KU's Future.
Right now as a Kansas fan it really hurts. But the one thing I keep telling myself is that sticking with these boys through the tough times will make Championships seem so much better. Right now Iam just trying to quit thinking about this bitter sweet season. And look forward to KU BB next year. I know it seems really early but its the only thing that can relax me. So here are a few thoughts to chew on for next year. I would like to here your thoughts on the matter too. I will go in order of what I think is least to most important.
7) Will X leave for the NBA? To me he should stay because he can improve his game and status overall so much next year. Just look at the Morris twins.
6) Will Conner Teahan or C.J. Henry both get more playing time? The reason I bring up Teahan is because I still remember the always infamous Moody. lol. But with C.J. getting more playing time that could tempt X to come back just like what the Griffen bro did in OK.
5) Will Tyshawn Taylor transfer? Its hard to tell at this point but my guess is he will stay because he became a starter again. But would not surprise me with everything that has happened this year. And with Elija right behind him and looking to make a push for a starting time.
4) Who is going to redshirt? With so much talent on the team and big time recruits always coming in someone will redshirt. My guess would be Withey, Woolridge or maybe even Taylor. I will give my reasoning later on Withey. Taylor could use a year of practice IMO to work on his shot and game in general. And thats not just for todays game. Its been all season. And with Woolridge just too many guards in front of him.
3) With so many guards/SG Taylor, Reed, Brady, C.J., Elija, Releford, Woolridge and not to mention the possibility of either recruits in Brandon Knight or Selby or hell even X. Who are the odd men out? With the chance of nine guards who will play? Another sign that Taylor could leave. Reed and Brady are not going anywhere. Elija and Releford deserve chances to play. Woolridge will prolly redshirt. C.J. I just dont see getting much time.
2) Will Cole Aldrich leave? I know everyone expects him to leave, but with only a semester left to get his degree in college and a not so good offensive year, I believe there is a good possibility he returns for his senior farewell. Another reason I believe Withey could redshirt.
1) Will Kansas play better without Sherron next year? Now I LOVE Collins just as much as the next KU fan but here me out. This whole year has been about winning for #4 has it not? Which is great and all but it forgets about the fact that this is a team game. Not a one man show. Its not the first time Self has done that. (for the record iam NOT a lets fire Self type of person, those people are jokes.) Just look back to the last loss in OK city to a mid major. That year it was all about Wayne Simien. Remember? It was all about win it for Wayne. Sound familiar? Thats my point. Kansas is at its best when its team first, not player. Name me the main player on the 08, 03,02 teams. I just hope that if Cole comes back that its not like this again next year. Because its just not a good formula for winning.
Well those are my thoughts for next year and I would like to here back from you guys. Thanks. Rock Chalk!

Here's my short answers
I suspect X will leave…and the rumor is CJ will follow him.
I don’t see Tyshawn transferring
I’d say no redshirts. Maybe Wooldridge but I’d say no to Withey
Cole has to go in my opinion, it’s been great…but that would be one hell of an unselfish act to stick around. I can’t see him gaining much by staying.
Short answer to the last one is no. Kansas will be minus Sherron, Cole and Xavier…it won’t be easy next year and I don’t think we have ANY leaders on this team as it stands now.
53 Conference Championships!! and now 6 IN A ROW!!! Holy Hell...Good Luck with That!!
Plus Cole
can finish his degree doing independent study and summer classes.

Quick replies-
7) I think Xavier is gone. He’ll be a first rounder and won’t want to pass that up. I don’t think there’s any question he could improve his draft stock by staying another year, just don’t see it happening.
6) Neither will see the court much next year. I’d be surprised if CJ is here at all and Teahan isn’t going to get time ahead of Reed or Morningstar.
5) I don’t see Taylor transferring. It has been a rough year for him but he has to recognize the opportunity ahead of him for the next couple of years. This will be his team and that’s going to make quite a few people uncomfortable around here but I’m excited for it. Maybe I’m being crazy but I’m hoping he stays because I can see great things for him the next two years.
4) Can’t give a good answer here without knowing who stays and who goes but I don’t see Withey doing it.
3) One of the few complaints I’ve had about this season was not getting much of a chance to see EJ play, no clue if he’ll be ready next year. He had times where he looked great and times where looked lost. I’d guess you’ll see a lot of Taylor, Morningstar, Reed, and Releford next year. Little and a Morris could eat up a lot of minutes at the 3.
2) Aldrich has to go. Another year in college will only hurt him in the draft.
1) I don’t think they’ll play better without Sherron Collins. Tyshawn Taylor will have to blossom into a hell of a player to make this happen and I’m not really counting on that.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.
Someone mentioned that they expect T-Rob
To make a similar transition to Cole in 08-09. That would be nice. All I feel I can do is pray X and Cole return.

