I've got the box score up...

tough to do a whole lot more than that for Colorado and Texas Tech.

I’ll have KU’s game on television tomorrow though.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.

I disagree

I think either an NBA or NHL team would have a hard time sustaining success here. KC is a small market, and with the Royals and Chiefs already here, it just affects the market share that much more.

But my personal preference would be an NHL team. It’s also the far more likely outcome, considering the relative lack of NBA teams that are move-ready.

What's his wiener

want to bring the team to Hamilton. Ain’t happening. I’m actually in favor of contracting the NHL. I think the talent and interest level is spread too thin. When you see what happened with the quality of the play in the Olympics people get a taste of what hockey should look like. Then you turn on the NHL and you get the goonery like what happened to Marc Savard the other night.

Man crush. Sherron.

by labbadabba on Mar 10, 2010 12:28 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think you can contract

there are too many good players without NHL jobs as is to do that. Id be fine with relocating Phoenix, Florida, Atlanta and say Nashville to Northern/Canadian cities though.

by fetch9 on Mar 10, 2010 12:30 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah -

I don’t think it will happen, but given how much the owners raped the players union, who really knows how much power they have any longer. Maybe a Premiership system would be ideal for the NHL….

It’s an AWFUL shame what happened to the Panthers. They had a rabid and loyal fanbase in southern Broward and Dade counties in the 90’s. Then they moved the team out to BFE swampland and yanked the payroll. The fans gave up and the franchise hasn’t been right since. They’ve got a long term lease in Sunrise though, I don’t see them leaving anytime soon.

Man crush. Sherron.

by labbadabba on Mar 10, 2010 12:34 PM CST up reply actions

but honestly,

what additional Canadian cities could support an NHL franchise?

There has been some talk

Amongst Canuks and hockey fans that the NHL should break off and form its own league. Take the Canada teams from the NHL, add 6 or so new teams and have at it. Thoughts?

by Andrew Clark on Mar 10, 2010 12:41 PM CST up reply actions

you'd have the WHA

except in reverse. Something like that is going to be the only way to break up the current course of the NHL. Gary Bettman still hasn’t learned that

a) he’s not David Stern
b) the NHL should be run like the NBA.

Man crush. Sherron.

by labbadabba on Mar 10, 2010 12:44 PM CST up reply actions

But even with that

you’ll have Toronto, Hamilton, Buffalo, and Detroit all fairly close together.

That said, we have the Rangers, Devils, and Iles here which is overkill. The Devils still can’t draw even with the new arena and the Iles unfortunately are hamstrung by a terrible city council and a terrible contract.

Man crush. Sherron.

by labbadabba on Mar 10, 2010 12:42 PM CST up reply actions

Wouldn't a lot of teams close by be good though potentially?

I mean Canadians love their hockey, bunch of teams together could just mean more traveling by opposing team fans, more bitter rivalries, etc.

Thats what works with college conferences here in the United States of America (love using the full title). All the teams are relatively close, people travel to see games, fan bases interact with each other on a daily basis, etc.

I have asked her this question several times

If I remember correctly, the answer I get is that it has to do with Mario Lemieux back in the early 90’s and she just loved him and the Penguins, etc. It IS a bit of a mystery to me, since she’s never lived east of Chicago (and at the time hadn’t lived east of Denver), but that’s what she tells me.

I don’t really mind, of course, though I was a North Stars fan while living in Minnesota, so I didn’t love the Pens for the reasons to which you have alluded, but I always respected their collective greatness, especially Lemieux’s.

I’d love to see Roberts make a little run in the Big East tournament, maybe keep his job for another year. He really needs a little bit of exposure. I can’t imagine how tough it is to take a job at a school like that.

Things aren’t looking good against Marquette so far, though.

guilty

It’s a good point, though. I think having Roberts back would be great. But two other comments on the original Dooley “Back To The Future” post that I think are spot-on:

1. Is there a way to hire an assistant who could do for guards what Danny does for the post men?
2. An East Coast recruiter?

While Roberts probably meets number two up there, he hasn’t been ALL that successful recruiting while even coaching in NYC.

And for the first of the two, I can’t think of a single name. AND, an assistant with the abilities of Danny but not the loyalty to Kansas will bolt as soon as there’s a good job.

I love seeing teams like Georgia last year or the year before or the mid-major with only 9 wins a couple years ago (Oakland?) who ran through its tourney and got the auto-bid.

Remember in 2005 when we all thought we were going to have to play OU again (after we had that epic come from behind win in the phog to win by one, year Chalmers, Rush and co were all frosh) and then the Sooners lost to Nebraska? So then we had to just beat NU (did easily) to get to the finals and avenge the loss to Texas AND WIN THE TOURNAMENT!!!!!!!!

And then…lose….to…..Bradley….team from my hometown….

There's your stat of the day folks....

Nebraska would be only the 2nd #12 seed to win in the Big 12 tournament. For all the hell Missouri fans give us about losing to Baylor…we can point this out.

Just FTR, I did say it:

Texas has to be put in the discussion simply for the fact of the amount of talent they have. If they put it together, they are dangerous and could win the whole thing.

Thoughts...

ISU traveled very well. Had the largest contigent of fans of the 4 teams in the two night games.

What the fuck is up with the sprint center not selling beer at the Big 12 tournament. The worst part is you walk up see tons of beer taps with no labels and just get pissed off.

Without a beer in hand, I get a water. Only bottles, no big deal. Until I learn they don’t allow fans to have the damn cap. Where have you ever seen a place open your water for you and steal the cap?

So OU is getting blown away. Thought it would be nice to jump across the street to Johnnys for a beer, or two. No way, not at the sprint center. No re-adminttance allowed, period.

Parking sucks around there. With traffic took us 30 minutes to find a spot once we were 3 blocks from the place.

Other than that I am looking forward to tomorrow morning.

by KRichards on Mar 10, 2010 11:58 PM CST reply actions

They do this at a lot of concerts, too. Guessing it makes the bottle a lot harder to throw with force.

Its because of the squirt thing you can do with a bottle

We used to do it in high school. WIth a full bottle of water if you poke a hole in the top of the cap and squeeze the bottle it shoots water, pretty decent distance too

by Andrew Clark on Mar 11, 2010 9:11 AM CST up reply actions

ISU has always traveled EXTREMELY well to KC...

I used to go to this tourney every year back when it was the Big 8 and then through the late nineties and the early years of the Big 12. Kansas, OU, OSU, ISU and MU always had the best fan contingent. I suspect with KSU improved they now show up in force, but none of the Texas schools ever turned out for this one…and when they did, all they did was complain that it wasn’t in Dallas.

Pretty ridiculous that they don’t sell beer although I think that’s a NCAA thing if I’m not mistaken. When the 1st and 2nd round games were in Denver two years ago they didn’t see any booze in the arena here either.

by Owen on Mar 11, 2010 7:19 AM CST up reply actions

I'd be curious to know the rules on that,

I know it’s not an all-out NCAA ban (unless it’s relatively new) because I’ve bought beer watching Wichita State baseball games before.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

by Warden11 on Mar 11, 2010 8:11 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah definitely not an all out ban

They allowed beer in designated areas at last years Big 12 tournament. Couldn’t leave the area until your beer was gone, but better that nothing.
