Here's an AWESOME article on lazy journalism (posted at KUSports). It discusses the Mangino resignation as it's prime example. In my opinion this article really hits the nail on the head.
The key line is here: "What I'm saying is, the university officials openly facilitated and allowed the media to essentially bury this man's reputation for the general public and it allowed them to easily dispose of him, with an ultimatum, "resign or be fired."
KU set a (bad in my opinion) precedent with this, both locally and nationally. Like I stated at KUSports - Coach Gill will need to be constantly looking over his shoulder and behind his back. Mess up, do something Big Jayhawk doesn't like and the media hounds will be unleashed. The truth is only what is defined in the moment.
That's not exactly a recipe for long-term success is it?
