2010 Kansas Football Roster Talk

One of the first glimpses at the 2010 Kansas football roster is available as we are just a few short days away from Big 12 media days.

Obviously the players on the team aren't any secret, but there might be some interest in the reported heights and weights.  Maybe the new freshman on the roster and of course of special interest this year, any number changes going into the season since as we all know, there will be no names on the Jayhawk jersey's.

With that in mind let's dive in, take a look and get some high level thoughts on the 2010 Kansas Jayhawks.

Freshman

There are definitely some players in the freshman class who appear on paper to be well prepared.

Brandon Bourbon's 6'1" 208lb frame is pretty impressive.  In fact, the word is they had him drop a few lb's since his arrival and if you have that type of size with his athletic capabilities, there is certainly a chance to see the field.

By the same Token James Sims looks just as much the part at 6' 206.

As for the receivers Andrew Turzilli seems to have bulked up a bit while Brian Maura measuring in at 6'4" is a very nice target with his combination of size and speed.

Trent Smiley at 6'4" 232 isn't a bad place to start for a tight end and Jimmay Mundine's #41 jersey number brings about visions of a potential H-back threat in a Jayhawk uniform.

The last group jumping off the page is a group of defenders.  Jake Farley's 6'3" 215 pound listing wouldn't be too bad considering Huldon Tharp made an impact a year ago at a mere 6' 217.   Dexter McDonald and Jeremiah Edwards are two other players that on paper look the part at the position they play from day one.

Offensive Line

Beef!! It's what's for dinner.  Sam Elliott would enjoy this group.  It appears the focus on bulking up has paid off for some.  Jeremiah Hatch at 332, Duane Zlatnik at 326, Brad Thorson at 310 which I'm not sure I believe, and Jeff Spikes at 325

The bad news is two of those three are hurt, a third is in question and one is out for the season.  Tanner Hawkinson, Trevor Marrongelli and Sal Capra all need to get on the Big MAN plan.

Fullback and other Running Backs

Shades of the Joel Mackovicka and the Cory Schlesinger days at Nebraska?

The Jayhawks have 4 monster fullbacks on the roster and all claim the state of Kansas as their home.  Goddard's Justin Puthoff, Lawrence's Tyler Hunt, Lawrence's Jordan Fee and Sedwick Kansas native Steven Foster(maybe).

Even behind the fullbacks the running backs in general have some great size.  Angus Quigley and Toben Opurum both look prepared to pack a punch checking in at 231 and 240 respectively.

Unfortunetaly

We’ll have to cross Jeremiah Edwards off of the list.

Ed Fink is listed 6’ 3" and 221lbs.

Who is Steve Mestan? A walk-on LB from Wisconsin. Anyone know anything about him?

by Rolo on Jul 23, 2010 10:31 AM CDT reply actions

No, but I like him already

Size is nice

But speed defeats size.

Fortunately we have some of both.

Where isn't the beef?...

…DT unfortunately. Besides Parrish we don’t have one DT over 290! That’s pretty scary to me. Plus, I noticed that John Williams is listed at 6’3" 290. Am I wrong, or did he used to weigh over three bills? Anyway, hopefully we’ll get some push with our smaller quicker DT’s ala McClinton, but I’m a bit worried at this point, especially with Edwards not able to play now (not that he would have seen the field anyway this year).

by freudhawk on Jul 23, 2010 1:14 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah it scares me too

Our D-Line is very undersized. I can see Nebraska and Coloradie and Kansas State and all thems running teams having a field day against us

Williams dropped weight...

and it was by design, but your concerns are valid. Honestly I think there was a good chance Edwards would have seen the field so it’s a big blow. DT is becoming a pretty important piece in terms of recruiting this year.

I think it was a possibility...

based on our depth and size concerns at the position.

two things...

first, yes Edwards was a good looking prospect. If he hadn’t been only 6’1" he probably would have seen quite a few more offers.

second, we’re thin at DT. John Williams is the only one that has shown consistency that actually has the size. Richard Johnson Jr. has been serviceable the last two years but both he and Pat Dorsey are definitely undersized.

Parish has the build, but there are plenty of questions surrounding him at this point.

The remaining few options all redshirted last year Randall Dent and Travis Stephens(most likely DE) being the two most likely to contribute. Losing Jamal Greene hurt a lot.

probably read it here. I mentioned a while back that they were toying around with a move to o-line and then d-tackle with him.

