Just posted this on another thread, but I wanted to make sure it got read

I spent some time thinking about things (what a surprise). Here’s what I got:
I don’t think this team’s record masked anything. This was undoubtedly the best team in the country, but when you play single-elimination anything can happen. To second-guess games played in January and February doesn’t really seem necessary. We ran into a team that played very well and got the bounces to go their way, and that’s all it takes in a tournament.
What I am left thinking about is the fact that most titles seem to come after crushing disappointments for major players in years past. UNC got shellacked the year before they won, and lost the year before that by giving a game away to Gtown in the Elite Eight. We lost in the Elite Eight to UCLA in a terrible performance, and lost in the first round to Bradley before that. I think even Florida lost in the first or second round the year before they went back-to-back with the same players. Despite the fact that the winningest player in KU history was on this team and a battle-tested Cole Aldrich was on this team, this is still mostly a young team with players that exceeded or met expectations before. Last year was disappointing when we lost, but everyone (players included) knew we had still done more than could have been asked at the start of the season. This year, we didn’t. And those guys will hate that, and use it to fuel their improvement through the summer. I leave you with this quote from Marcus:
“I know I’ll be back next year, and I’ll be a leader of this team next year. Summertime, I’ll work as hard as I’ve ever worked in my life and try to bring a national championship to KU before I go anywhere [else]”

by 2.1 seconds left on Mar 21, 2010 11:23 AM CDT reply actions

I guess when I say it masked some of our problems...

I mean that it made it easy to overlook the youth and a lack of urgency from this team that I ultimately feel did us in. We were the best team in the country, but we didn’t play like it all the time and that killer instinct wasn’t a part of this teams makeup.

53 Conference Championships!! and now 6 IN A ROW!!! Holy Hell...Good Luck with That!!

by Owen on Mar 21, 2010 11:50 AM CDT up reply actions

I disagree with 2.1 a little bit.

There were a lot of warning signs earlier in the year that some of just (ME especially) passed off as a “rough game” or a night where the “shots just weren’t falling” when maybe that should have been a big red light flashing as a warning.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

exactly my thought as well...

it’s like we were sort of lulled into believing the light was going to come on because we kept winning despite the struggles. It made it much easier to ignore the problems as a fan.

i have been thinking the same thing

If this had been the NBA and we play a best of 7 series, Kansas would be the champions. Unfortunatley, that’s not the case.

That is a comment that is rarely said.

It’s normally the opposite.

There's an interesting section in that story about Xavier

And I wonder if King is right that HCBS won’t every be strung along by a recruit with all the drama that surrounded X this year. I don’t think we were a worse team with X by any stretch, but it will be interesting to see if HCBS decides to recruit with an attitude like “We’re Kansas. We’ve got 2000 wins. I’ve got a national championship. You want to play for me? Great. You don’t? Fine. I’ll find somebody who does.”

It’ll be interesting to see what happens from here on out where that is concerned.

Operation Final Four is a go. Proceed to target.

The show goes on...

Time for a Warden11’s Bracket Challenge score update!

There are still plenty of teams left to root for. And for four people in the challenge, that includes a certain team from Iowa. I’m not going to say who these miscreants are but their names rhyme with DCDenver s. tequilaroyal.

Hey

Kansas fan………just wanted to say that I am sorry about the loss for yall last night. I am a Kentucky fan…….we have been there done that before……04 specifically. It is a miserable sick feeling that stays with you for awhile. The team though really has played well all year and truly was at least tied for the best team in the country(Kentucky being the other :) I watched the game and I truly wanted Kansas to win. I just hate it for yall and the players. Keep your chins up though. You still are among the elite programs in the country no matter what happens. Good luck guys!!!!

Thanks a lot

This was an embarrassing loss, but as Kansas fans we have had a few, so I don’t think many of us are spiralling into existential despair like we may have done on the earlier ones. It could be so much worse; we could be North Carolina.

by sax solo on Mar 21, 2010 1:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Lol so true

I’m still so glad we’ve got Bill Self sitting on our sideline next year and not Roy. Bill Slef was pissed about that loss last night, you could see it in the post game presser. Roy would have been crying with tears rolling down his face, bellyaching about the loss. Self is gonna sit down tomorrow and figure out WTF went wrong and is going to use this as ammo to teach next years team how to fight it out.

Thanks for the kind words tenken BTW.

The Midwest region is playing right into the hands on Michigan State now. They look terrific so far against Maryland while Ohio State is struggling against Georgia Tech. Their my new favorite out of the Midwest to reach the Final 4.

I should have picked Michigan State to win the Midwest region. They would have grinded down Kansas down like last year and they know Ohio State really well. Plus for my money, their isn’t a better in-game coach in college basketball than Tom Izzo.

I mean, they talk about him like he’s the next Brandon Roy or something, but I don’t really see it. He seems first round good, but not #1 pick good.

He has awesome size though

A guard who can dribble and shoot and is 6’7 is pretty awesome, especially if he can develop even further. I’d gamble a pick on him, although John Wall seems more likely to produce immediately kinda like how Derrick Rose did/does

Turner’s problem is that his teammates aren’t very good. If he had a point guard like Collins/Randle/McConnell, then he would undoubtedly be the number 1 pick.
