You Think Losing Reesing is Hard
There are some big-time college quarterbacks that went pro this last year. While we are sitting back and wondering who will start at Quarterback for the Jayhawks next season, other schools have to think about the same thing. Two of those schools have some mighty big shoes to fill. Reesing owns every Kansas passing record and is in the discussion for best QB in KU history. (see: Owens Post) However, Kansas was not the only program to lose a historic QB. Texas lost Colt McCoy, the QB with the most wins in college football history and over in Florida they might have the toughest shoes to fill since Alexander the Great died. (I was going to write since Muhammad died but then I remembered that he, like Jesus, ascended to heaven) So, I submit it to you.

I don’t know that you can put Jones filling in for Bradford in here because Jones started most of the season already. I actually put my vote for Gilbert filling in for McCoy because Gilbert was unknown before the NC last year. He has one game under his belt and it may have already been the biggest of his career. Thats hard to handle. I also gave the vote to him because everyone already knew and still knows that Brantley is great. He was probably the best back up QB in the nation last year. To be honest he is a better true QB. He does not have the leadership Tebow did, but pure QB ability Brantley is actually better, so I had to give the hardest shoes to fill vote to Gilbert.
While Gilbert does have big shoes to fill,
at least Texas fans have some sort of idea of what he can bring to the table. After last year’s NC game, they have reason for optimism.
Brantley hasn’t received much PT, but when he has played, he’s actually done decent while in mop up duty. As a junior, I think he’ll do just fine.
I decided to vote for Webb/Pick.
My main reason is that KU has not replaced a quarterback successfully before. McCoy was good but don’t forget he replaced Vince Young after he won a Texas Championship. Tim Tebow replaced Chris Leake after Leake lead Florida to the National Championship game. No KU quarterback had ever won a BCS game until Reesing. Tough shoes to fill indeed!!!
My order is
1 – Tebow
2 – Reesing
3 – McCoy
UT has the solid structure around to ease a QB into the system (good OL, running game, defense that can bail the O out if need be), though the pressure-packed UT Football atmosphere is nothing to shake a stick at.
Reesing spent 3 seasons making something out of nothing; granted he had a mixture of good receivers and running backs at times, but for the most part it was his accuracy and broken play ability that made the team run.
Tebow, on the other hand, was basically Florida’s entire offense. Maybe the running game would have been more productive if they’d needed it more, but basically Brantley is trying to replace the team’s best passer AND best rusher.

Another vote for Webb/Pick
Texas and Florida have assembled some of the best recruiting classes in the nation year after year for the last 10 years or so. While a quarterback is important to anybody’s system I think that the superior offensive line play, good running game, and stellar WR corps at Texas and Florida tend to make a quarterback look pretty good. I think both Tebow and McCoy are pretty good quarterbacks, but I think Reesing would have looked just as good running either of their systems.
Reesing dodged defenders and made circus plays for us on a regular basis. Considering his supporting cast, our offense under him was simply much better than it had any business being.
Most people will downplay his abilities because he wasn’t playing for one of the giants of college football. The fact is that the giants tend to recruit guys that are not only good at this level, but have NFL potential as well. In a Bizzaro world where a 5’10" guy has NFL potential Reesing would now be a proud graduate of the University of Texas and would be going down in their history books as one of their best ever.
I’ll go with Gilbert. The expectations at UT and UF are both much much higher than at KU, so Pick/Webb won’t have near the pressure.
Florida has so many great offensive weapons that Brantley shouldn’t have much trouble. Just toss a WR screen out to one of their 4.2 forty guys and let them do all the work.
Texas hasn’t had as much talent recently, IMO. Outside of Colt, they haven’t had a running game in two years, really. I assume they will make adjustments to their offense, but the UT offense demands more from the quarterback than UF did with Tebow, IMO, because Tebow could dink and dunk and have his guys do all the work for him.
So Gilbert is placed in the tough position where expectations are still sky-high (anything less than ten wins would be a failure), but without as much help around him. That’s gonna be tough.
Other new QBs in tough spots: Ole Miss, Oregon, ND, Central Michigan, and BYU
