Kansas Baseball ranked #19 by Rivals, Baseball America is less impressed.
Kendall Rogers at Rivals.com ranked Kansas #19 in his top-25 this week. I was surprised to see the Jayhawks left off the Baseball America list. There are a few other polls for college baseball, but I only pay attention to Rivals and BA.
KU swept the weekly conference awards. Casey Lytle was named player of the week and Brett Bochy was named pitcher of the week. Check the comments section below for the full press release. Big congratulations go out to Casey and Brett.
While it is ridiculously early to take RPI numbers seriously, I’ll list the Big-12 ranked by RPI below. It will be a couple more weeks before we should start putting much weight into RPI numbers, but it is fun to see how the season is shaping up so far.
3 – Texas
5 – Texas A&M
23 – Oklahoma
27 – Kansas State
30 – Kansas
54 – Baylor
65 – Texas Tech
101 – Nebraska
126 – Missouri
200 – Oklahoma State
There are a few eyebrow raisers in that list. I am surprised to see K-State so high. Nice to see TTU back in the conversation. The Red Raiders’ program has gone through some lean years as of late. Missouri is a bit of a mystery to me still this year, but they can’t be that bad. Regarding OSU, Whow! The Cowboys will not stay ranked that low for long, but what a horrible first month for them.

There are only a few teams on the BA list that I think are being significantly over rated. It is still early in the year and KU will have plenty of opportunties to make their case on the diamond before the season is over. The two games at Tulane this week are fairly important. Tulane has a good program, but they are struggling so far this season. If KU can take both those games, which will be no easy feat, they will get more notice. KU opens conference play with two huge series – at Baylor and then hosting aTm. Those six games might be more important than KU’s entire non-conference schedule.

KU Press Release
Jayhawks Sweep Weekly Big 12 Awards
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas junior outfielder Casey Lytle and junior relief pitcher Brett Bochy have been named Big 12 Player and Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 15. This marks the first time each student-athlete has been selected to the conference’s weekly awards list.
Lytle, a junior from Phoenix, Ariz., went 7-for-13 with six runs scored and four doubles in a three-game series at No. 1 LSU this weekend, and played stellar defense in right field, making a pair of highlight reel grabs. Lytle had 16 plate appearances in the series with the Tigers, and reached base 10 times (.625 on-base percentage), and scored six runs. Lytle also drove in four runs in the series as Kansas upset the nation’s top-ranked team.
Bochy, a redshirt junior from Poway, Calif., earned a pair of saves in KU’s series victory over No. 1-ranked LSU this past weekend. Bochy was called on to pitch 3 2/3 innings of relief, and he retired 11 of the 13 men he faced, including five via strikeout, allowing no runs and no hits. This season, Bochy has pitched 10 1/3 innings, and allowed one unearned run on two hits with four walks and 19 strikeouts.
This marks the first time KU has swept the Big 12 weekly awards since Feb. 14, 2006, when Gus Milner and Don Czyz were the conference’s player/pitcher of the week recipients.

RPI fluctuation during early season.
Just an example of how much RPI scores can fluctuate during this part of the season, As you know, the RPI is made up of one part the team’s winning percentage, one part their opponent’s winning percentage (minus games played against the original team), and two parts their opponent’s opponent’s winning percentages. So even when a team is idle it’s RPI is in motion.
Kansas State did not play yesterday, but their RPI dropped from 27 to 31. Why? My guess is the main cause was that Harvard lost to Gardner-Webb. This Harvard – Gardner-Webb game is a very easily overlooked game on the national scene, but it had a negative impact on K-State’s season. K-State beat Harvard on March 7th in a tournament in Florida. Outside that game, Harvard was putting together a respectable non-Ivy League season, going 3-2, with wins over Notre Dame, Stetson and Creighton. Harvard’s loss to a bad Gardner-Webb team (RPI 206) sucked a lot of the value out of K-State’s earlier victory over Harvard, and thus … K-State tumbles four RPI notches while the team sits in study hall.

study hall? Come on JQ, it's spring break week!
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.
HEY!
What’s with all this “getting swept by Toolame” business!? I THOUGHT WE HAD A DEAL KANSAS!
Now we’re never gonna here the end of it from the Effin’ Greenies….
