BIG 12 TOURNEY PICK EM

It's March. You all know what that means: brackets, baby.  And what better way to get warmed up for the big time than a run through this weekend's games in Kansas City?  The Big 12 tourney always seems to have a couple of surprises up its sleeve.  This year, no Big 12 team seems realistically on the bubble right now, which means the only thing to fight for is higher seeding (or for one of the bottom 5 to make a Cinderella type run to the automatic bid). Put on your picking pants, ladies and gentlemen.  It's March. Let's dance.

Star-divide

First, of course, the bracket:

WEDNESDAY:                      THURSDAY:                       FRIDAY:                    SATURDAY:

#8 Colorado

#9 Texas Tech                      #1 Kansas

#5 Missouri

#12 Nebraska                      #4 Texas A&M

                                                                                         SEMIFINALS                  FINALS

#7 Oklahoma State

#10 Oklahoma                    #2 Kansas State

#6 Texas

#11 Iowa State                    #3 Baylor

Sorry for the poor formatting.  A nice copy of the bracket  can be found here (warning: PDF file):

http://www.big12sports.com/fls/10410/championships/pdfs/2010_mbasketball_bracket.pdf?DB_OEM_ID=10410

The scoring system shall be this:

1 point for each Opening Round game picked correctly

2 points for each Quarterfinals game picked correctly

4 points for each Semifinals game picked correctly

8 points for picking the correct champion

TIEBREAKING BONUS: Who will be named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player?

A couple of trends to keep in mind:

  • No team lower than a 3 seed has ever won this tournament, but the 1 seed has only won 5 times before.
  • A team that plays opening day has made the finals 4 times in the 13 previous tournaments.
  • Kansas has won 6 Big 12 Tournament titles and was runner-up one other year.

RCT Nation: Post your picks below before Wednesday. Winner gets $1,000 from DenverJhawk! *

So nobody thinks the Corn have a shot against Missouri?

Nebraska hung with Missouri for a good chunk of both contests before being blown out in the last 8-10 minutes or so. Since Safford went away Missouri’s offense has really gone cold. If they aren’t shooting lights out, they have struggled. Wishful thinking on my part? I guess so, or it could just be that I can’t believe the Asian German doesn’t have one big win in him this year.

I picked them to win. So therefore nobody (referencing ALL of us) would be incorrect.

What is with the love fest for Baylor?

Everyone has em going far. I got em losing round one….still not sure if they are consistent enough to get their swag on…time will tell.

They did look good in that drubbing of Tejas the other day

DAY 2 UPDATE

Off the strength of their perfect days, Fizzle and Warden have now moved into a tie for the lead with 10 points apiece.

Low men are at 6, and there’s 8 points up for grabs tomorrow, so anything can still happen!

Based on my picks made here, I’m 7/8. Would that make me the leader at current time? I didn’t pick an MOP, though. And, since me, Warden and fizzle all have the same thing playing out, (KU over Baylor) I guess I would need one.

By my count, you have 13 points heading into the finals. DenverJhawk leads with 17 points.

Oh my gosh...so many people to thank, I'm so nervous...not sure where to start....

I wasn’t expecting this at all, but I did prepare a speech….

First I’d like to thank god for making this possible…without him none of this happens.

I’d also like to thank Doc Sadler for finally pulling his teams collective heads out of their asses for at least one game.

Clearly the Hobbit from Oklahoma State deserves an apology and thanks at the same time as he and the rest of the Cowboys were so good against the Sooners but then tanked it for me against the Wildcats.

While I’m disappointed in Rick Barnes and his decision to yet again fail against Baylor, I think he actually had my best interests at heart and realized the Bears would actually put up a fight and potentially tire out the wildcats where his own team would be far to busy polishing their shoes for the NBA draft.

I’d like to thank Mark Turgeon for coming up short against his alma mater once more, but this time trying to start multiple fights with the Kansas players. An impressive ploy by Coach Self and Turgeon to get the Jayhawks fired up.

A BIG thank you for Kansas State for losing their 34th game against the Jayhawks since the inception of the league. I know they were already making comparisons to the ‘03 football victory over OU in Manhattan before things even tipped on Saturday night, but fortunately Frank Martin and the Wildcats didn’t feel like winning an important game just yet.

LAST but certainly not least I need to thank Sherron Collins for giving me the tie breaker which I wouldn’t need but had in my back pocket should things have gone south somewhere along the way.

For me this was about being GREAT, in the words of Ricky Henderson, TODAY I AM THE GREATEST…you all are just good. It’s hard to stay humble after such a historic victory, but with March Madness around the corner I will refocus my attention on owning the field in that area.

I gladly accept this $1000 check from myself…to myself and with the knowledge that no money has exchanged hands and Rock Chalk Talk can remain solvent.

Special thanks to KG for the contest…and Matthew Abernethy for standing in for me in the photo. Rock Chalk.
