Lawrence PreGame, PostGame and Post-Post Game: Advice Needed!
Jayhawkers,
Myself along with a good number of other people will be coming to Lawrence for the game this weekend and I need suggestions for the following:
Pre-Game: This game we will not be tailgating so we need a good place for a proper buzz (OMG YELLOWJACKETS BUZZ!).
Post-Game Football Watching: Needed: football, food, beer
Late-Night: Where are the happening spots in town? We have money and we want to help your economy.
Many thanks

Guys I've sent Winfield...
a good number of suggestions, but the one I’m struggling with the most is the Post Game Football watching so let’s help the guy out. Plus suggestions for the other two “scenarios” would be great as well.
Besides, I imagine after we shock the world and win he’s going to need to drink to forget.
and no KUGrad…your house doesn’t count.

I live in OP now playa
Jokes on youuu! (I wish I still lived in Lawrence)
Shit happens when you win championships
My two cents...
Pre-game: Louise’s West (amirite Owen?). A bit off the beaten path but close enough to the stadium that you could drink a Bloody Mary or six and walk to the game. But most bars downtown should be open early, and there are shuttles that will take you from there to the stadium.
Post-game: There aren’t many sports bars downtown actually. Buffalo Wild Wings? I might suggest going to 23rd St Brewery, which is on the west side of town but they have good food, EXCELLENT beer, plenty of TVs, and might not be as crowded as downtown after the game.
Late-Night: Gotta be Mass St., my friend. Plenty to choose from. The more “bro”-y bars are probably Brother’s and Tonic. Hipster-ish bars would be The Replay (which just got named one of the top college bars in America, even though it’s not really a “college” bar) or the Taproom, which has great bartenders. Louise’s Downtown and Harbor lights will have a more casual atmosphere. Hell, just walk around and find something you like. I’m guessing the cover charges will be significantly cheaper than in the ATL.
Hope you enjoy it.
YES to LOUISE's...West of course...
especially for an 11am game, bloody mary’s are perfect for a pregame.

I used to think the same thing
until I moved to Austin and saw the girls in the skin tight Texas shirts, MINI skirts and cowboy boots.
Oh my what a sexy combo……..
build a damn football program, beat some ass, and get on tv more.
I'm sure the number of suggestions will pick up,
but if not, I vaguely remember some recent threads on the subject that they might find interesting, if anyone else can remember what they were and throw up the links in a comment.

Free State is a common spot mentioned and definitely a popular place...
but I now folks on here give it mixed reviews.

Free State
Has amazing beer, decent food and a Lawrence type crowd. You need at least 1 beer from this place.
It's not that I'm lazy; it's that I just don't care. (#739)
I agree...
I’m a fan, went there last Saturday. I just think some people think the food get’s overrated…which it does. Decent is a good word to describe that part of it.
They do have their Oktoberfest on tap right now though and I’m always a fan of that.

Their food menu is limited and average, yes.
But of course the beer is what makes it a Lawrence institution. Although, the last few time I’ve gone to 23rd St Brewery, I walk out with the nagging suspicion that their beer might just be better.
23rd St. beer is definitely good
just doesn’t have the ambiance that Free State does, and it’s not legendary, and it’s not on Mass St…..Ok that’s all I can give you for now

Go to Joe Schmos after the game
Beer, TVs, good food and Botchee ball. Locked.
Shit happens when you win championships
And on mass St. so you are a block or two away from all the previously mentioned bars
Shit happens when you win championships
have never heard of that place...
sounds like a good option for the post game

The 2 times I went there
it was empty. And it was a Saturday night both times. Just seemed like a weird set-up in there.
Joe Schmos sucked
The food was mediocre, bad beer selection and the damn boccee ball hitting the ceiling every 10 seconds was enough to force this place to close down for good
It's not that I'm lazy; it's that I just don't care. (#739)
Haha I've never been there
Apparently it sucks and closed. I just thought it looked like a cool place older people would dig

Pre game
I’d go Louise’s West, as has been suggested
Post-game you need tv’s and lots of them. I suggest 23rd St. Brewery (great beer), West Coast (great burgers), or Yacht Club.
Late-Night you can really just bar hop downtown. The further north on Mass. St., the better for the most part.

yacht club is great
so is all of Mass. St basically

Great wings
Only draw back is location, 6th street is a mess after the game.
If I were you I’d park on Mass St. Its a little bit of a walk to and from the stadium, but then your ride is there for the night
Shit happens when you win championships
it's all a matter of perspective...
every time I go back I park on Mass and walk down and it’s about 1/3 of the walking that I do going downtown in Denver on a Saturday night. I actually kind of enjoy the walk.

Very nice suggestions Triston....
the only thing I might add in is Johnny’s (but that can be difficult to get to for out of towners).

