Kansas Jayhawk News and Notes 9.9.10

Thursday and it's time to send out the positive vibes.  Warden brings us the statistical look at the upcoming weekend contest and we have two Georgia Tech bloggers checking in with answers to questions from the Rock Chalk Talk Jayhawk contingent.

Ok...so it might not all be positive it just hasn't been a good week to be a Kansas fan.  But I'm definitely ready to move on and BELIEVE once again so let's have at it.  KUGrad, serve us up some kool-aid!

Misc. Disrespect

The Sports Network - Football Championship Subdivision
"I think the environment that we're going to play in Cedar Falls is going to be much more of a hostile environment than Memorial Stadium in Kansas. That was pretty docile," North Dakota State coach Craig Bohl said. "And the type of team that we're going to be playing is going to be a much more physical, aggressive football team than KU. And quite frankly I think we're going to be playing a better opponent. I know one school is in the Big 12 and the other one is in the Missouri Valley. I think that gives an indication on how we see Missouri Valley play and the respect we give Northern Iowa."

I'm on the Bronco bandwagon. I want this team in the title game.

From the Keegan article:
Trying to put his finger on what went wrong and how it can be fixed, running back/captain Angus Quigley said, "When times get rough in practice and people are fatigued, we can’t take shortcuts and maybe not run as hard and things like that. It’s the little things in practice that people might be getting away with that are carrying over into the game."

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

And a quote from the Newell piece along similar lines:
Coach sees a problem just a few seconds into the play, though.

“The receiver spacing is not good at all,” Coach says. "Those receivers need to run their routes a lot harder than they did and therefore, create more space and more space between defenders as well.

“When you get inside the red zone, everything’s compacted down, and so you have to have good spacing with your routes.”

But, but, but....

WRs are supposed to be the strength of the team!

Coach Gill’s players will run through brick walls for him – the Buffalo players told us so!

Something is seriously not adding up here.

This quote from the first article sums up the QB situation best. More proof Gill is an idiot
After months of competition, Pick was named the starter. That decision have stood for at least a few games instead of a few quarters.

It’ll be a shame if this one blemish ends up costing Pick his chance at being starting quarterback at KU.

After earning the job in practice, the sophomore deserves better than that.

Coach Bohl has said it all

It is truly lower than a snakes belly in a wagon wheel rut. We have been superiorly disrespected. The GT game now becomes more critical than ever. The credibility of the team and its coaches is truly on the line, as well as for every Jayhawk supporting them.

How have we been disrespected?

Respect is earned, not given. What did you see on Satruday that made you think we earned any respect in the college football world?

Guess you got me

on that one. We will either earn it on saturday or fall further into the football black hole. I am not sure what odds makers saw that made for such a low point spread unless they believe that we cant really be that bad.

I'm surprised no one has commented on..

Pick’s pick article. Man that RB could have walked in from the flat. Execution was really poor at times.

That was a really good breakdown of the interception

Looking at it again, I can see why a coach might be so down on Pick – that was a TERRIBLE throw. Not only did three defenders have a shot at the pick, there was NO WAY that ball could get to the receiver. It’s not like he was pressured and had to make a quick decision and went for it, either. Even if his mindset was “I HAVE to get this ball into the endzone” (which it shouldn’t have been), he picked the worst option to throw to.
This doesn’t mean I think Pick should be benched so hastily, but if he is struggling to make a simple decision like this, I wonder what else we haven’t been seeing in practice.

The only people who really know where [the edge] is are the ones who have gone over it.

So it took that throw for the coaches to see it?

We’re worse off than I thought.

From an outside perspective, it's seemed like Pick was the obvious choice from the get-go

But instead, TG has been repeatedly trying to sneak Webb into the QB battle. We’ve all wondered “why” and “what the hell is going on?”. Maybe it’s that Pick has some serious issues (like not being able to progress through reads and throwing to guys who are triple-covered, even when not under pressure) that have kept TG from locking him in as the starter (rampant speculation on my part). (It would also explain why Mangino never let Pick throw ( more rampant speculation).)

The only people who really know where [the edge] is are the ones who have gone over it.

Then Gill should handle it.

Not the half-assed approach we’re seeing now.

Bad read

Obviously the play evauation from bad receiver effort to a qb with lots of time and never moved his head anywhere but to follow one read has to change. Interesting that one play summarizes a lot about Picks ability to be a long term qb. Reesing just had that ability to go thru the progression in a short period of time. Hard to teach that.

Nice comment on ku football

Dear KU Football, time to take the skirts off, grow a pair and let them hang on saturday, excuses are like as———, you are not boys anymore and mommy does not need to pat you on the butt and tell you how special you are every time you bring your finger paintings home.

by jhawki on Sep 9, 2010 11:33 AM CDT reply actions

On one hand he's calling it like he sees it, on the other he's trying to keep his team from getting a big head over defeating a 1A team
And quite frankly I think we’re going to be playing a better opponent.

The comment seems a bit harsh towards KU, but why should he give a crap if he hurts their feelings? He’s got a team to coach, and he needs to get them focused for the coming game.

The only people who really know where [the edge] is are the ones who have gone over it.
