Recruiting Chatter: Darrian Miller Commitment
In the midst of what is probably the most intense time for basketball and an obviously intense week of rivalry matchups, the Kansas football team had a little bit of good news last week pertaining to the 2011 recruiting class.
Early on in the 2011 recruiting process we covered junior day here at RCT primarily on a local level. One such recruit that was clearly an important target for Kansas was Darrian Miller. Miller was one of the players that received an early offer and as we all know Miller had a great junior day visit nearly committing on the spot. This week while attending the Kansas State basketball game with both Keeston Terry and Dexter McDonald he made the call and will be a Jayhawk.
While nothing's official till the ink dries next February, Miller spoke with Rock Chalk Talk briefly about his decision, Reggie Mitchell, Kansas basketball, the new Kansas football staff and some other KC area recruits.
On his commitment, Why Kansas? and ending his recruitment.
"I really left junior day with a good feeling about the program and it was almost certain but I was still somewhat unsure. Then I went up for another trip and got to see the city more and speak with Coach Mitchell more. I felt really comfortable and at home so I went ahead and gave the verbal."
"I think there are opportunities everywhere at Kansas honestly. I could wait a little and then step in or if I keep developing over the next year I could step right in earlier."
"The biggest plus playing for Kansas at the next level is that the program is on the rise and is gonna keep getting better. I want to contribute to that as much as possible."
"I would say it's somewhat of a relief to have recruitment over. I don't really see myself checking too many other schools out. Maybe if a school wanted me to come visit there's a possibility but I don't see myself decommitting in the future."
On his recruitment since Kansas junior day:
"Since the last time we talked I picked up 3 new offers from Minnesota Wisconsin and Louisville to go along with Iowa, Kansas State and Arkansas from before."
"I didn't go on any other visits, but Arkansas was a school I was really interested in as well."
"I was also staying in close contact with Coach Mitchell on a regular basis."
On his recent Kansas visit for the Kansas State game:
"Coach Mitchell extended the invite and Keeston had already told me he was going and then Dexter said he was going too, so we just went up together."
"When I was signing in for my tickets I saw Shane Ray there, but no other recruits at that time."
"The game was fun. The atmosphere was very loud and intense. If the football fans are anything like that then I'm going to be very excited to play for Kansas."
On Bernard Thomas:
"I haven't really been in his ear about it. I don't want to put pressure on anyone but I have reached out to a couple guys. I can't really say if he(Bernard) will be a Jayhawk soon but I think he could help us to a top recruiting class in 2011."
On other KC area recruits, the new Kansas staff, and Reggie Mitchell:
"I've talked to Dan (Tapko), Devonte Majors, Shane Ray, Phil Ford. and I'm going to try to contact Dylan Admire about Kansas also."
"People in Kansas City are excited about the new staff and anxious to see how they do. Personally, I think they will do good."
"He(Reggie Mitchell) is a great recruiter and that's why he has so many good relationships with the coaches and players in the area. I think you could say he's a big reason why there is a buzz about Kansas in the KC area."
On Kansas Basketball:
"Rock Chalk, Kansas basketball is going to the Final Four, Sherron is the truth and let's get it."

I love hearing that!
That’s the main reason I love early commits, especially well known recruits. They sometimes can make players feel more comfortable with a decision than the coaches.
True story.

yep saw that...
I just found it interesting that he was at the Kansas game on Wednesday.
Word is MU really wanted the kid and made that VERY well known on his visit this weekend. Kansas made a run, but I think MU was probably where his heart was early.
53 Conference Championships!! and now 6 IN A ROW!!! Holy Hell...Good Luck with That!!
Tough to compete when...
his dad played for MU. Can’t fault him but I hope he changes his mind. Maybe Miller can talk him into it. If not, Miller might make him look like a fool. lol
I agree,
but if I’m a HS kid and can get free basketball tickets to #2 vs. #5, I’m taking advantage of that too.
who wouldn't...

Good interview
Glad to see kids getting on board with what Gill wants to do.
Insanity is just a state of mind.
Interesting
I believe a lot of coaches will pull an offer if a verbal committment goes on a visit to another school. Coach Gill must not be one of those coaches as Miller is openly talking about visiting other schools “if they wanted me to come visit”.
Denver I hope you tempered his expectations…..KU football fans are not on the same level as KU basketball fans in terms of intesity.
There simply is no substitute for experience.
I'm on board with the football thing now.
that will all change this year now, obviously

Well I wouldn't be terribly surprised...
if expectations haven’t been set with regards to visiting other schools. I’m sure if that comes to pass he won’t be openly discussing it, my guess is he’s just a player very early in the recruiting process and hasn’t had to cross that bridge yet.
I will say that I know Coach Gill has been very low pressure and relaxed with players. He wants them to choose Kansas because they want to be at Kansas and not because they feel pressured. If that perhaps means letting a kid take another visit, Coach Gill might not be opposed. Look at Keeston Terry and his last minute MU trip this winter. Coach Gill sat in his living room right before that trip and didn’t discourage it.
Also At some point you have to be confident with what you are offering kids and not be so afraid of competition. I know you don’t want to openly encourage kids to look around, but if a player says hey I’m pretty sure but I committed super early and just want to check it out to be certain, I think you have to let em. Besides if they want to visit they’ll visit.

Exactly!
If you believe in your product (school) you don’t have to be afraid of others. And why wouldn’t he want to take other trips? Doesn’t the NCAA let them take 5 official visits where the school pays for it? I know if I was offered a free trip with a great game or something happening that weekend, I’d take it. Even if I didn’t want to go to school there. And if he’s already talking to other players trying to get them to follow him to KU, I’m not too worried about the kid changing his mind. Even though it is possible…