Pre game
Louises West is a great choice, not far from the stadium and has got the whole neighborhood bar feel to it because, well, it’s in the middle of a neighborhood. Rick’s Place on 9th St. is even closer to the stadium and is another good option for a place to drink. Also anywhere on Mass St. at this point too.
Post-Game: Someone mentioned Yacht Club and I think that is a great choice. Plenty of TV’s, bar food that’s at least average. Can’t go wrong with Mass St. again, Jefferson’s has good food but is also not that big so if you have a group that might not be great. Free State Brewery isn’t great for watching games, but I highly recommend getting there for at least one beer. Some of the best beer the mid-west has to offer so if you like beer, you have to go there and try one.
Post-Post Game: Lots of options, kind of depends on the type of place you like. I would honestly say that going to Mass St. and just walking around and checking out places is a good bet, but I’ll also give you my run down on whats out there:
Starting on the South end of Downtown Mass.
Brothers: I’ve seen lots of brothers across the country and the one in Lawrence is different from every other one I’ve encountered. Very College, very cheap drinks, though. Haven’t liked going there post age 23
Fatso’s: Can vary from night to night, has a dj or a band some nights. Famous for their long Island specials and they will put you on your ass.
Louise’s Downtown: Louise’s West’s attractive cousin, if it’s schooner special night, definitely a good night to go. Very diverse demographic here.
Replay Lounge: Rarely been here, I think someone else mentioned it, though.
Red Lyon: Good bar. Definitely more of a 25 and up feel to it in this bar.
Sandbar: A real small bar on 8th st. in-between Mass and New Hampshire. Definitely has a cult following in Lawrence between students and locals as well, all types of people here.
Barrell House: This is a piano bar on New Hampshire street just down from Sandbar. A lot of the juice it had when it first opened has left but it still attracts a lot of people for the dueling pianos and the like. Definitely not too “collegey” (probably not a word)
Tonic: The new “in” bar downtown. Lots of college kids, had fun nights there but also been had nights of the good god get me out of here type.
Jayhawker at the Eldridge: Nice bar attached to the Eldridge Hotel. Great place to grab a drink with other adults and also famous for a wide array of Martinis.
Quintons: Probably the only one of the “mostly college kid” bars I’ll still go to. Had many-a-drunken stupors there
I’m sure I missed a couple but this is my knowledge, happy to reply if you have any type of place or crowd you’ll be looking for. Basically I think it’s safe to say that Mass St. and downtown has something for everyone though.

Very good synopsis
Under no circumstances should you ever go to Brothers unless you want to be shot or deal with assholes. Sorry, but I’ve been like ten times and had the same experience everytime.
Lousises Downtown, Quintons, Fatsos are all great places just to chill and drink. Sandbar is overrated. Its expensive, overly crowded, etc. Its a must visit at somepoint but not as great as its hyped up.
Red Lyon, IMHO is very underrated. Usually a cool crowd and pool and darts are fun.
Shit happens when you win championships
yes I second the fact that Brothers should be avoided...
and on that note, I’m out in downtown Denver two weeks ago and headed back to the light rail for the late night ride home when I walk by a place that I recognize…“It’s Brothers!!”. I said to myself…damn that sucks. I also ran into a Mizzou grad selling burritos on the corner and that brightened my day.

dude was in Denver a few weekends ago
saw Brothers too! I know in Iowa City it’s like a really great place to go, someone told me there it wasn’t bad either and then in Minneapolis I think I’ve heard a lot of people go there. For some reason, it’s more of a sports bar, place to eat and in Lawrence it’s just a straight booty slappin dance party, hope dudes from Topeka aren’t there that night so you get shot type of place. They do have some ridiculous 10 cent wing night, though.

Definitely agree with this. Not really a sports bar, but they’ll have games on. Just go and get a beer or two. They’ll have some of their fall brews out now, so give it a shot.
You really can’t go wrong in Lawrence. Having been to Atlanta quite a few times, your money will go miles farther out here. Like about two dozen more drinks farther.
Have fun!

And Oatmeal Stout which will be great when it gets cold
Hoping that they get their asses in gear to release a specialty brew in the spring.

forgot to mention Johnny's
It is across the bridge on the other side of the Kansas River from Mass St., really not a terrible walk but I’ve never done it. It’s a pretty big bar with lots of college kids and others. You may even run into some of the KU football players as well unless something has changed this season. If Todd Reesing is in town, it’s a good bet he’ll be behind the bar serving drinks.

Yeah not much out there
But 6th and Kasold has kind of a fun little hole in the wall irish bar, 6th and Waka there is Johnnys which is pretty cool and never TOO crowded as well as some other restaurants.

Johnny's was my bar for sports
Decent food, well priced drinks and a good mix of students and local flavor. My fav spot just to hang out was the Replay Lounge but it’s not really a sports bar.

Interesting. I was never a big fan of the place myself, but I always thought it was considered the “quintessential KU bar.”

I put it on my initial list to him...
but based on the group wanting to watch football during the afternoon it probably isn’t the best spot. Just not a lot in the way of TV’s or good TV’s in that place…unless it’s changed since I’ve been. But yes, definitely an institution at Kansas.
