Kansas Jayhawk News and Notes 9.23.10

Daily Grind - September 22 from Kansas Jayhawks on Vimeo.

I have to say these Gridirons hit a weak spot with me. It's like the apology from that person in life that you can't stay mad at.  I know there are mixed feelings on the start of the Gill era, but these always seem to make me feel a little bit better about the way things are going.

If there is one thing Kansas basketball has taught me over the recent years under Bill Self, it's to enjoy the process.  As KC said yesterday, that '08-'09 KU basketball season was more fun in a lot of ways than this past season because we had a chance to watch a team go through the highs and low and eventually come together.

Now obviously football is a different animal but maybe this Kansas team can provide a little of that same enjoyment in their own way.  It starts Saturday, I'll use the term must win.  Then it's 2-2 going into conference play.

Ok

So we pay a ton of money to our head football coach and his staff. And already they have a secondary NCAA infraction?

Color me disappointed.

Right

It’s a pretty minor oversight, but at this level there is no excuse for just not knowing the rules. I’m really pulling for Gill, but this stuff really makes the coaching staff look ameteurish (if that’s a word). Very frustrating.

sounds like it's...

a brand new rule though. I glanced over the article so maybe I missed something…but isn’t that the case?

Yeah, that was the impression I got. It doesn’t seem like it’s a huge problem (sounds like the sort of mistake I would make), but it’s an oversight that probably shouldn’t be happening at this level.

I'd say it falls more the AD's office than Gill and his staff.

As we all know, they’ve been fairly busy/occupied the last 4 or so months.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

Sorry no.

This is a football rule. Coach Gill runs the football program. The buck (all $2 million of them) stops at his desk.

Not only did we violate it in the first game, but also the second.

There is no excuse for that. “Amatuerish” whether it’s a word or not, fits perfectly here.

I'll respectfully disagree.

Obscure rules, compliance, and all that other stuff falls under AD’s office. Somebody there should run through all scenarios with the staff before the season starts. Looks like somebody dropped that ball.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

Joe Daily!

I didn’t know he was on our staff. We were in the game (and probably should have won) against NU back in 2004 solely because of his awful play

Bring back Callahan!

I liked NU football a lot more in that time

Yeah, I thought Stamm was the only Buffalo staff Gill brought with him.

Guess not.

I'm viewing this as a positive.

Now we have a reason for the loss last Friday. Once we get this corrected, we’re all set. 10-2 baby!

this may not be a popular opinion here, i don't know

but i agree with a lot of what’s in the newsweek article…college should be about learning and preparing young people to contribute meaningfully to society…it seems that we’ve gotten out of whack. too many people (not just athletes) go to college for the wrong reasons and come out totally unprepared with the skills necessary to land a good, productive, meaningful job.

i know too many people who have gone to college, gotten an education, journalism, or some such other degree who end up as pharma sales reps or some other marginally necessary position, because they have no real skills.

i think it would be nice if more 4-year colleges offered some sort of technical or vocational-type education, so you came out of school with a real skill…i think the liberal-arts portion of school is very meaningful and opens young people’s minds to new ideas, but there should be more practical skills taught as well.

would it be so bad if someone came out of school with a certificate as a skilled machinist or welder or some other such vocational skill? there are a fair number of people who go to college and really aren’t cut out for it but would still benefit from the experience and would do well in a technical or vocational field.

BOOM YOSTED!

Are you saying I'm not contributing to society with my J-school degree?
