A Random Player Comparison
With the recent discussions in the comments sections about a couple of our beloved Jayhawks, I thought it would be appropriate to take a look at two random players and how they compare to each other.
Player A - Senior Guard
51.3% efG (9th on team)
57.8% TS% (4th on team)
9.1% defensive rebounds (3rd amongst guards)
22.5% assist rate
26.2% TO rate
-3.7% difference
4.2% steal rate (2nd on team, 43rd in nation)
109.4 O-Rating
Player B - Sophomore Guard
49.6% eFG (9th on team)
53.9% TS% (9th on team)
8.7% defensive rebounds (1st among guards)
23.8% assist rate
24.7% TO rate
-.9% difference
2.6% steal rate (5th on team)
104.8 O-Rating
So, player A has player B beat in the shooting categories, a slight edge in rebounding and is a better on ball defender (shown not just by steal%, but in scouting terms he was as well). But player B has a higher assist rate and a lower turnover rate. When you consider they are both ballhandlers, and one is a Sophomore while the other is a Senior, that is pretty impressive.
As you may or may not have guessed, player A is former national champion, current Maine Red Claw, and one of my favorite Jayhawks ever Russell Robinson. Player B is our very own enigmatic Tyshawn Taylor. So while T2 hasn't been perfect, and has looked downright lost at times, he stacks up well to Russ Rob, and still oozes with potential. I vote we all lay off him a little bit.

Yes but...
did a senior Russel Robinson ever hurt the team?
52 Conference Championships!! Holy Hell...Good Luck with That!!
ever? Probably

ok...ever is a bad word...
but I just don’t think Russel as a senior made as many mistakes or errors that affected his team. Is TO% a minutes played based stat?

here is the explanation. You have to scroll down a bit

Interesting that you compare him to RusRob
considering he would be the IDEAL mentor for T2.
Me no likey T2.
I'd like to think T2 has more offensive potential
But if he could elevate his D to Robinson’s level, that’d be awesome.
Insanity is just a state of mind.
RussRob came in as an offensive player/small 2
He totally rebuilt his game to become a defensive 1
Gosh
I didn't realize Robinson was such a horrible player.

your stats don't tell the whole story
Can you count the amount of times that Tyshawn will get the inbound pass race past the entire jayhawk squad and take on the opposite team 1 on 5. His shot selection leaves some to be desired.
well yeah
shot selection is reflected in his shooting percentage

X. Henry.
Well since were on player comparisons. I just wanted to through this out there, maybe its just me. But doesnt X seem to play a lot like J.R. Giddens? Has all this talent but just hasnt really lived up to potential. I have not gone back and looked at the numbers but these two just seem like almost the same player to myself. Just my opinion though. Any thoughts?
X vs JR -- biggest differences
X has a positive mental attitude and has proved to be a team player, JR really didn’t.
X is becoming a solid defender, something I do not recall JR ever being while at KU.
X as a frosh is driving the lanes and crashing the boards, again, IIRC we never saw that from JR.
X’s touch is returning as he develops more confidence in his total game. But like Brandon Rush, he needs to develop his skills with his non-dominant hand so he can go both left and right, not just left. Once he does, look for a big boost in his O production.
