Rock Chalk Talk with Ben Heeney
Junior day for most football programs is an opportunity for many of the local prospects to come in, get a look at the school, and provide an opportunity for the players to get a closer look at the program.
One player that participated this past weekend was Hutchinson safety Ben Heeney. Heeney is a 6'1" 200 pound safety from Hutchinson Kansas. On paper he looks an awful lot like one of this year's outside linebacker commitments in Jake Farley.
Heeney was a part of Hutchinson's state championship team this past season and is beginning to draw some interest from the local schools. He's very familiar with the Kansas program and his name has popped onto our radar here at RCT. Fortunately for us Ben gave a few minutes of his time to recap junior day, early recruiting and his feelings on the Jayhawks.
Ben Heeney Interview 2/9/10
Denver
Ben, first off why don’t you catch us up to speed with your football career, where you play, what you play, how the recruiting has been going at this point and how the Kansas trip went for you.
I play for Hutch high and I play both safety and running back. As far as recruiting so far I already went up to three of the Kansas games this last season for recruiting trips and I’m going to the K-State junior day next weekend. As far as the Kansas junior day trip, the trip was amazing
Denver
Talk a little about what goes on at a junior day? What you did, who you met with etc?
Well first we ate lunch with the coaches and had a chance to talk with them. Coach Gill talked to all of us and so did Lew Perkins. Then we split up into 3 groups and toured the facilities which are amazing. They showed us the weight room, the training room, and the players’ lounge. After that we split into groups by position and went with our position coaches. Then we went to the basketball game and after that was over we toured the academic facilities.
Denver
What position are you projecting at in college?
I’m hoping to play safety or outside linebacker
Denver
And at this point what school are you most interested in and have you received any offers?
I’m most interested in Kansas. No offers yet.
Denver
Did you get a chance to meet with coach Torbush or Coach Wimberly with Kansas as possible position coaches?
Yes I met with both of them and I liked them a lot. Coach Wimberly was the one who talked with me during the position meeting with the safeties.
Denver
Did they talk to you about how they will be evaluating those they will offer or did you get a sense of what they are looking for in a player?
Well in the position meeting coach Wimberly said they're looking for speed, physical players, and size.
Denver
What are you looking for in a potential college choice and football program?
Pretty simple, I'm looking for a good education and the opportunity to play football.
Denver
Well I know you are a name that has jumped onto the fans radar so hopefully things will work themselves out in the future. Thanks for your time and I look forward to speaking with you further down the line.
Thanks I appreciate it.

denver,
thanks for keeping the info coming.
just an idea, the ljw did an artical today that is the 1st of 3, it is about the 3 possible replacements at q.b. i would be interested in seeing more on this position and others that are up in the air for next year.
also saw that you are planning to update the recruiting info, good idea, at least till springball starts up. i think it is only one and a half months out.

He mentions the coaches wanting speed,
did he tell you what his most recent 40 time was? If he’s 6’1", 200 lbs now, I can see him coming in maybe 10 pounds heavier and hopefully running at least a 4.5
My guess...
is that he doesn’t run a 4.5. If he did he’d probably already have an offer (size and speed). My guess is that he runs a mid 4.6.
That was my thought as well,
which would lead me to believe that playing safety is out of the question.
I think...
you’re both on track, my understanding is he’s being looked at as an OLB.

Great as always
Spring ball is looming!

Slow day indeed.
partially my fault, I’m usually a good mid-day contributor. Everyone is out of the office today and I’m pretty much the only one running the show so… busy busy.
Do we know if this kid is on any other schools’ radar (other than KSU) such as OU…those bastards….
Have this kid talk to Geneo and transfer.
Me no likey T2.
OU bastards is right
I live in OK and all my buddies talk about is the “Sunflower Sweep” as they call it this year in recruiting… they ask me about players in next years class that they gonna take… Please Bubba either KU or MLB!!

just talk to them about
how their bball program has fallen apart this season and you’ll feel better

most of them are fairweather fans
who act like basketball doesn’t matter now that blake not there anymore… pretty much they don’t care unless there team is really good than they talk about how good both their programs are… you don’t hear anything about bball when they down like this year.
Just let 'em know,
there’s a new sheriff in town.
My guess is that the river flows mostly S to N in the near future.
monday night
turner and staff were in topeka. i got to talk to strength and conditioning coach, i think his name is john williams (not sure), also talked to vic sheally(sp.) both were very personable, especially vic, he made sure i understood that the #1 priority was to make sure the kids understood they will not tolerate unacceptable behavior. both were very impressive.

Mangino as a position coach

Yep....John Williams is the S&C coaches name...
it’s funny because his nickname is Big John as is the John Williams who plays DT for Kansas. Two Big Johns running around the football field or weight room at least.
52 Conference Championships!! Holy Hell...Good Luck with That!!
Something tells me that the S&C coach
will be the “true” Big John around the football field or weight room.
There simply is no substitute for experience.
Darrian Miller
Looks like the #1 RB in the KC area will be at our second Junior Day. Rushed for 2,800 yards last year and 37 TDs!!! That’s just sick! Already has offers from KU, KSU, and Iowa. Arkansas, Illinois, MU, OU, and Wissconsin are also recruiting him.
mitchumman
if those numbers are correct the list of schools is going to get alot longer. 2,800 yards, how the hell is that even possible? how many times did he carry the ball each game on average?
by huskercarpenter on Feb 10, 2010 1:57 PM CST up reply actions
According to Rivals...
He played 14 games and had 309 attempts (22 rushes a game). He also had 24 receptions for 375 yards and 3 TDs. He had over 3,000 total yards on offense and 40 TDs. I wonder if he also returned kickoffs? Wow!
wow
that is over 9 yards per carry, blue springs plays against some of the better compitition, don’t they? if they do that is brutal!
by huskercarpenter on Feb 10, 2010 3:32 PM CST up reply actions
Looks like he's Keaston Terry's teammate.
Keast Terry is the 4* WR we picked up this year. Which means they had one potent offense last year! Hopefully Keaston can bring him to KU.
He did all that...
on the same team as Terry. Blue Springs put up some big numbers and he’ll be seeing plenty of offers.
52 Conference Championships!! Holy Hell...Good Luck with That!!
I'll be interviewing Darrian Miller...
He’s VERY interested in Kansas although I do know he took notice of the fact that they signed Bourbon.
MU will be going hard after him and he also has another teammate, maybe two that could be on a few D1 radars. In past conversations he has told me he would very much like to play with one or both of those teammates.
52 Conference Championships!! Holy Hell...Good Luck with That!!
we can accomodate all 3
since we're moving to the wishbone

well the other 2 are not RB's...
believe they are on the defensive side of the ball Corner/Safety perhaps.
52 Conference Championships!! Holy Hell...Good Luck with That!!
I say whatever it takes!
If we have more scholarships next year (which we should) then I say you offer at least 1 if not both of them in or der to get Miller here. All I know is I want to be shouting from the stands, “It’s Miller time!” hahaha
well you do have...
some Bourbon in the backfield already.
52 Conference Championships!! Holy Hell...Good Luck with That!!
I've never been a big Bourbon guy
Although, Miller is not my favorite either. Can we get a kid named Long Island Ice Tea? haha
I think you're right about that Denver
Maybe he hasn’t taken notice of Bourbon too much. But at the same time, I think there is enough room for both of them. I like Operum and all, but he’s more of a full back / short yardage runner if you ask me. I’m sure Miller will be watching the rotation this year and see what’s best for him. The one thing I do love though, is that he is VERY interested in Kansas. I say muck fizzu!
