KU vs Missouri: Plus/Minus
Before the game I said Kansas needed to limit turnovers, keep Missouri off the glass, and contest their shots in order to win. Kansas did two of those three in addition to shooting the ball well and got a fairly easy win. This team is close to playing at their peak right now and we're seeing how far above the competition they really can be when things are going well. Tyshawn Taylor led the way in the plus/minus with a +10, Tyrel Reed comes in at +9. For Missouri, Bowers and Ramsey led the way at +12 and +10. To the rest of the Tigers, thanks for continuing to jack 3's instead of trying to run an offense.

I don't have a whole lot to add today, working on a couple of other posts. So...
- Reed 3-5 from behind the 3 point line. Does Morningstar fall behind Reed in the rotation? Game Score for the last 5 games for the guards below.
- Reading through the game thread, I saw fetch9 ask if the case could be made that Markieff has actually been better than Marcus this year. I'm not here to make the case but I'll present some information and let somebody give it a go in the comments. Below is a bar graph showing the Morri's combined plus/minus numbers for the season. Who is blue and who is red?
- Missouri's 3 pt shooting for the last three games: 4-18, 4-19, 3-22. Yikes.
And to sum up the game, I'm going to quote Bill C. from Rock M Nation:
This game saw four major runs, two from each team. Unfortunately, Kansas showed just how absolutely frightening they are during their runs -- when they sniff blood, they grab every rebound, they shoot about 85%, and they absolutely murder you.
Mizzou Run #1: Mizzou 13, Kansas 5 (put Mizzou up 17-10)
Kansas Run #1: Kansas 18, Mizzou 0 (put Kansas up 42-24)
Mizzou Run #2: Mizzou 16, Kansas 2 (cut Kansas' lead to 44-40)
Kansas Run #2: Kansas 22, Mizzou 4 (expanded Kansas' lead to 66-44)In Mizzou's two runs, they outscored Kansas 29-7. Not bad at all.
In Kansas' two runs, they outscored Mizzou 40-4. Good god.

I must give the MU man credit:
That quote from Bill C. was certainly accurate in describing our success yesterday. We bumbled around at times, but had such brilliant stretches that it put MU in too much of a grave to dig out of.

Agreed.
Sorry for my ignorance…is their a post somewhere that details how the plus/minus is computed?
Thanks,
Warden....???
Carl, I’ll defer to Warden on this he’s got a formula he’s modified and tweaked a little based on reader feedback. He should be able to give you a quick rundown as soon as he see’s you’re looking for it.
53 Conference Championships!! and now 6 IN A ROW!!! Holy Hell...Good Luck with That!!
that'll give some good background...
although I think it’s been tweaked a little bit if I’m not mistaken.

yeah, I think you're right.
It’s still pretty close to the original, though.
Operation Final Four is a go. Proceed to target.
Without reading through that,
the main tweak was the subtraction of only free throw misses now. At the beginning, I subtracted free throw attempts.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.
Looks like he uses FTMiss instead of FTA now
I’m still wrapping my head around it but what I’m thinking it measures is “intelligent hustle”. Good defense plus smart offense will get you points above the baseline.
As I understand it...
It’s not like a hockey plus/minus that simply tracks how well the team does when you’re on the floor. It’s more a measure of the tangible things you did during your playing time with a fairly simple formula- for each “good” thing you do, you get +1, and for each “bad” thing you do, you get a -1.
I believe he changed from FTAs to just missed free throws in part because even if you miss both shots, you have at least drawn a foul on the opponent, which hurts them and helps you. Also, making a free throw should be considered a positive, not a neutral, contribution to the team.
If all you did in a game was attempt one free throw and make it, in the old system you would get a +1 for the point, a -1 for the attempt, and an overall 0 for the game.
Idea for Warden- how “streaky” is this team? Is there a way you can think of to measure this? If there is, how do we compete against SU and UK? My instincts tell me that Kentucky should be the most streaky, since they’re the youngest. But it would be interesting to see what the actual math says.
"Here are our top priorities: recruit, beat Missouri, recruit, win the North, recruit, win the Big 12, and in most cases if you win the Big 12 then you're playing for a National Championship. And then we're going to recruit."

Not an exact answer,
but what’s coming up today will let you look at how up and down this team has been throughout conference play in quite a few categories.
Other than that, pretty solid explanation for the plus/minus.