Farley has really beefed up

I thought he was like 200 as a senior, he has good speed too.

Units

If you guys had to rank the various team units this year, how would you stack them up?

I would say biggest strength…. wide receivers. Biggest weakness….defensive line.

Thoughts?

I'd go this way (from strongest to weakest)

Wide Receivers
Running Backs
Defensive Backfield
Offensive Line
Quarterbacks
Defensive Line
Linebacker (edges out DLine as weakest to me)

Shit happens when you win championships

If you are right

It’s going to be a long year.

by Rolo on Jul 23, 2010 4:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Well

It comes down to how much separation you put between the groups. Right now, I’d say the dropoff starts at quarterback, simply due to lack of experience. If Webb or Pick steps up, though, I think we could be alright.

My expectations for this season are low simply because this was always going to be a rebuilding year even before the coaching change, IMO.

It’s too bad NU/CU are leaving after this year. If we could develop key pieces this year, we could have made a nice run against that softer schedule next year. Instead we get the entire Dirty South.

That schedule is gonna put hair on our chest fast

Really the whole North is going to be in for some pain when that happens. If you look at the numbers regarding Texas and Oklahoma, and to a lesser extent Texas Tech of late, every North team will likely have two losses at a minimum when the season starts

Shit happens when you win championships

by KU Grad 08 on Jul 24, 2010 10:50 AM CDT up reply actions

Without seeing any of the summer arrivals yet...

OL (depth a problem, but starting five is our only strength IMO)
RB
WR/TE
LB
DL
QB
DB (prove me wrong for once)

by jayhawk79 on Jul 25, 2010 2:50 PM CDT up reply actions

I think its a bit unfair to blame all the past defensive problems on the DB

Its hard to cover guys for 10 seconds. A better pass rush would help a lot. This next season with younger guys that should be better a la Lubbock Smith and the depth and experience at Corner, I think this unit could be pretty darn good

Shit happens when you win championships

by KU Grad 08 on Jul 25, 2010 4:25 PM CDT up reply actions

It wasn't just the deep routes

That our secondary couldn’t defend. Slants, curls, screens…you name it, they couldn’t stop it. A good part of it was coaching, but the majority was an inability of many a DB to actually turn around and look at the ball when it’s coming their way or be able to keep up with faster receivers.

I’m praying that we’ll have some great blitz packages to make up for those deficiencies in the secondary.

by jayhawk79 on Jul 25, 2010 6:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Well blitz packages might not be the solution...

Even when we blitzed last year it was usually picked up or ineffective, and then our corners are on an island. I think every part of the defense needs to step it up, but its hard to blame it all on one unit. Especially when there were times last year when the other team’s quarterback had 10 seconds to throw.

Hopefully more experience all around and now having a defensive coordinator who isn’t as young as I am and actually knows what he is doing will help.

Shit happens when you win championships

"Even when we blitzed last year it was usually picked up or ineffective"

Precisely why I’m hoping Torbush has better ideas than Bowen/Miller. Because I don’t believe we have even an average secondary. Sure the DL couldn’t break through enough, but there were times in every game where it would’ve been smarter to line up six DL, four LB and Stuckey than the traditional sets.

by jayhawk79 on Jul 25, 2010 11:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Someone explain

why you guys think RB is such a strength.

We’ve got one proven RB (Opurum) coming back from a major injury. We’ve got one old RB who could never shake the fumblitis (Quigley). And we’ve got one RB with questionable work ethic (Lewis).

That leaves unproven freshman and redshirt freshman.

by Rivethead on Jul 26, 2010 7:36 AM CDT up reply actions

there really isn't a lot proven on this team...

I'd say depth and options

We got different guys who can do different things, big backs, fast backs, etc. With Opurum, Quigs, Lewis, Sands, Bourbon and Sims I’m optimistic we’ll get production out of this group

Shit happens when you win championships

by KU Grad 08 on Jul 26, 2010 12:10 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't necessarily think it's a strength

But we’re in better position at RB than most other units. It’s going to be a rough season, but the future at RB is bright. A returning RB with 8 TD and a couple highly-touted freshmen is more than we’ve had going into a season since Cornish was in town.

I think I’m remembering his name correctly . . . that walk on fullback from Hutch?

show up on the roster yet. The name is correct and I do expect him to be there.
