Has there ever been a 5* recruit at KU?

Some will say we have no chance, but I'm lovin' that Turner and Co. believe in the University more than some of our fans and are going after the best players. It will only take a player or 2 to believe, and then the flood gates will open.

Star-divide

#6 MLB  Anthony Wallace from Skyline HS in Dallas, TX, at 6-2, 225 lbs can run 4.55  40. He lists us as medium interest along with Arkansas, Florida, LSU, Miami (Fl), Minnesota, Nebraska, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas Tech, UCLA, USC; all of whom have offered him a schollie. Unfortunately, Texas A&M is listed as high interest, but there is plenty of time to change his mind. Also, OU & UT are listed as medium interest, but are not listed as having offered him.

There are also 5 other 4* players that Scout lists as being interested in KU and vice versa. I'm guessing there are more, but that is all Scout lists. I also wonder a bit about Scouts' review/ranking, since Darrian Miller is only listed as a 3* RB at #55, while ESPN has him in the top 100 overall. Unfortunately, it's the best I can do.

For the most part, it doesn't make sense to argue much about recruiting and rankings much anyway, since it is so inexact. I'm just excited that we're weeks away from the first game, and the staff is getting tons, TONS, of positive press, and doing a great job of selling all the amazing investments of the rest of the athletic department and supporters of the program.

Stars can be tricky

I mean Ryan Murphy and Anthoney Webb were both 4 star DBs (well Murphy an athlete but ended up at DB) and Webb flamed out and Murphy has yet to see major minutes.

In regards to recruiting, especially now, I’m looking for depth where we need it most. For example, I would rather KU get two three star LBs than a 4 star, top 100 RB in next year’s class. Why? Because we are ultra thin at LB and have like 10 RBs on the roster.

I love taking a shot at the big boys, but I think you need to establish depth across the board. Then after you have a good mix of veterans and younger guys spread across the positions, take shots at more 4-5 star guys to find some stars to add to what we already have in place.

Growing up as a Wisconsin fan, I saw Barry Alvarez do this first hand. When he got to Wisconsin he made sure to spread his recruiting efforts across the whole team, and built an average offense and defense. Then after the team started winning 8 games every year, he was able to go out and land some superstars (Ron Dayne, Lee Evans, Chris Chambers, Brooks Bollinger, Jim Sorgi, Jim Leonard, a shit ton of lineman all NFL players) to mix in with what he had in place and presto: two strait rose bowls and a lot of ass whooping.

Like I’ve said in the past, I love taking shots at the big boys. I just hope KU continues to land a lot of players across the board, 2 star, 3 star, 4 star whatever. I hope we can find a balance between chasing after (and occasionally) snagging high recruits like this cat while also locking up the kids in the area and texas we have a very good shot at.

It almost seems like you're being critical,

but then I realize that this staff is doing exactly what you are asking for. I’m sure they appreciate your vote of confidence.
A truckload of big azz lineman with some other solid recruits, and looking for a few stars to plug in around the core. The middle of the D could rock for a long time with Anthony Wallace controlling the middle and Tharp, Farley, or whomever flying around the edges. Would 6-2, 245, 4.5 be enough of an upgrade in the middle?
All that beef would certainly go a long way to opening holes big enough to leave the RB’s winded and needing a breather from one of the other half dozen.
How long til the season starts? This year will just be an appetizer.

No not being critical at all

Just hoping we just build depth. I’ve seen what happens when we don’t have depth. KU football, 2006. Blowing late leads every game. Like you said, the staff seems to be stockpiling up on needs (Oline) while taking shots at premier recruits. Like it so far

Wasn't

Brooks Bollinger a TRANSFER from Nebraska?

I could be wrong on this……

Impossible

He started as a true freshman, and played all 4 years as a starter (very rare at QB)

You’re welcome to look it up, but I’m pretty sure I’m correct on this one. I saw him thrust into action as a true frosh in person, it was kind of like when Reesing came off the bench and lost his redshirt and everyone was kind of like ….wait what?

5* recruits

I believe Kirwin Bell and Frank Seuer would have been 5 star recruits under the current system. KC Brown in that same class may have made it, too.

You are right

When did the current star system start? Whith ESPN I am sure the EESPN top 150 will be the next benchmark.

They were hyped a lot

but do you really think they were 5*’s? Could it have been that there was just a lack of talent otherwise on those teams that it just seemed like as big an upgrade as was imaginable? I wasn’t following FB and recruiting enough to really remember.

It also makes me wonder about some of the greats we have had at KU. Sayers, Cromwell, Riggins, … Were they good enough in HS to be projected as being as great as they became?

by dagger108 on Aug 14, 2010 11:40 PM CDT reply actions

I think that...

Sayers wouldn’t of been in my opinion. He was labeled as too small and too slow coming out of high school and that’s one of the reasons why he was so motivated to prove everyone wrong.

Cromwell was highly touted and I could see him being rated a real high 4* or maybe a 5*.

Riggins was a beast coming out of high school and every recruiter who saw him thought he was the best football player they’d ever seen. I think he for sure would of been a 5* recruit if they had places like rivals or scout rating them back then.

by WildHawk on Aug 16, 2010 2:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Bell et al

Kirwin Bell was probably the second best running back in the county behind Herschel Walker coming out of HS, and Seuer was among the top 5-6 quarterbacks that year. You must remember those guys and some others of that era got us (and John Hadl, iirc) in a little hot water over recruiting violations. KC Brown at least came from KC so it was conceiveable that he would have come to KU anyway, but the others were longshots at best without some sort of “incentives”.

by KU7679 on Aug 15, 2010 11:48 AM CDT reply actions

Gilbert Brown

Would’ve come close. Most magazines considered him one of the best linemen in the nation.

We haven't offered yet.

There is a reason for that.

I really hope...

he does! He loves the program. He’s a local kid with a legendary KU father. He’s got built in fan support for those reasons. He has the size of a division 1 player already and he looks like he potentially could have the tools to be a solid one also. It looks like he does need a lot of work though. But even if he didn’t become a starter, I think it would do him a world of good to have that kind of stability, local support, and leadership around him that we have with our new coaching staff and the hometown atmosphere.

His son is not in good shape

I would doubt he has the conditioning worthy of a DII offer. His father was a great track and field athlete before packing on the pounds (weighed around 315 tops at KU). Jamal is not like his father. He needs to drop fifty pounds or he’ll have difficulties in life.

In a previous post,

I commented about Malcom Brown, the #2 RB (?), #7 nationally, and the best player out of TX having KU on his list.

Cross him off, as ESPN reported yesterday that he committed to UT. Some will say, “See, I told you KU had no chance.” I on the other hand still am excited that he and at least a few others are considering KU, so there is a chance.

As Turner and company continue to build the KU FB dynasty, more and more 4*’s and 5*’s will come.

by dagger108 on Aug 20, 2010 9:45 AM CDT reply actions

Tony Blevins woulda been a 5* back in '93...

…he was the #1 or #2 DB in the country out of Rockhurst back in the day. I remember he was picking between us and reigning national champ Alabama (among others).
