Kansas Jayhawk News and Notes 10.31.10
It was improvement. It was competitive and even though we didn't get to see it you could sense that the team was playing with a little more passion. There is still a long way to go, but at least this somewhat alleviated the fear that this team had given up.
The Jayhawks controlled the line early, pressured Iowa State with the front four and even forced a turnover. The offense did put points on the board early but there just weren't enough of them. By the second half the Jayhawks were gassed as the lack of depth started to show.
It seems like this team is behind Gill, but they might just be a little confused still. A little skeptical, a little questioning and waiting to see something to believe in just like the fans are. I think once Gill can get through that wall then we might start to see more of the positives.
All that said priority number one is to recruit, develop depth and fix the S&C program. There's been a fair amount of discussion on the visual appearance of the team and as things have gone South this year there have been comments trickling out of the program relating back to the lack of a focused, supervised and executed conditioning program. With the lack of depth it might not make all the difference, but it sure would help.
Improvement and competitiveness, that's what I've asked for so today I feel just a little better about Kansas football. Moral victories sure aren't what I want to be playing for, but it's a start.

Mecham should start at quarterback again | KUsports.com
I think we overreacted after Webb won against Georgia Tech so I'm not ready to do the same, but it is food for thought. Either way QB is priority numero uno in the offseason.
Mecham's first start not bad | CJOnline.com
Early reviews are good, but are we to the point where we can settle for a QB that plays ultra conservative.
Hurry-up offense wears KU out | KUsports.com
Depth and perhaps a poorly managed summer conditioning program bit us in the ass. The team played hard, there just isn't anyone to rotate in and it caught up with us.

"It was improvement"
It was another loss.
Tuesday can’t get here quick enough…….and I don’t even like basketball.
build a damn football program, beat some ass, and get on tv more.
so a 28-16 loss on the road
Is not improvement from 40+ point losses at home? If we went to Oregon next week and lost in overtime, would that be the same too?

Absolutely
You are what your record says you are. We lost. At this point, there is no such thing as a moral victory. Those are reserved for teams that have one D1 caliber player on their roster. Not a roster full of 3 and even some 4 star players.

As Owen said, the players were gassed in the second half.
Coupled with the injuries on defense, we just couldn’t put together a good stop in the 3rd. Time for a change in the S&C program right after the season ends.
Big John’s goal was to make these guys big and strong. From what I see they are no bigger than last year, but they are definitely slower, and less conditioned.
It's not that I'm lazy; it's that I just don't care. (#739)
It was a good sign
For a team that had been beaten as bad as KU had the previous 3 weeks to go on the road in the Big 12 and play close is a good effort. Still goes down as a loss yes but if whole team had already quit on Gill the score would have been another 55-7 type result. After this game wouldn’t be one bit surprised to see KU beat Colorado this week. Unfortunately after that the schedule just doesn’t allow them to build much momentum into next season.

Let's be realistic
ISU is not a good team. Just look at their stats.
I think the question still remains…..were the results because of an improved KU football team or because of a bad (and dare I say it – overconfident) ISU team?

Couldn’t agree more. Great chance next week to squeak out one more victory before it gets real ugly.
This is unrelated to any link...
but watching the NFL today and the whole protect the player thing has gotten out of hand. I’ve watched Kyle Orton brace to take a sack twice and in the process he dramatically lowers the position of his head. The result is that the defender who is bringing his arms to wrap Orton’s arms and waist, suddenly hits his helmet and they call a personal foul. Really puts the D at a disadvantage if you basically can’t tackle the QB.

He got thumped pretty good on that first blow to the head though.
But I do agree that it’s a bad rule. It’s at least better than looking wrong at Tom Brady’s knees and getting a flag and a fine.

yeah but on that first one...
he basically ducks into the fetal position which causes the contact. I thought that first one was the most dramatic move on his part.

He did duck into it
but QB’s step into throws all the time and get the flag if there’s a defender on the ground. They’re just bad rules and QB’s are over protected.

Doesn't matter with Denver
they suck so bad even the refs can’t help them out. But I do agree with your point 100%
