One more night, one more game, one last chance for the Butler Bulldogs. Some say don't call it a Cinderella, but what else could it possibly be. Duke takes on Butler tonight for all the marbles. Does Coach K get the Blue Devils back to the top after a nearly 10 year absence. Or does Butler crash the party and change the way we look at the "mid major".

if Duke wins. I’ll be pretty disgusted if Butler is crowned my “national champion” for the year, too. So, it’s really a lose-lose tonight.

Rooting for Duke
seems like cheering for the people in the investment banking business to make more money. I don’t particularly like Butler’s style, but there seems little choice tonight. (Except for Labba! It’s OK if he makes lots of money, as long as he donates it all back to KU. :)

I love Oregon
The people there have such an inflated opinion of themselves. They think they should be Kansas in basketball and Alabama in Football. And there neither, they just have a rich alumni.
As for Brad Stevens, I can’t see him going there. No of local recruits stay in Oregon (see: Kevin Love) and that can be a fish bowl of an environment. He would be wise and stay at Butler.

considering the level of recruits both schools go after, you would think there would be more conflict.

When Roy was at KU
we seemed to go after more of the same recruits. Since Self arrived we haven’t had so many common targets. I think that’s more because Duke has restricted it’s recruiting a bit, and are trying to get more players who they think won’t jump to the pros early.

I honestly don’t know why he would leave Butler. At least don’t leave yet. They got an honest chance to crash the party again next year (and if they went 30-4 again they’d get a better seed after what they did this year) with a lot of talent.
I’d stick around one more year at least, make one last run. Money and a lucritive job will still be there for him next year, possibly one better than Oregon (UCLA anyone? Kentucky after Cal goes to the NBA or resigns amongst scandel?)

this all lined up so perfectly for duke, it’s really a shame that they won this thing. ever since stealing the 3rd no. 1 seed, we shoulda all seen this one coming.
when you look at the 6 teams they beat, it’s a pretty weak resume… purdue was clearly not better than a top-30 team after losing hummel, california was coming out of the worst pac 10 league of all-time, and butler shot 40% or less in half of their tournament games, including the championship, where they still managed to come within 2 close misses of beating Duke….
very unimpressive overall.
not to mention, Duke doesn't even have a single NBA player on that roster...
Scheyer shot under 40% FROM THE FIELD in 3 of his 4 college seasons, including his senior year.
Nolan Smith is basically an undersized shooting guard who can’t shoot. No chance for him.
Singler is laughably considering foregoing his senior year to get drafted at the end of the 2nd round and punch his ticket to the D-League.
They did something right though.
As crappy as it seems, Duke was loved all year by Pomeroy. Coach K is doing something right in the college game.

basically he recruits smart players who don’t have the talent to jump to the league early. Duke ends up spending 2-3 years getting bounced from the tourney the first weekend, but then next thing you know, he’s starting 4 or 5 upperclassmen who’ve been spending 3 years perfecting his system, and it allows him to go for the knockout punch every 4th year.
I'd have no problem with Kansas employing that strategy.

a lot of people are already considering this duke team to be up there with that last maryland team to win it as one of the worst champions ever. IMO, the level of competition they played against is the biggest reason they won this thing. other than perhaps WVU, did they beat a single team that appeared to have elite talent? when was the last time a team didn’t beat a single 1-seed on their way to the title?

UNC beat the following seeds last season: 16, 8, 4, 2, 3, 2 en route to their championship.

for starters, you can’t compare the seeds, because the 2009 versions of Oklahoma, Villanova and Michigan State would’ve all been #1 seeds in this year’s tournament.
and we’re talkin about a UNC team that had 3 first-round picks and 2 future 1st-rounders on it if you count Ed Davis and Dejon Thompson… last year’s UNC team and the final 3 teams they beat would’ve all mopped the floor with the 2010 Duke team.
I guess I don't understand why the NBA prospects should have anything to do with this year's team.
They won the thing. Kansas, who has multiple guys who will get a paycheck for at least a year or two got beat by Northern Freaking Iowa.

I didn't compare the two teams.
You did, by asking the question. I only answered the question. Do I think this Duke team is better than UNC last year? No, I do not. Just as I don’t think last year’s UNC team was better than KU’s 2008 NC team. I’m just saying that Duke was generally underrated this year, and, although they received a very favorable tournament draw (as you’ve pointed out), is a legitimate national champion.

I think Scheyer had a great season this year. Singler is an NBA player a la Mike Dunleavy/Wally Sczerbiak, and Nolan Smith had a great tournament and would be wise to leave early now. Zoubek also had a decent year and will likely make an NBA team somewhere. Hey, if Luke Schenscher (from the Ga. Tech team that made the championship game a few years back) can make an NBA team, Zoubek sure as heck can.
I just don’t think you can say there isn’t a single NBA player on that roster. I count 4, maybe 5 at least. Not All-Stars, of course (though Smith reminds me a lot of Ben Gordon, though he’s not quite as good a shooter), but solid NBA players.

but Zoubek is 7’1", so I’m not sure it’s a compelling difference. Zoubek also weighs more than 195 pounds, which I’m not sure Schenscher did.
