The ongoing LB saga
Dudley suffered a torn left labrum, a shoulder cartilage, early in '09, then played out the season in pain.
"How much did it affect me? I’d say quite a bit. I didn’t have a lot of strength on my left side after the injury. How much? I don’t really know. But I know I’m looking forward to this season, playing with a healthy shoulder again."

I like that Drew isn't dwelling on last year or last year's circumstances. He acknowledges it, but seems quick to move on and focus on this year's team and team goals. It isn't even about this year for him. It's about this year's team goals.
It is also nice to get some insights from Coach Torbush.

Not the first LB to be thrown under the bus....
Manginos policy of no injury reporting kept guys like Mort and Rivera from disclosing hamstring and knee issues. Played hurt with no subs and got blamed for not playing up to their abilities!!! Holt had hamstring issues his senior year also. Drew will be fine…..he has good instincts and wont blow assignments very often.
yeah the Mort/Rivera...
deal was a pretty bad situation for both of them.
I do understand some of the value in keeping injuries somewhat under wraps, but as a coach you should at the very least stick up for your players when they start taking heat while they are battling through those things to play for you.

He did
Throughout their careers Mangino said many times “those kids are dinged up”.
That’s the most you’re gonna get out of the Synder clone. I don’t know what else y’all were expecting Mangino to say.
Rivera, specifically, didn’t help his case when his dad started crying to any media outlet who would listen………that was embarassing.

I felt like he did that last year more than ever...
I guess I didn’t think he did that for Rivera.

The way I remember it . . .
Everyone was dogging on Rivera for playing horribly and his dad came to his defense. Of course, that was several years ago and I’m sure I don’t remember it 100% correctly.
A reporter asked him about his son and the defense struggling
And his dad responded “Mike is hurt. The whole defense is hurt.” Basically saying there are a lot of guys playing hurt and that could be one reason why the D went from dominant in 07 to poop in 08 with 9 of 11 starters returning.
Mangino said after we beat Missouri something like “these kids are all banged up, the way they fought through…etc.”
I think one reason we murdered Minnesota so bad in the bowl game (apart from being better) is guys got time to rest and heal. I mean the players just looked faster and better, especially on defense.

Everyone was dogging on
There in lies a big chunk of the problem – ignorant bloggers going off from behind a keyboard. Part of that is the nature of blogging, as is pathetically evident at other sites (like the KCStar). Another part of it though is a matter of how the team was being led, and Mangino wasn’t stepping up to defend his players so Papa Rivera felt he had to defend his son. I think I would too. It’s part of being a dad.
I've got to be the worst...

Nah -
Neither one of you guys calls out individual players and make vapid speculations on their off-field lives. I think that’s what Rivera’s dad had in mind in regards to bloggers.

Not Galindo
and not sure who Weekly is, but the others all pulled bonehead moves at least once. It casts a bad light on KU and therefore they deserve some disdain from loyal fans.
Galindo
left KU because Lawrence didn’t have the “Latin culture” he craved. You can’t get any more boneheaded than expecting Lawrence, KS to look, sound, and feel like Miami, FL.
I’m shocked, SHOCKED you don’t know who Monroe Weekly is. He’s KU football public enemy #1. He’s the d-bag that Mangino took a BIG chance on (and lost). He got booted from the team and then went squealing to the NCAA….which caused the investigation that put us on probabation that limited our scholarships for 3 years that created our lack of depth that we have today.
As I understand it, 99% of the things he told the NCAA ended up being complete lies. But still the damage was done.

Boneheaded
I would question whether Galindo expected KU to be latin, or wheher he just realized how much he missed it once he got here. Either way, I don’t consider that boneheaded, but more importantly not even close to the same criminal category that most of the others fall into.
Thanks, I think, for the background on Weekly. Sounds a bit like an 80’s something BB recruit that ended up going to Memphis (?). Maybe I’ll blame my ignorance on having to rely on the KCStar and LJW for all my info in those days instead of all the profound knowledge of RCT.
The good news is that it makes the turn around under Gill & Co. all the more dramatic.
at least back then
the Star had Jason King covering KU… J. Brady could give us so much more…
There is no red like Chiefs red.
Thanks for the history,
tho in some ways I think I was better off without it. Glad we aren’t likely to have any monroes around in the future, and hopefully be done with the academic issues as well.
Other sites
I don’t necessarily agree with everything posted here, but generally speaking the comments/bloggers seem at least intelligent. I’ve been on other sites where people will directly contradict what Coach Self or others will say about a player.
I realize that I just have a fan’s (non-player’s) perspective on FB & BB in particular, so I won’t be giving much in the way of in depth analysis. Generally speaking, I tend to agree with the coaches. Elsewhere though, the bloggers are obviously smarter than me and the coaches. They’ll also take offense to any sort of implication that maybe there is a reason that the coaches are employed by KU and they aren’t.
As for RCT – best, most intelligent group of bloggers around. Thanks
If Mangina
really had been playing all these injured players you think its realistic that we could stay relatively injury-free the rest of the way?
Gill’s definitely not the type of coach that will keep a player out there if hes not at full strength so at this point injuries/lack of depth seem like our biggest concern.
I wouldn't be so sure...
This team is going about as hard at it in practice as they have in recent years. Part of that is the extreme heat but the other part is this staff is about testing these guys and finding the guys that can overcome some adversity. He may be a positive person, but that doesn’t mean Coach Gill is just going to roll over and never ask his players to push their limits.

Pushing together
I love the one video of Gill stretching with 15, and doing a little trashing. The players all know that Turner, Chuck, … have gone through it – and done it exceptionally well. They’re still athletes, and leading by coming alongside.
If MM ever was an athlete, he certainly wasn’t one when he was coaching – physically or mentally. It is the latter that is really the bigger issue. The guy who got the burns from the crab crawling said he would have done it again without complaint – but took exception to being ridiculed/taunted about it in front of the team. It’s the psyc part that missed the mark more than anything.
It’s not about whether the players are pushed or not. It’s in an athlete’s DNA to push, and push some more when challenged – even if they’re at their limit. The mind can only be seperated from the body for so long, and afterwards it – the mind, needs to be strengthened, so that it can again be ready to push the body past what the body thinks is its limits. The real battle is upstairs, and that’s why Turner will win with this crew, and in the future – in the homes and on the field.
excellent points...
and I couldn’t agree more. Everything I’m hearing out of camp is turning me into a believer of the tactics. Gill will still need to find the talent, recruit it and build depth in the program over the long haul…but I’m a fan of the approach so far.

Disagree
“Gill’s definitely not the type of coach that will keep a player out there if hes not at full strength”
I disagree with this statement. I think Coach Gill is exactly like any other coach. If a star player at 80% is still better than a reserve at 100%, the star player plays.
These coaches aren’t stupid. They realize wins = job security (and bonuses). And if a player who is banged up is still better than the reserve, he gives you a better chance of winning. So he plays.