I believe...
Xavier could gain tremendously and I don’t say that as a selfish Kansas fan. When a guy should go, I’m all for it. I just believe that Xavier is very limited in what he can do right now and at the next level he is a ways from being a contributor.
I also think from a mental standpoint he lacks a lot. Not saying he’s a headcase or anything like that, just that as a high school player in Oklahoma he probably didn’t have to play very hard, very often and with his physical stature things just came easy. At the next level he’s going to be looking at a whole different caliber of defender and if he doesn’t have the intensity or fight in him…it’s going to be an interesting transition.
He can go on potential and things may work out great, but it’s hard to see right now.
53 Conference Championships!! and now 6 IN A ROW!!! Holy Hell...Good Luck with That!!
just put up a long comment on X on the post-game thread
But the short version is this: he doesn’t try very hard. Make it? Miss it? Eh, whatever.
It might be better for him to stay, but I really think it’s probably better for the team if he goes.
I don't believe this.
The game I watched yesterday, X was the one battling for EVERY rebound in the second half. I think he doesn’t show his emotion, which gives off the impression he isn’t trying as hard. But I really feel he is the only reason we were even in that game.
agreed
sometimes he is smooth and it looks easy, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t trying hard

7. Henry is gone. He’s physically ready for the NBA. He publicly said he wouldn’t be in college period if he didn’t have to be. While I think he would benefit from staying, in all reality, it won’t benefit his draft stock too much. He’s still a top 15 draft pick. He’s a 6’6 SG with a sweet outside shot who knows how to use his body on defense and the boards. He is gone.
6. Neither will see more PT. I like Tehan. Know the guy personally. CJ is going to follow his brother, that much should be clear. Tehan won’t ever jump Reed or Morningstar for minutes, and they are his competition. They play the role Tehan would play.
5. Tyshawn will not transfer. My ultimate hope is that he declares for the draft and we can all move on as a program. He’s not a positive for our team. He’s a solid player at times, a talented player, but he’s not a team player. Not everyone is a team player, but if you’re going to start and be a focal point, you have to be more talented than he is to not be a team player. My best guess is that Tyshawn will control the ball a lot next season. How comfortable is anyone with that?
4. The main candidate for redshirts would be Woolridge obviously. We might see Reed redshirt. Withey won’t redshirt, mostly because he can’t. He redshirted last season when he transfered from Arizona. He was a RsFR this year. Redshirting in basketball isn’t that common, it’s not football. Players don’t expect to take 5 years for 4.
3. Tyshawn will start if he indeed returns. That is unfortunate, but that is the truth. If we land Selby, he will at least be in the rotation. We’ve seen this year that Brady and Reed will both be in the rotation. That isn’t going to change. Both are limited, especially Brady, but we play well as a team when they get minutes. If Xavier returns for some reason, he obviously has a starting spot. Releford will likely be in the rotation somewhere. He might start, but I doubt it. If he doesn’t snag the starting spot, he will be at the end of the rotation. Honestly, he might not even make the final rotation. Little is a PF. That’s all he’s played. I don’t expect that to change, and I also don’t expect him to get a lot of PT over the twins and Robinson. Johnson should be Tyshawn’s backup. Essentially, the guards who will see enough PT to talk about next year are: Tyshawn and Xavier (if they return), Brady, Reed, Elijah, Selby (if he choses KU). That’s the guard rotation.
2. I think Cole is gone. I think he’ll give staying at KU a few thoughts, but ultimately, I think he’s gone. It’s the right move for him. I’m going to miss his ability to shut down the lane, but Cole has earned his millions. I wouldn’t be shocked if he came back, but I would be surprised. It’s important to remember that we do have another 7’ HS AA at the end of our bench.
1. I said this last night and I got ripped for it. Sherron has taken a ton of bad shots the past two years, some have gone in. When they do, he’s a hero. When they don’t, we lose to MSU or UNI. Sherron is a tremendous player, one of our all-time greats, but he has the mentality that he alone has to will us to victory. We don’t have anyone on our roster with his talent or leadership, but we will be a better team without him. If you took Sherron off this team before the season started, we would have played as a cohesive unit. The funny thing about this team’s big runs is that almost all of them happened with Sherron on the bench. Usually, our big scoring runs had at least one of Reed or Morningstar on the floor and Sherron on the bench. Sherron will have his jersey in the rafters some day, but we will start playing for the name on the front of the jerseys more without him. That’s just the truth of the matter.

Reed isn't going to redshirt
He was huge for us at times this year. He is like having a reliable kicker in football. No way in hell does he redshirt.

I said he would be the only other option. I don’t think he will, but nobody else in the rotation will. Brady, Little, Releford, and Withey have already used red shirts. The twins have played significant minutes since their freshman year. Tyshawn has started for 2 years and would transfer and/or throw a bitch fit again if asked to redshirt. Those are just the crunched numbers.

