Week One Depth Chart Is Out

Week one and a few changes to the depth chart to discuss.  Here's the rundown.

Offense

On offense there are really only two items of note.  First Chris Omigie has separated himself from Rod Harris as the #2 at wideout behind Bradley McDougald.

Secondly, Quigley and Sands remain one and two at running back.  Based on Gill's presser today it's safe to say we'll see one freshman but not both as they do feel good about the combo in place on the two deep right now.

Defense

Defensively the biggest news is Toben Opurum listed as the #2 at the strongside outside linebacker spot.  He's adjusted quickly and will play this week at linebacker with a fairly quick transition taking place.

At end Quinton Woods and Kevin Young are now the two battling for remaining opening as Tyrone Sellers has moved to the #2 behind Jake Laptad replacing Keba Agostinho.  Agostinho will still play.

At corner it looks as though Isiah Barfield has secured the second spot with Calvin Rubles backing him up and likely to get an opportunity.

The DT position remains Pat Dorsey and Richard Johnson as the starters with John Williams and Randall Dent as the #2's.

Special Teams

The punt return game will see the return of Daymond Patterson, while the kickoff return unit will see DJ Beshears and Bradley McDougald.  Beshears should have been back their last year most likely.

Toben sneaking up that quickly is kind of scary.

Guess we’ll find out if that scary is good or bad.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

considering we have 2 walk ons and a RB

at LB the above statement is entirely true.

There is no red like Chiefs red.

True.

Still though…pretty surprising.

The skeptic in me wonders if there's a little bit of CYA in the move

Exile the previous top RB, then have a bunch of injuries – looks like a bad move by Gill and Co. The only way moving Toben off RB looks good is if he gets some PT at LB. Moving him up the depth chart makes the position-switch look better than if he were farther down. Hopefully I am just being skeptical and that his progress if for real.

I hope thats not the case

But I’d buy that

I'll be interested to see how this utility position is used

Will it primarily replace a wide receiver? A tight end? Fullback? And are these guys so talented that Coach Gill felt like he had to find a way to get them on the field, or is this just a position concept that he likes?

Also, I’m betting we play a lot of Nickel and Dime (at least early in the season) to compensate for the LB situation. So many teams spread the field with speed these days anyways, so it only makes sense.

I'm with you

Hopefully its a position where the guy just goes around and hits people. Like a pinball.

I’d imagine its a guy who will see maybe a few snaps a game, line up in the back field, motion a lot, etc. Just kind of another distraction for teams to deal with. Sometimes hes in the backfield and catches it or blocks, sometimes he splits wide.

Packers do this a lot with Lee at Tight End now that Finley is their pass catching tight end.

Won't be nickel and diming it in Week 2

against Georgia Tech. They will need all the physical run stoppers they can muster for that game. I just hope it doesn’t turn into a track meet where we get a couple of LB’s banged up.

Also, NDSU

should be a primer for GT since they run the ball alot. Their coach is a Nebraska guy, too. So the first couple weeks won’t be much of an opportunity to run 5 or 6 DB’s out there.

by K.U. on Aug 31, 2010 4:50 PM CDT up reply actions

true

but the only reason why NDSU runs is their QB and receivers are horrible

I think it’s about options. I think they want an offense that can throw out a variety of looks, formations and personnel and they have a package in the playbook that necessitates this type of player.

That said, I’m anxious to see it used as well.

Cool to see Dedeaux as second string TE

Been wainting 3 years to see anything out of him. Seems like most of the defensive battles (end, corner) are ending up like we all thought they would

Just an FYI…they did express that there could still be last minute changes. Things are taking shape and I suspect this is close to the finished product, but don’t be surprised by a last minute tweak here or there.

Is there a chance Toben ever goes back to running back

Ya know, like Angus did?

How exactly does he feel about that?

Because remember – he came to KU because he could be a RB here, not a FB. And now, he’s a LB here. Just wondering beyond the obvious “willing to do whatever it takes to help the team win” line.

I don’t know if anyone knows for sure. I think he trusts the staff and wants to do well. Cautious optimism might be the most accurate depiction but he’s obviously said all the right things. The thing that makes me think he is buying in, is the speed with which he’s responded and worked into the lineup.

Over on the Slant boards

Jon Kirby said he’s heard Toben is “embracing” the new role. Encouraging, if true.

by PenguinHawk on Sep 1, 2010 5:39 AM CDT up reply actions

Toben is athletic....

and not totally unfamiliar with the position. Its not like it was that long ago that he actually played some defense. This is a different level now but Im hearing he is agrresive and has a decent nose for the ball. Still learning the X and O’s and terminology. Pretty smart kid so he will just get better.

I know it's rare

for a punter or place kicker to get hurt, but in the event Jacob or Alonso do…..who is Ron Doherty?

I don’t think I’ve ever seen his name before. Walk-on?

Played in Klein Texas. I think he’s a walk on but he’s going to be handling kickoff duties for Kansas which means he must have something working in his favor. Sounds like he’s got a big time leg.

Branstetter is going to have to work

REAL hard to find someone to tackle on field goals…

There is no red like Chiefs red.

by labbadabba on Sep 1, 2010 9:47 AM CDT up reply actions

Wait

So he’s going to be handling kick-off duties immediately? Like, this Saturday?

If he’s got a big-time leg, would he also be a candidate to try the +40 yarders?

I thought I had read that Brandstetter had worked hard on leg strength in the off season. I guess not hard enough………

by Rivethead on Sep 1, 2010 10:16 AM CDT up reply actions

yesterday during the presser...

he was named the guy that would be handling kickoffs.

I think they just want Branstetter as the gunner.

I think this is significant.

Branstetter rarely could get the ball in the endzone on kickoffs.

All we heard about last season was how much better he was on kickoffs

For touchbacks, etc and he sucked. I’m a better kicker than Branstetter is. I’m not even joking.

He is a better tackler though
