Report: Nebraska and Missouri Have Until Friday to Make a Decision
It's just a report, but it is on ESPN so I figured I'd throw it up here. According to said report, Nebraska and Missouri have until 5 PM on Friday to make a decision whether they will be leaving the Big 12 Conference or not.
Maybe the process will be escalated sooner than we thought.

Saw this earlier this morning,
I guess this could mean two things. One, if Missouri and Nebraska jump then we should expect the schools to the south to jump ship as well. If Missouri and Nebraska are staying, we should expect the schools in the south to stay. Outside of those two scenarios, I don’t see how this deadline makes any sense at all.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

Meanwhile...
…K-State and KU (and Iowa State and possibly Baylor) sit on the sidelines, watching it all unfold.

You mean
while K-State holds KU back in any future deal with the Big 10 or Pac 10, right? I guarantee you that KU is not sitting back and watching this all unfold. K-State however, doesn’t have a choice. They have nothing to offer one of these conferenses… unlike KU. But that’s just my opinion…
links and a copy of my letter to KBOR
here you will find both a form to e-mail the KBOR directly and a link to their Facebook page.
http://maps.kansasgis.org/demograph/ims/myelect.cfm
here you will find a map to where you can find all of your elected officials.
I would encourage each and every one of you to copy and paste the text below to the KBOR and your elected officials:
The recent events unfolding in the Big XII have me very concerned about the future of the state’s two BCS-level institutions. Specifically, there is a not insignificant chance that Kansas and/or Kansas State could be left out as a 1st-tier (BCS-level) academic institution, with the possible realignment/ expansion of the Big 10 and PAC-10.
One thing that makes this possibility more likely is that there is a feeling that the KBOR and the state legislature would not allow the two schools to “decouple”, in other words be allowed to accept invitations to join from separate conferences.
This policy (perceived or real) could severely limit either school from remaining as BCS-level institutions, should the Big XII fail to continue to exist.
I would strongly and respectfully ask the Board, should the situation arise, to allow these two great institutions to pursue their own opportunities for conference affiliation.

Man, you guys are being harsh on KState
I have yet to see any evidence that KU isn’t getting rumored interest from other big-time conferences because of KState. They make a nice scapegoat I suppose, but it’s silly to start some kind of petition campaign.
BTW, I once was an intern for Dennis Moore in DC, and those petitions are used all the time and accomplish nothing (except create busy work for some college kid). The Board of Regents will never see you emails.
If Tech and OSU are getting interest, there’s no reason KState can’t get some, too (except for their tv market, unfortunately).
Maybe a better strategy would be for KU and KSU to start talking constant trash about Texas in an effort to create a last-minute intense rivalry.
Texas is a sissy state. “Everything is bigger in Texas” because they have to compensate for their tiny penises and barely-functioning brains.

it's better than nothing
and us sitting around with our thumbs up our asses while we wait for other people to decide our fate.
i have no idea whether or not KU is even being considered for another conference, but if we are, we should seriously consider it, and if (IF) some tie-in with KSU is preventing that from happening, that’s just wrong. this is not meant to scapegoat anyone, but I don’t want to see our opportunities limited because of some supposed tie to KSU, or some policy or rule that says the two teams have to be in the same conference. KSU is more than welcome to pursue their own BCS or mega-conference opportunities as well; more power to them. at least get the attention of the people who may or may not be in a position to allow or block such a move.