As I mentioned below
I think Woolridge will. Talented but very raw. That plus losing CJ will help our crowded guard rotation.

I couldn't agree more on your Sherron analysis
I think you nailed that on the head. I kinda covered some of the same here.
http://www.rockchalktalk.com/2010/3/20/1382698/im-going-to-get-blasted-for-this
I agree
it seemed like we played better more times then not this season when Reed and/or Morningstar were in and Collins was on the bench, even yesterday Collins didnt really show up to play and he was suppose to be our senior leader
My answers
7) Yes
6) No.
5) No. We all keep forgetting that Taylor is only a sophomore. The kid is young, he has a lot of raw ability and time to develop into a very quality player. I still think we all need to give him more time.
4) I think Rolls-Royce will read shirt. He has a lot of potential but is very raw and likely would see the minutes Elijah saw this year at best. Can’t see anyone else redshirting.
3) Certainly will have a crowded backcourt. Right now this is how I see our starting lineup next season:
Taylor
Morningstar (spelled often by Reed, almost a 50-50 here to me)
Little (spelled often by Releford. Releford more athletic, Little the better shooter)
Morris
Morris
(TRob and JDubs mixed in heavily).
Now I think Wooly Mammoth will redshirt like I mentioned earlier. So a big debate could be how does Elijah Johnson fit in? Morningstar will get a lot of PT due to his intangibles and all that and Reed will be literally the only consistent three point shooter on the floor at times (apart from the Morri and Little to a degree). Do we get a big-toime recruit who can do the damn thing? At least we got options. CJ won’t be here so no need to factor him in (which is sad because he could have developed into a pretty solid player)
2) Yes. As Steve Miller and his band once sang: gon take the money and run. Hoo hoo hoo.
1)Now THIS is a brutally good question. I’ve considered posting an entire post about it (that was a redundant sentence). Collins’ toughness, leadership, etc were all huge. However his on-the-court play this past half of the season at times was a hindrance to the offense. He shot very poorly from outside, wasn’t as effective driving to the rim as he was in the past and turned the ball over too often. We will miss him for sure, but I think our play could benefit from NOT having him to rely on. Remember in 2004 when Simien was hurt for some games and we played better overall? Beat GTech and Kentucka. Our team came together and played better. Maybe that happens next year. Who knows.
Shit happens when you win championships
Lineup
Here’s what I see for next year, similar to what KUGrad put together:
Taylor → Elijah Johnson
Morningstar → Reed (or vice versa)
Little → Releford
McMorris →Thomas Robinson
MkMorris → Withey
If we land Selby, he’ll probably share time and not have an outright starting position at the beginning of the season. McMorris will probably play some time at the 3 in a McMorris-MkMorris-Withey/ThRob lineup. Releford might be the odd man out when it comes to playing time. And at times we’ll see TT and EJ in the lineup together, which will push this team into ludicrous speed. /Spaceballs

Screw it.
I want Tyshawn gone. There, I said it.
Taylor has one discernible basketball skill: he’s good at finishing at the basket. He can’t shoot. He gets beat more off the dribble than any guard I can remember in the Bill Self era. He’s been an embarrassment to the program off the court more than once this year. Instead of taking that opportunity to reform and refocus on basketball, he openly loafed through a great deal of the season.
Frankly, I think a lot of the whole “just do enough to get by” attitude this year’s team had came from him. If that’s true, he better not be a team leader next year, or it’ll be a clusterf*ck.
Coming out of high school, Tyshawn knew he had the opportunity to come to a place like Kansas and compete for championships. Instead, he chose Marquette. Marquette has a good program and all, but lets be honest- if you face that choice, you choose going to MU over KU because something besides winning is your top priority. Once Crean skipped town, Taylor made the safe pick and chose a stable program like Kansas. That doesn’t mean he has the right mentality that Self wants in his program, however.
I’m not saying that Tyshawn Taylor is a team cancer, or that he’s a terrible player. But I will say that what he gives the Jayhawks on the court just isn’t enough to deal with the headaches he creates off the court. And there’s way too much guard talent on this team for him to be clogging everything up.
"Here are our top priorities: recruit, beat Missouri, recruit, win the North, recruit, win the Big 12, and in most cases if you win the Big 12 then you're playing for a National Championship. And then we're going to recruit."

