Going to take some convincing for me to consider them a rival.

They've got one
consistently good player. And, he’s only consistently good when he decides to be so. (i.e. going to the basket and not trying to shoot jumpers.)

More competitive games, yes, ...
but there is a lot more to a rivalry than the scoreboard, tho ESPN would try to tell us otherwise. It was nice to see them recognize the roots of the rivalry before the last BB game, tho they still seemed to whiff on it a bit.
Really?
Better than the game K-State won in Manhattan (or this year’s game) or any games in Columbia? Not even close.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
Dude
KU-UT games have been some absolute classics. They always seem to bring out the best in eachother. Just think of those amazing Big 12 title games.

Anytime two of the same teams are consistently fighting for the best record in the conference and have met in the conference finals three years in a row, I guarantee you the players think of the other team as rivals

This is a good point.
For Collins and Aldrich (guys who have been here and dealt with Texas), I’m sure they consider these guys just as much of a rival as Missouri or Kansas State. As a fan, I just have a hard time getting there yet.

That's the crux of it...
I find it hilarious that ESPN sells it as a rivalry game…when really all they do is check the schedule for Duke/UNC, label it rivalry week and run with it from there.
But over the last 5 years or so, I would absolutely consider Texas our primary bball rival because they’ve been the only team to consistenyl challenge our throne…despite never taking it.

I think it's worth pointing out
that Texas is a Big XII rival. The rivalry wouldn’t exist without the conference association. K-State and Mizzou would still be regional/area rivals even if we weren’t in the same conference (similar to how Iowa St. and Iowa are rivals, or Texas and Arkansas, for instance). To say that UT is not KU’s rival (as some have asserted above, and elsewhere on RCT) is, I think, incorrect. Both KU and UT have consistently been at or near the top of the Big XII every year since 2001 or 2002. Both schools have had a high number of NBA players on their rosters. They compete against each other for recruits on the more-than-rare occasion. And again, KU hasn’t won in Austin in something like 6 or 8 years. Sounds like a pretty good rivalry to me.
Does it have the hatred that K-State and Mizzou inherently have? No, of course not. I think this rivalry is more one of respect than animosity. Not all rivalries have to be based on hatred (though I’ll admit they’re often more fun if they are…).
Operation 39-1 is a go. Proceed to target.