Agreed.
The reason Kansas isn’t of interest is, most importantly, due to the lack of televisions that would be obtained by grabbing us and two, lack of a prestigious/incredible money-making football program.
The only way Kansas State hurts us is that they bring no more to the table than we do. We equally hurt the other, with neither school being a big enough prize to be of too much interest to the other conferences, much less taking two.
No, Kansas State doesn’t help us. But it isn’t like if K-State was entirely out of the picture we’d be guaranteed get a bid to Pac 10/Big 10/whatever.
Yeah I don't see KSU hurting KU
In a scenario like this, another in-state school could HELP you (see OU and OSU) but I doubt it HURTS you
Shit happens when you win championships
To cover up his ass
In case he can’t get us to a super conference he can turn and say "well blame KState, we got tied with them and thats what kept us out’
Shit happens when you win championships
OSU and Texas Tech are being offered spots because Oklahoma and Texas are requiring it.
That is it. As much as I love KU, it is not Oklahoma Football or Texas anything. We can’t pull that kind of weight. OSU, Iowa St., Baylor, K-State, Texas Tech, Colorado, and Missouri are all about the same size’s in their athletics. KU is bigger than them, but smaller than the next tier. Oklahom, Nebraska, and Texas A&M are really big. Texas is unreal.
Let me make this clear. K-State has not hurt KU, yet. We have both developed as Universities under the old way of doing business. The business climate is changing though. Forces outside of our control are changing the face of college athletics. Whether K-State is helping or hurting KU. I don’t care. Basically that is my position. Right now. I don’t care about what happens to K-State. KU needs to do whatever it takes to excel.
I'd like to know
what kind of teeth are backing up this so-called ultimatum. If it’s just some portion of the tv money over the next two years, it’s not really much of a threat. They already have that provision in the Big XII agreement. If Nebraska and Mizzou tell the Big XII they’re in by Friday, but change their mind later when ND turns down the Big 10, what’s really going to happen?
When is Late Night?
Latest out of the Pac10 saga...
Texas schools want Baylor in over CU….and the Pac 10 is concerned with both Tech and Okie Light academics…might the door be cracking open just a bit for KU? I don’t even know what to believe with all this stuff anymore.
53 Conference Championships!! and now 6 IN A ROW!!! Holy Hell...Good Luck with That!!
I know what to believe...
All this conference expansion talk is just a big nightmare. And here soon. I’m goin to wake up and everything will be OK. Well atleast that’s what I wanna believe ha ha.
I don't know about you all,
but I’m starting to get a very bad feeling about all this. I don’t see this ending well for KU. I just don’t. We’re basically dependent (1) on Notre Dame joining the Big 10 and (2) Texas deciding to stay in the Big XII. I’m just not that confident either of those are going to happen.
I’ll be the first to say it, then:
We’re gonna get screwed.
When is Late Night?
agreed...
best thing for Kansas is the whole thing stay as is. Guess we’ll know a little more next week
53 Conference Championships!! and now 6 IN A ROW!!! Holy Hell...Good Luck with That!!
I disagree we need to be the Leader.in our destiny
We have been shown our BB prowess means sheat in the media and $ world.
If Tx, I mean the big 12 decides that they will destoy what saved them in the scandals that destroyed the swc then we need to move on, I will be OK if the MWC can expand and get a bcs/TV $ relative contract to what we have to keep Coach Self and not drown with the new contract for Coach Gill. Even better would be if we could join the SEC and dominate in BB and hold our own in FB. Being a West Coast HS player, I believe we would be a top third FB team in the pac 10 if Gill doesn’t tank this year. We need to show we are worth something and noti in need to grovel after the 12 is broken up.
A Couple of things give me hope
1) Texas could make serious bank with their own TV network. If they can make more $ than what they’d get from the Pac deal, then there’s no reason to increase travel expenses, deal with scheduling across three time zones, and make it more difficult to reach BCS games by adding teams like USC and Oregon to their schedule.
2) If the Pac Ten becomes the Pac 16, every other conference out there will want 16 teams, as well. That creates so many openings I have to believe that KU would fit in somewhere.
3) If we are left out in the cold, Lew will be looking at ways to maximize our basketball earning potential. You don’t do that by joining the MWC in hoops. You do that by playing up your former Big East ties to create an extremely strong and profitable hoops conference that gets plenty of attention from East Coast media outlets.
4) The ACC’s expansion was only a couple of years ago. So even if we were to miss out on this round of reorganization, we’d still be in a good position for the next go-round relatively soon…and there will be a “next go-round.”

I absolutely agree that is the best thing.
It’s not going to be what happens though.
Anyone Have Any Idea If This is True?
http://twitter.com/DanWetzel/status/15592552977
Yahoo’s Dan Wetzel is claiming that there’s already a Kansas state law requiring KU and KSU to stay together? Bensa, figure out if this is true for us?
Link's broken...
…but I looked up Wetzel’s Twitter account, and I don’t see anywhere on there where he says there’s a Kansas law that requires K-State and KU to remain together. He links a CJ Online article wherein a KBOR member says K-State and KU will remain together, and he also tweeted “On KU, KSU deal. Was told by someone who would know. Obv I’m not an expert in Kansas law, so shouldn’t have tweeted it.” This isn’t in any way legal advice or a legal opinion, but I would just about bet my bank account that there is nothing in the Kansas Statutes that states K-State and KU must be in the same athletic conference.