As for the questions...
7/2. I think Cole and X will both go pro— even if they don’t necessarily want to. Why? Because there is a very strong possibility that there will be a strike or lockout after the next NBA season, and from everything I’ve heard and read, the owners WILL win. Quite simply, they will lose earning power if they don’t go now.
6. I think CJ will stay, and I think he will get more playing time. I don’t understand the assumption that he’s going to immediately jump when Xavier leaves. He’s got the rest of his life to be X’s wingman. Why even come back to college hoops at all if you aren’t going to give it a real shot? He was one of the best 3-point shooters on the team this year, and I could see him sliding into Reed’s role (with Reed replacing Sherron in the starting lineup). Teahan is a nice local walk-on. That’s all I’ll say about that.
5. As noted before, I think he’s gone. I think Self wants him gone, and will do everything he can to help Taylor get on a team back east. He just isn’t worth the BS.
4. Withey can’t redshirt because he was a transfer. Same with CJ. Brady has already done it. Reed won’t be doing it. I think Taylor will be gone. So your candidates are EJ, Woolridge, and any other freshman we bring on. It worries me that we’re starting to look like a program where freshmen don’t get to play, because that will kill us in recruiting.
3. Knowing Bill Self, there is a zero percent chance that nine guards will play. There’s a zero percent chance of 7 guards playing in the final rotation. Self’s biggest weakness, IMO, is his stubborness. I imagine we end up next year with another 5 guard/ 3 big rotation:
Guards:
Reed
Brady
Little
Releford
EJ or CJ (but not both)
Bigs:
Morris
Morris
Withey or T-Rob (but not both)
1. Look at that lineup I just posted. If you think a team that starts two local Kansas kids and no one over 6’8 wins the Big 12 or only has two losses all season, you have got to be high. No way in hell they play as well next year, unless Self does some serious reorganization of his lineups/strategy.
"Here are our top priorities: recruit, beat Missouri, recruit, win the North, recruit, win the Big 12, and in most cases if you win the Big 12 then you're playing for a National Championship. And then we're going to recruit."

The assumption on CJ leaving...
comes from some fairly reliable outlets saying he doesn’t want to be here. Time will tell but it sounds like he’s ready to move on and would rather work with Xavier in some way. Can’t blame him…the kids played professional athletics, it’s got to be tough to move back to the structure of college.
53 Conference Championships!! and now 6 IN A ROW!!! Holy Hell...Good Luck with That!!
Good point on the lack of Freshman pt...
it’s hurt our recruiting a little bit lately. EJ and TRob were good, but we’re not landing the MAJOR recruits that we’ve been in on since the title.
53 Conference Championships!! and now 6 IN A ROW!!! Holy Hell...Good Luck with That!!
We ARE landing good players though
That with some development can be very good 4-year players in our program.
And not landing Major recruits? Henry was pretty major. I think Self is doing a good job of loading up on 4 year players that are still top-100 talent as well as being in the mix for talented guys that will likely leave after a year or two.
Shit happens when you win championships
by Andrew Clark on Mar 21, 2010 10:22 PM CDT up reply actions
I know we're getting good people...
and good four year guys…but we’ve missed on several big time players due to depth on the interior and at the point with Sherron. As far as Henry…that took a special circumstance.
53 Conference Championships!! and now 6 IN A ROW!!! Holy Hell...Good Luck with That!!
This is true
But you gotta remember, the last knock-out class we had (Chalmers, Rush, JuJu) was because we needed bodies plan and simple. Had lost a lot. Self has loaded up on so much depth and talent we can be more selective. I’d rather have Marcus Morris or Thomas Robinson as a junior than some “stud” post recruit.
Now with the guards I agree with you more, easier to make a quick impact IMHO. Guess we will have to wait and see what happens, especially now that Sherron is gone and Morningstar and Reed are seniors, there will be a lot of potential PT after next season. Really after next year all we will have are Elijah, Taylor and Woolridge… so I’m sure we will be after guards big toime

I'm not so sure I'm as pessimistic about next year as you.
I’m optimistic our younger players will really develop. Look at someone like Elijah Johnson. Could he be as good as Mario Chalmers was a sophomore? Probably not but if he gets anywhere close that is a big lift.
Look at the 2006-2007 team. All Juniors (Robinson, Kaun, Jackson) and Sophomores (Chalmers Rush, Wright) and two decent frosh who played a little (Sherron, Arthur).
Now look at next year’s team: Juniors (Morris, Morris, Taylor if he stays I think he will). Sophomores (The Prophet Elijah, TRob, Withey) plus two senior guards who have played a ton and improved (Reed, Morningstar, also Little to a lesser degree but he showed some flashes last year). Throw in possible stud frosh to see some minutes.
Now that 2006-07 team went 14-2 in a good Big12 and reached the Elite 8. Really played well as a team. Won it all the next year. Looking at next year’s team, I’m not as worried. Players will be improved. There are options. There is the chance for a very solid overall team. Bill Self owns the league. Anything (as we just saw) can happen in the tournament.

I’m just saying that seasons like we just had are INCREDIBLY rare. And I think it would be a disservice to Sherron and Cole’s legacy to assume we can go out there an do it again simply because it says KANSAS on the front of our jerseys. If nothing else, we will be a significantly worse defensive team next year without Cole manning the back line.
I expect OU, CU, MU, and UT to all be significantly better next year, BTW.
