplomas and jobs. If you didn’t learn that at KU then you weren’t attending class.
Rock Chalk, y'all,
Dr. J. Hawk
I Went to KU Pharmacy School with Several K-State Grads . . .
They ALL considered themselves K-State alumni who were attending graduate/professional school somewhere else.
Seems to be a go getter with resume checklist of what an AD should know.
I like he has a FB background.
We got ourselves a spy!
Just messin. I believe this guy was on KSU’s radar a couple years ago after the Krause debacle. Looks pretty solid to me.
know nothing about the man
but his cv sounds impressive and a good fit…don’t really care much about the ksu ties
BOOM YOSTED!

KU .....
…. is signing his paycheck. I believe if there is going to be more conference realignment that he will have our best interest. If he doesn’t and passes up an opportunity to get us into a better conference then he’ll get run out of town.
On a side note, I’ve never believed that any of the major conferences will ever go to 14 or 16 teams. It doesn’t make sense.

Agreed on both.
On a side note, I’ve never believed that any of the major conferences will ever go to 14 or 16 teams. It doesn’t make sense.
Texas schools don’t want to go west, they don’t want to go east. As long as they’re around with the Oklahoma schools, Kansas will be fine.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

Loyalty comes with the paycheck.
Last night my best friend and I worked as score keeper and timer for a game between the school we work for and my best friend’s alma mater. He still pulled for the school we work for, not his alma mater. No one is going to risk their integrity by undermining their current employer for a former employer. That’s just nuts…but then again so are half the posts on this board (about the same as any sports board.)
Rock Chalk, y'all,
Dr. J. Hawk
can you elaborate on that last part?
This is the least “nuts” sports site I’ve ever encountered.