I did a quick search on LexisNexis
and wasn’t able to find such a statute. Not saying it’s not there, but I didn’t find it in a cursory search.
When is Late Night?
The link's broken because he deleted the tweet . . .
Instead, he replaced it with this:
http://twitter.com/DanWetzel/status/15599085185
“On KU, KSU deal. Was told by someone who would know. Obv I’m not an expert in Kansas law, so shouldn’t have tweeted it.”
I would certainly hope that the Kansas Legislature has better things to do with its time than bind two schools together that are already permanently linked—even if KU and KSU separated, it’s not like we’d stop playing them in just about every sport possible.
If this really is KBOR policy, what steps are they undertaking to improve the marketability of the two programs? Are they working to get KSU fully accredited and out of Tier 3? Are they allocating funds to do a PR campaign on why a superconference should bring in the Kansas Sampler? Or are they really willing to sit back and potentially hurt both schools because they think they have a lot more leverage in this whole situation than they actually do?

OT
Denver-
It may just be the mobile site, but the background is all screwed up for me. There’s two bright green vertical lines on the sides that say “Clear” on them and have odd-looking pictures behind the text. Or am I just having a flashback?

I have the background but...
it’s not interfering with the main content text/pages so it must be a mobile deal.
53 Conference Championships!! and now 6 IN A ROW!!! Holy Hell...Good Luck with That!!
I see the deadline....
but what are the ramifications if they don’t say anything? I guess maybe I missed something but do they get booted if they don’t reaffirm their commitment?
53 Conference Championships!! and now 6 IN A ROW!!! Holy Hell...Good Luck with That!!
2 KC news stations last night said
MU and NU cant be kicked out till 2011-2012 school year
by Bestofthewest on Jun 7, 2010 9:16 AM CDT up reply actions
so they would really kick them out???
I find the ultimatum pretty ridiculous. It doesn’t appear to have any teeth if you ask me. If I’m Nebraska or Missouri and I truly have a Big 10 offer, you can bet your ass I’m not reaffirming anything come Friday.
53 Conference Championships!! and now 6 IN A ROW!!! Holy Hell...Good Luck with That!!
I wish i knew
but they didnt go into detail, just saying they couldnt be booted till ’11 or ’12. And I agree its ridiculous. But they also reported as fact that ND AD was at the Big10 meetings, so its anybodys guess. And I keep seeing everywhere that MU NU have been giving the big 10 the eye. So what if they are, they would be dumb not to look and listen and think long and hard about it. But hardly anybody in this conference has balls to stand up and give texas the finger, and say shut up and fuck off. When we all know texas has had direct contact with the big 10 as well, they just havent said anything about it.
by Bestofthewest on Jun 7, 2010 9:47 AM CDT up reply actions
it's funny how sticky the situation is...
and how a few schools seem to have all the power. I agree though in the fact that MU and NU should definitely listen and hell if offered…then I’d give the big finger and walk. The Big 12 just looks like a dead man walking right now.
53 Conference Championships!! and now 6 IN A ROW!!! Holy Hell...Good Luck with That!!
This. I'd say "we're staying"
unless there’s a huge financial penalty and walk if the opportunity arises.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball...Rock Chalk Talk
lose-lose
Unfortunately, too much of this conference has been built upon keeping Texas happy because they’re the big money-getter. I can’t say that I blame Nebraska and Missouri for wanting to look elsewhere where they might be on equal footing with every school in the conference. I know as a Jayhawk I wish the entire conference landscape wasn’t shifted toward the south. I see this shaping out one of two ways
1) The Big XII does everything in its power to keep Texas in the conference to keep its cash cow, neglecting the other 11 schools. Missouri & Nebraska are finally fed up and leave, conference disintegrates.
2) The Big XII tries to accomodate Nebraska & Missouri, Texas loses revenue and bolts for greener pastures, conference disintegrates.
Kansas loses in both instances, I hate to be a pessimist, but I just think the Big XII has painted itself into a corner and Notre Dame joining the Big 1(1) with no further expansion is pretty much the only situation I see where Kansas remains a BCS school. Time to earn that money Lew…
