Eyewitness News 9 (NC) Sports has learned that former pirate coach Joe Dooley is in negotiations with school officials about returning to Greenville for a second stint as head basketball coach.
Terry Holland will meet with the media at 6 p.m. but the official announcement could come at any time.
Joe Dooley is currently the Associate Head Coach at University of Kansas.

Hate to hear this for our boys, but you have to be happy for coach Dooley. To have held a staff together as long as he has, HCBS has done well. Coach Jank is, IIRC, the only coach that has left during HCBS's tenure.
Best of luck to coach Dooley. I know he'll do us proud.

Anyone with any names that they think might replace Joe on HCBS's staff?

Not sure if he'll be the direct replacement...
but I’d look for Barry Hinson to jump into a role on the bench with Coach Self.
Also Norm Roberts was the first assistant to leave Coach Self’s staff after one season at Kansas. He was with Self for nearly 10 years but Kansas only one. He’s currently at St. Johns but that seat has gotten very hot, he could also end up back with Kansas.
For Dooley’s part, I heard this was a strong possibility a month or so back. I’m a little surprised, but good for Coach Dooley.
53 Conference Championships!! and now 6 IN A ROW!!! Holy Hell...Good Luck with That!!
I wouldn't mind seeing...
Gillespie, Roberts and Hinson all on staff. I know Gillespie has been hanging around Lawrence a few times this year.

I'm sure he would be on board
What better way to get another shot at a top coaching job than be a leading assistant on a title-contending team for a year or two?
Even though I would think he would be a good addition
I wonder if it’s still a little too close to his DUI, to he a ‘clean’ hire. I’m sure some parent’s or the KU athletic department wouldn’t be too impressed with having him as a role model for their kids. … just saying… Great coach but he comes with baggage now.
I think his history with HCBS
would tend to trump any worries about the DUI. They go way back, Self and Gillispie do. I can’t think of a better “rehab” job than assistant at KU, frankly.
Operation Final Four is a go. Proceed to target.
Thats what I was thinking
The two are real close, etc. Plus he can recruit well and develop players into NBA draft picks (see Law IV, Acie).
However would there be a power clash considering that he was just the coach at a program at the same prestige level as KU? Going from HC at Kentucky to an assistant to a coach you have beaten coaching for another team (our last home loss) and other stuff…could be interesting.
Kind of like how the Chiefs decision to hire Weiss and have him take orders from Haley is going to ultimately end up as a disaster (sorry, but…yeah it is the Chiefs)
I think the big difference
between Haley/Weiss and Self/Gillispie is the fact that Billy Clyde has worked under HCBS before. Sure, he went on and did some pretty good things, especially at A&M (not so much at UK), but I think that history solves any potential problems. That and the fact that Gillispie is currently out of work and probably doesn’t have a whole lot of options for employment right about now.
Of course, it’s possible he stops getting paid by UK if he takes another job, so that may factor into a decision as well. I don’t know if that’s the case, though.
Operation Final Four is a go. Proceed to target.
Yeah thats a good point no doubt
Forgot he had worked under him previously. And how he left Kentucka he certainly doesn’t have a ton of options.
Still, after the job he did at AandM (they went from not winning a league game to competing for the Big12 title within 2-3 years, remarkable) you’d think at least some mid-major who has fallen on hard times would consider him for a head coach position.
That being said, maybe it is easier to get a HC position somewhere being an assistant at a top school (that is going to win no matter what) than trying to rebuild a mid-major team (where even good coaching an better recruiting may not be enough to turn the corner)
I think you're onto something there at the end
If BG comes to KU, he’s virtually guaranteed success. If he goes to a mid-major, it’s really a crap shoot. He could do a phenomenal job and never make the tournament in 4 or 5 years, but at KU, he’ll have lots of success and be on the BCS school short list very quickly, I suspect.

