It is confirmed that Jeff Spikes injured his achilles tendon and will be out for the season.
It says that he will apply for a medical hardship in order to have 2 remaining years of eligibility. That leaves a soph & 2 RS-F to back up the OL - after Thorson gets back from his broken foot and Hatch heals. That's lookng mighty skinny.

How bad is this situation really?
I agree that we never want to see a player go down and I love Spikes I think he is a great player, but looking in the grand scheme of things it will allow some younger guys to compete for reps. They are going to try harder get better and probably get some game time experience all while having a great line in front of them. Instead of waiting a few years to be thrown into the fire they are going to get a little taste of it this year. This could be a blessing that we don’t know about.
The loss of depth
and 2 years of starting experience is never a good thing…

I don't know about a blessing...
but I guess that if the injury had to happen, I’d prefer it happened like this in the offseason where the younger guys get reps from the start of fall practice. It’s definitely better than a starter going down 3 games in. Hopefully the young guys can step up and take his place without missing a down. Who knows, maybe it’ll be easier to develop a young guy into a rushing blocker than it is to convert a pass blocker.
Not good,
but it could be much worse. I don’t want to jinx it, but we have more depth and experience on the OL than any other position. If we had to lose a great player for the season, it’s best that we lost them from an experienced unit.
We have good experience returning to the OL
but we have NO depth with ANY experience at all on the OL. At this point, I don’t believe we even have enough bodies to fill an entire 2nd string.
I like our experience WHEN Thorson and Hatch recover, but our depth is entirely redshirt and true freshmen. That is most definitely not more than any other position on the team. Check out the LJW article today on RB’s. http://www2.kusports.com/news/2010/jul/14/running-backs-unproven-ku/
We have as many bodies at RB as we do at OL, and only need 1 or 2 starters vs. 5. Oh, ya, and the RB’s w/o experience are much more highly rated than the new OL players.
