Saw that article about EJ earlier this morning.

That’s definitely a good development for the basketball squad.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

Having seen EJ up close,

it really doesn’t surprise me that he’s now listed at 6’4". That kid is built, and he is big. I know Sherron was short for a D-1 PG (especially one at KU), but EJ is definitely not short. He could make some big strides this year, especially early, while Selby is learning the system and everything. I would not be at all surprised to see him in the rotation from the get-go.

I thought it was depressing.

They had highlights of the game and then showed Gill talking to the players afterward. He totally seems devoid of any passion or enthusiasm.

Highlights of the game?

You mean Chris Harris’ sack and DP’s reverse?

Micah does fantastic work

but I have to wonder how much "influence’ the KAI and Lew have over the actual content being released.

Perhaps I’m being paranoid.

Good piece in there regarding Gill and time. I am not a Ubben fan but thought it has some good points.

I disagree with the premise of Ubben's article

It’s clear that Ubben was watching his alma mater (MU) and not the KU game.

There is plenty of talent on the KU roster. It was poorly organized and refined. 10 men on the field for punts, mass player confusion, wasted timeouts, struggling to get the play called in from the sidelines……those things have nothing to do with player talent. And those things were very common place throughout our game. There was no motivation. There was no toughness, there was no passion. Those things have nothing to do with player talent.

Now, if you just saw the box score I can see drawing the conclustions Ubben did. But to those who actually watched the game…….well we witnessed much more.

agreed

the ’Hawks did not look prepared to play. Communication issues, confusion, who knows how blocking schemes (assuming there were some) got miscommunicated, etc.

I’m struggling on this, but…..MULLIGAN!!

I guess there's gotta be a break in the monotony, but Jesus, when it rains how it pours.

by JayhawkTom on Sep 7, 2010 8:52 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree completely. No one who actually saw the game would say that Gill was getting the most out of the team, and they simply weren’t talented enough. I’m a long way from calling for Gill’s resignation, but I also don’t like the “Mangino left the cupboard bare” excuses. This team is far more talented than when Mangino took over in ’02

by PenguinHawk on Sep 7, 2010 9:06 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I don't disagree

that there were a lot of coaching mishaps in this first game and that we should have easily won this game.
But I think the point is that KU does have work to do from a talent standpoint. How do we know that we have a lot of talent? Recruiting services? I think we all know how reliable those can be.

Remember, this is a team that lost their final 7 games of last season, and that was with the best QB in school history, 2 NFL WR’s and another NFL player in the defensive secondary. Those guys are all gone now.

I think we have a lot of potentially good, young talent. But they are young and inexperienced and potential gets you nothing on Saturdays but hopes.

Basically, I think the writer of the article makes a good point.

by I need more Esteban on Sep 7, 2010 11:02 AM CDT up reply actions

Still no way they were out-talented by NDSU.

Next Monday, fine write that column. After losing to an average (at best) FCS team? Nah, that had very little to do with talent.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

At this point

I think we’ve all seen enough out Patterson, McDougald, Hawkinson, Laptad, Springer, Harris, and Smith to know that there is solid talent there. I’d say you can make a strong case for Capra, Thorson and Biere as well, despite their problems Saturday. We’re young, but this isn’t just a team full of fresh faces. You can’t tell me that NDSU has answers for all those players and that they are simply better athletes.

by PenguinHawk on Sep 7, 2010 11:31 AM CDT up reply actions

You can say this team has no talent.

But we should still be talented enough to beat NDSU. I’m still giving Gill a chance, and hoping that this was just an anomaly.

by ISellDrugs on Sep 7, 2010 8:48 AM CDT up reply actions

This I really agree with.

No way they were out-talented on Saturday. Seemed to me his point was don’t judge Gill off of this one game and that’s something I can also agree with.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

From the TWIS article at SBN,

a UW commentor nails the coaching change cycle
“There are actually 13 stages which play out between coaching changes:

1) Post Season Hype. We Competed With The Cougars—beat them badly or even lose to them in stupendous fashion and talk about how you’ll be dominant soon. Next year is the Return To Dominance.

2) LOI Day Hype. Another Crop of Fetters’ King County All Stars Signs. Incomparable talent pours into the program and Auburndawg gets starstruck while nearly everyone worth an actual damn in the region has gone elsewhere, (J-Stew, Schilling, Mays, Heaps) for better opportunities. How can the Ducks, Cal, Beavers, whomever, possibly compete now?

3) Spring Game Hype. Gold against Purple, Purple against White, It Doesn’t Matter. The O-line looks great, the D-line looks improved and no one notices tubs of soft margarine trying to sharpen butter knives. Another year in the system of Actual Coaching will improve everyone automatically come autumn.

4) Summer Hype. Everyone Has Stayed And Worked Harder Than Anyone In The History Of The Game. Piles of goo like Cort Dennison lose five pounds but still have moobs. New weight lifting records are set. The coaches have been learning from their mistakes. Everyone at Montlake will improve because there are no two star players impeding the Return To Dominance. No one has more upside than we do.

5) Fall Camp Hype. No One Will Be Able To Stop Stanback/Locker/Montana. Sometimes this stage is totally ridiculous, such as 10 in ’10! and Jake For Heisman.

6) Prediction Time. We Will Be 10-2 Road Winners. Never mind the inconvenient fact that the last road win was in 2007, the Dawgs are going to the Rose Bowl.

7) Reality Sets In. The Team Loses Like Always. The ever elusive low level bowl game seems a pipe dream and the team looks like a decent impersonation of Gilby’s and Ty’s best teams.

8) Rationalizations Begin, The Coaches Are Being Paid About $3 Million Per Year To Learn On The Job. Bad schemes, bad shot calling, bad execution, bad reads, bad special teams, bad defensive lapses, are all blamed on the predecessor because the alternative is too horrific to contemplate.

9) Season Down The Drain. Birth (Or Rebirth) Of The Negadawg. No need to elaborate.

10) The Fire Coach _______ Website Is Announced.

11) The Conspiracy Theories Are Spun. Does The Upper Campus Hate Football? Do The Trustees Want the Husky Stadium Site For Its Real Estate Value?

12) Name Your Favorite Coach To Replace Coach X. Big Names Are Floated But None Are Realistic. The doogs do not realize that UW is no longer a destination job, but a career killer. Undeterred, they believe the coaching savior of choice will come to be the Next Don James Forever. After getting shaken down for pay raises by coaches nationwide, the final stage is. . . .

13) Hire The Next Incompetent Coach For More Money Than The Last One. Then, restart the cycle for the new hack at Step 2, with stories about what a wonderful job he did salvaging the latest class of Fetters’ King County All Stars. Apologist Doogs for the new guy are on the job immediately while the old line Dawgs just shake their heads at the insanity of it all. Meanwhile no one fires the UW President."