I think sitting next to Self might be better and quicker
My preferences (in order)
1. Norm Roberts – Of course, he has to get fired first. I feel bad hoping for that.
2. Billy Gillispie – Definitely brings baggage but few coaches work harder. The top assistant job at an elite program may be what he needs to get his career back on track. Coaching at a Big 12 school allows him to take advantage of his greatest asset – recruiting connections in Texas. The big question is can he swallow his pride enough to become an assistant after being a head coach for several seasons. Guys like Joe Dooley and Steve Robinson went back to being assistant coaches but they didn’t have a high profile job like Gillispie. Gillispie may prefer to go the mid-major route (as a head coach) to restore his reputation.
3. Some unknown coach I haven’t thought of.
4. Barry Hinson – He’s a great people person but he lacks coaching/recruiting experience at the big time level. Still, if Coach Self was to turn to Hinson I wouldn’t be too disappointed.
I think it's important to note
that if Gillispie were to come to KU, it would likely be a very short term hire. I can’t imagine he would be unsuccessful at KU and thus, would probably be hired away before too long.
Maybe Norm Roberts would be the same way. I don’t know.
Operation Final Four is a go. Proceed to target.
I agree. Gillispie probably wouldn't be an assistant for long.
That’s one reason I’d put Roberts slightly ahead of Gillispie. Still, I wouldn’t be too disappointed in Billy Clyde helping put together a couple of outstanding recruiting classes.
Thanks for sharing the shopping list with us, Mr. Lew.
Glad to know that you’ll be taking the necessary steps to assure Norm “mutually seperates” with St. John’s and comes to Lawrence.

I'd like someone who is really good at developing guards
We got Danny who has done great work with our big men (and really who better to learn from) it would be awesome for someone who is a great developer more than recruiter IMHO. I think with Self and co recruiting is always going to be top tier, and we have a roster loaded with young talent. Be nice to get another guy in who can really work well with players and help them improve, benefit guys like Elijah, Rolls-Royce, Relefunk, etc
Dooley was the best recruiter on the staff, IMO.
He was always considered “The Closer” based on his stone cold Italian mafia look and being able to “apply the pressure.” He will surely be missed in terms of recruiting.

Dooley is also the assistant...
with all the good connections back east. I think that is a void Norm Roberts would fill that Gillispie would not.
So you're getting Norm for us then, right?
You sure tip your hand a lot, Lew. I’d like to take you in some poker sometime.

RE: Gillespie
Greg McDermott’s seat has to be on fire in Ames. If/when he gets canned, how hard will ISU push for BG? That’d seem like a more likely fit for him than as an assistant on our staff.
Maybe,
but remember their coach before McDermott? He had some drinking problems as well. Or was that 2 coaches before McDermott? Anyhow, it wasn’t so long ago, and I wonder if that would turn them off.
McDermott should be OK...
Even though this was what, McDermott’s fourth season, do you really think Gillispie would want ISU job? Plus, I think ISU probably has enough of an investment that they could not make that kind of a move anyway. And they don’t have the problems of Iowa – Steve Alford leading the way down at NM while their program really sucks.
Not sure that you can blame him for
Wesley Johnson transferring, Lucca Steiger flying the coup to Germany and the rash of injuries they’ve had the last year and a half. On paper, they should have been really good. Just kind of a crazy situation up there. I wouldn’t punish him for it all.
That said, good luck to him starting next year without Brackins either…

Maybe you can't blame him completely,
but someone has to be held accountable. I’m not advising ISU let the inmates run the asylum, but these transfers will raise eyebrows. And since he took over 4 years ago, only CU has a worse win %. At some point you’ve gotta pull the plug.
And I’m not necessarily advising ISU to fire him, but I think it’s a possibility. play4’ships makes a good point about the drinking, but it wasn’t drinking that doomed BG. I think they’d take him and I think BG would take it if offered. Why not come back to a conference that you’ve been successful in?
I don't think anyone is taking the ISU job
They are going to be terrible next year. They already aren’t that good and they will be losing their best player and possibly their second best player (NBA draft boards have Gilstrap going around where Collins is projected. He may jump). If ISU loses those two, with the loses they already have suffered…ouch.
Not a whole lot to work with there.
My Choices
1. Worldwide Wes
2. Ronnie Chalmers
3. Allen Iverson
4. Norm Roberts
5. Sherron Collins
Seriously though, I’m betting it’s an up and comer with good connections to top AAU teams.

speaking of Worldwide Wes...
did anyone catch the recent article discussing his move to players agent status? It should be interesting to see how this impacts his role in the recruiting world. You’d think Calipari would have to distance himself from the guy at least a little…then again it is Calipari.

Wait a second...
Wes is going to have an actual job now? Weird. In the past, he just seems to have money occasionally placed in his bank account for being himself…

yep...
read somewhere he’s actually going to be a real deal players agent. Makes all his contact now a big no-no…so I guess that means we can go ahead and pencil in Kentucky for probation and forfeited wins here in the near future.

eh...I think he left the door wide open on that one...
he said both sides were “still gauging interest”. What does that look like? If it has anything to do with a stare down from Coach Dooley I’m guessing he wins.
In all seriousness where there’s smoke there’s usually fire but it seems shortly after the NCAA Title Dooley commented that he didn’t plan on leaving Kansas unless it was for a pretty big gig.
