Dylan Admire Talks Kansas Junior Day

Photo courtesy: National Underclassman Combine Website.

Kansas v Texas preview info and stats to come.

This past weekend the Kansas Jayhawk football staff hosted their first of what appears to be two junior day's geared toward giving football prospects the opportunity to get to know a little bit more about Kansas and the football program.  The staff hosted players from Illinois, Missouri and all across Kansas who were in Lawrence taking in the campus, visiting the facilities, seeing what the program has to offer and of course watching the Jayhawks get a win over the Huskers in basketball.

One such visitor that is drawing a lot of attention early on in the recruiting process is offensive line prospect Dylan Admire out of Blue Valley West in Overland Park Kansas.  Admire spent Friday in Nebraska where he received an offer from the Huskers and then made his way to Lawrence on Saturday.  Admire has really seen his stock soar following a strong showing at this years army underclassman combine and while it's still early in the process, it's pretty clear that he's one of the top targets in the Kansas City area for Coach Turner Gill.

Following his trip Dylan gave Rock Chalk Talk a few minutes of his time before settling in to watch the Superbowl.  The Jayhawks will be looking for several offensive lineman with this year's class and Admire will certainly be one we'll be watching here at Rock Chalk Talk.

Denver

Dylan, to get things started why don't you give us a little background on you recruitment to date. When teams started showing interest? How things are progressing now that we're fully focused on the 2011 class.

Dylan

I actually started receiving letters in the spring of my sophomore year. In terms of immediate plans I have four visits set up in the next month and two of them I took this weekend. Those two consisted of Nebraska and KU, both schools made me an offer.

Denver

Talk a little about your Kansas visit. What you did? What you like? How things look for you with Kansas after the trip.

Dylan

I went up for their junior day. After arriving I sat down with Coach Gill and he made me an offer right away. I am really excited about that and Coach Gill seems like a great coach with a great background.

I was very impressed with the facilities and really liked the new academic center; it left me with a great impression of KU.

I also spent quite a bit of time talking to Coach Grimes and he explained what he looks for in a player. He's obviously a great coach with a lot of coaching experience. Last thing I did was attend the KU Nebraska basketball game which was exciting and a chance to see the atmosphere.

Denver

What schools are most involved with you and which ones are you favoring at this point?

Dylan

I'm currently keeping any open. I'm very interested in KU and Nebraska.

One of my teammates Patrick Lewandowski signed with KU on signing day and I'm super excited for him.

The other schools that are involved right now are Kansas State, Missouri, Iowa State, Alabama, Illinois, Notre Dame, Stanford, UCLA, Duke and Washington.

Denver

What would you say are your top priorities when looking at a school and a program at this point?

Dylan

The most important thing to me is the graduation rate because obviously you need to get a degree. My ultimate goal is to play in the NFL, but you have to have a degree to fall back on. It's really important to me how a University is set up to help the athletes succeed academically.

Denver

What do you have scheduled going forward in terms of recruiting? You said you had another pair of visits set?

Dylan

Next weekend I'll be attending K-State for their junior day followed by Iowa State's the next weekend and back to Nebraska for theirs the weekend after that. I also plan on attending some spring games.

Denver

Any sort of timeline for your decision at this point?

Dylan

No, not at this point. I'm keeping an open mind for now.

Denver

Well thank you for your time, stay in touch if you get closer to a decision.

Dylan

Will do, thanks.

pretty sure...

this one is from this past summer, so after his sophomore year. Definitely looks young.

Hard to say at this point.

I do believe that Pat Lewandowski signing with Kansas is a help and I do think he had a great visit. I think more than anything he just wants to take his time and make the right choice. He’ll have some nice offers on the table but I think Kansas can give them all a run for their money with Dylan.

brutal indeed -

I think its time to start going through our yearbooks to remind ourselves that we were all there at some point.

I figured that part of my statement would get picked out.

What I’m getting at is I’m sure we all had pictures of us looking tough (or at least trying) taken of us in HS.

Denver know of any others that attended?

Know that Starling was there but thats it. and if any of the others received early offers like admire and starling received?

by rockchalks7 on Feb 8, 2010 9:20 AM CST reply actions

from what I've gathered...

only Starling and Admire received offers so far. There were a fair amount of others in attendance from across the state, Missouri and a couple from Illinois.

Locally Ben Heeney, Boomer Mays, Lucas Powell, Beau Bell are a few names. Brandon Bourbon was in with the QB from his team who is a junior. There were two others from the St. Louis area as well.

At this point it’s tough to tell which ones will be receiving offers or not, I do have an interview with Heeney ready to go and he’s a potential one down the line that really likes Kansas.

Two HUGE offers!

Admire and Starling would be huge boosts if we could land both of them. I could see Admire getting immediate playing time but maybe not starting right away. Starling would be huge both in football (probably a red shirt in his future though) and baseball. That is if he decides not to jump straight to the baseball draft…

maybe he can pull a CJ Henry

We used to be badass at swimming…now I think we kinda suck at everything. Except having really, really nice cars in our student parking lot.

This is the third or fourth guy we’ve gone after since Gill arrived that has Notre Dame interested I think. How great would it be if we could consistently beat them for recruits?

About HCTG's philosophy

I like that when a kid says “I want to play for a school that’s going to develop me as a football player AND a student” (and implicitly as a human being, I would add), we can think, “Yes, this is how the KU program is run” and be proud of that and proud of the students who want to play here. Not just some football factory where morals are thrown out the window in order to attempt to gain a few extra W’s.
If a recruit says, “Well, I wanted to play for KU, but they don’t win 11 games each and every year”, then I’ll say good luck and hopefully those priorities work out for you. But if he said, “Well, I wanted to play at KU, but I didn’t think they could develop me as a student while I was a player there”, then that would be something for the program (and the fans) to hang their heads about. So good on for HCTG for that one.

not that I'm aware of...

I know of some that would likely commit on the spot but I think Coach Gill and his staff are still doing a little bit of evaluating. Considering they came in so late and have spent the last month trying to put together the 2010 class as well as build relationships on the road, I don’t expect they’ll get to trigger happy with offers early on.
