Kansas Jayhawk News and Notes 9.20.10
First day of a new week. We've got KC's recruiting roundup, new Big 12 power rankings and the weekly blogpoll on deck today.
This week we've got a special guest for Wednesday's roundtable that we're pretty excited about. And of course Saturday morning I'm jumping on a plane and headed to Lawrence to watch what I hope is a win. Kansas opened as a 23 point favorite so hopefully....fingers crossed. Anyone else besides KUGrad going to be in attendance?

Haven't read the article yet...
but I think the TCJ probably hits it on the head.
Everyone – in particular the coaches – just looks out of sync. I’m thrilled to know that when we happen to put it all together we can beat a team like GT, but this inconsistency is very depressing. I just hate that I expect nothing out of this team from week to week.
And yet, I still can’t wait ’til Saturday. Nothing like a beautiful fall day, tailgating at Memorial.
Good points by Lutz.
Since Southern Miss was the first game I’ve seen on TV this year, it was strange that every time they cut to a shot of Turner Gill, he was just standing around with the same look on his face; not talking into his headset or to the players and coaches. I know he’s a mellow dude, but you’d think he’d be more involved. Especially in a game in which we were struggling.
And for me it's not so much the lack of emotion, it's the lack of apparent urgency
I can see the benefit of having a coach who stays calm, if it trickles down to the players staying cool under pressure. But if it looks like he doesn’t care at all and isn’t worried about the result, that’s a different story.
(Also, in the back of my mind (I guess from being a Royals fan) is that maybe his lack of emotion/urgency/whatever stems from him not considering this season a “real” season but more of a rebuilding/development year. That would take some serious balls, but what if he’s actually just not worrying about the Wins/Losses and just wants to see the players and the team improving as the season goes along?)
The only people who really know where [the edge] is are the ones who have gone over it.

This is dangerous
“but what if he’s actually just not worrying about the Wins/Losses and just wants to see the players and the team improving as the season goes along?”
He won’t be employed for long.

yeah that's one of those things...
that sounds good in principle this year when you know you’ll be given some time by the school administration, but before you know it you end up five years in talking about how close you are and then you sound like Dan Hawkins.

I'll be out there
As always. Something I noticed from the first article. Apparently in the first half the D was afraid the play wouldn’t be in on time and kept freaking out and calling their “Mayday defense.” I wonder if those were the occasions that the corners backed way off the LOS at the last second and gave them those 10 yard cushions. I didn’t notice that happening in the 2nd half. Initially I thought this was on Torbush, but perhaps our players were just panicked by the no-huddle offense. Either way, I suppose it’s a bad thing.

I get
concerned about the players stating that they did not play with any or little energy. This from seniors who are on the last go around. As I watched numerous games over the weekend I notice batted balls by defensive linemen. When was the last time we batted down some throws at the line and for that matter have we had a sack yet? The defense Friday night brought back many bad memories of years past.
Agreed
Batted balls is something I’ve been harping on too. I can’t remember the last time we smacked down a ball. But then again our DL is not tall by any means.
We do have a sack (Chris Harris got one on a corner blitz). However I don’t think the DL has registered a single sack yet.

not to be too simplistic
but i think gill’s extreme lack of outward emotion is projecting onto the players…i don’t like crazy hotheads like mike stoops or bo pelini, but there’s a happy medium…you can show some emotion without being out of control.
it’s probably overblown, as i was watching the auburn/clempson game on saturday and chizik showed no emotion the whole game, but i’d at least like to see some encouragement and coaching going on.
this is my biggest concern with gill…i maintain that this program still needs a hardass that will push the team towards its’ potential, not a “players coach” that makes everyone feel good about themselves.
BOOM YOSTED!

I wish they'd show the coordinators
Gill says he gives complete control to his coordinators. I get the feeling that Torbush probably gets a little more riled up than Gill. But since they don’t show him on the sidelines very often, it’s hard to see that…..and maybe that’s giving us a false sense of what’s really going on?
