Your Rotation: Now and March
This has probably been discussed in many different places but it's Friday, I'm bored, and I'm starting to think about basketball. So I ask you this question KU faithful, who is in your rotation right now of solid contributors? I'm not talking about who plays against Washburn and Fort Hays St., but who will be in the rotation in the Arizona game if things stay close and we get tested like I hope we do?
Here are my thoughts:
F - Kief (assuming he's healthy)
F - Cus
G - Mario Little
G - Josh Selby
G - Tyshawn Taylor
Wow, this really was a tough one. We're so deep at guard right now that it's tough to decide on the 3rd one. Selby and Taylor are no-brainers but after that it gets questionable. I could easily see the stability and shooting ability of Tyrel Reed to get him in this spot, but for now I'm going to go with the height and versatility of Little.
Frontcourt Reserves:
Thomas Robinson
Travis Releford
Jeff Withey (When/if healthy)
Backcourt Reserves:
Tyrel Reed
Brady Morningstar
Elijah Johnson
Putting Releford as a frontcourt reserve feels like a stretch to me but it's a reality, we are very thin up front and could be a real problem if more injuries come up. I think it's safe to say that we will be a fast, guard oriented squad this year.
No revelations really with this, but now I'd like to say where I'd like to have the lineup in March. To me that means a steady rotation of about 9. It doesn't mean we can't go 10 deep but 8 is a great number with 9 being more realistic with this type of team.
Markieff Morris
Marcus Morris
Mario Little
Josh Selby
Tyshawn Taylor
Tyrel Reed
Thomas Robinson
Travis Releford
Elijah Johnson
No inclusion of Brady here which is probably not realistic but I think it's time that his role gets cut down. Once again, this will be a small team but a fast and athletic one. No inclusion of Withey isn't what I'd like but it's hard to see him consistently healthy in this hypothetical world I'm in.
So in March, what do you think our 9 man rotation will be? Or, do you think it will be less or more than that?
Happy Friday.

A couple of things...
First things first, though…great post. I love these types of things, and with football being what it is (or isn’t), I’m more than happy to look forward to basketball.
Regarding the frontcourt: I think we’re far more likely to see Mario Little playing the 4 a little bit than we are seeing Releford do so. Little played the 4 a bit two years ago, and played it pretty darn well, as I recall. He creates significant matchup problems at the 4. Therefore, I think it’s far more likely that we see Releford at the 3, and often, especially at the beginning of the year (even more so if Selby is out for any significant stretch). Releford is a Langford-esque slasher who can get to the rim. I’m also curious if his red-shirt year has helped him improve his outside shot. If so, he could be a VERY dangerous player out on the wing. Maybe not Brandon Rush or Xavier Henry, but not bad either. Remember, had Xavier not come here last year, Releford and Little both play the 3 the majority of the available minutes.
Regarding Brady: It’s easy to look on paper and say Brady gets left off. I just don’t see HCBS doing that, at least not to start the year (as you’ve indicated). I think we all hope BM’s role decreases as the year goes along (meaning, ostensibly, that younger, more athletic players are making a bigger contribution), but I don’t think it’ll happen right away. The other thing to think about is BM’s defense. If Little or Releford can become a lock-down defender, that will speed the transition, no doubt.
Lastly, if Withey is healthy, I expect he’ll be in the rotation at the end of the year. If so, I would expect Reed and Releford to fight over the remaining minutes at the 3 (assuming Releford doesn’t overtake Little for the starting position).
I can hardly wait. Nov. 2 can’t get here soon enough.
When is Late Night?
yeah great point
about Little at the 4 spot as well, he is more suited than Releford

ye ye ye ye
To start:
Taylor
Selby
Releford
Marcus
Markieff
First off the bench: Little (at the 4 or the 3), Robinson (4 or 5), Reed (at the two), Morningstar (2 or 3).
I think Little and Releford’s minutes will be close to even, and he will play either/or depending on the matchup. Releford is super fast and a great defender, so I see him getting the nod at the three in non-con matchups where he is more of a matchup problem athletically.
When Withey gets healthy the post rotation changes a bit obviously. I see Morningstar’s minutes to decrease.
Also, unfortunately, I don’t see Elijah factoring in much this season. But he will get a ton of minutes next year once Morningstar and Reed graduate. We really should have redshirtted him last year

How does the fact that Brady will be sleeveless this season affect his minutes?
Its like Sampson after a haircut…
And here....we....go...

ok
to start
1. Tyshawn
2. Selby
3. Reed
4. morris
5. Morris
off the bench EJ to relac either TT or Selby. morningstar/releford to get Reed. Trob to get most of the bigs minutes
a few interesting lineups we could throw out there
Athletic
1. Tyshawn
2Selby
3. EJ
4 Morris
5. Trob
Big
1. Selby
2. EJ
3 Morris
4 Morris
5. Whithey
shooting
1. Selby
2 Reed
3 Morningstar
4/5Morrisx2
Your first lineup would be mine
I think Reed gets the start because he’s a senior who plays his butt off, and does well both offensively and defensively. I think Little sees more minutes than Releford purely because he’s capable of playing both 3 and 4, while Releford doesn’t have the post game to do so.
I'll probably do a post on the different lineup possibilities
like I did last year. Waiting till Selby gets cleared

my lineup
Shelby
Taylor
Little
Marcus
Markieff
Releford/Reed/EJ/Thomas coming off the bench. Sorry Brady, you had a good run but it’s time to put the athletes on the court. I’ve never been a big Brady fan anyway. I think if Little, and Releford wouldn’t of redshirted, Brady wouldn’t of played as much last year.

I'm not picking on you, hawk,
but can we institute a policy on this site where we all promise not to call Josh Selby “Shelby?” Just a big pet peeve of mine is all.
When is Late Night?
Im sorry, I know its selby. I wasn’t paying attention to any my phone auto-corrects it to Shelby. That is my fault for not proof reading it.

No worries.
I hadn’t considered the auto-correct situation. I never comment on my phone, so I don’t have to deal with it. Like I said, I wasn’t trying to pick on you. I’ve just seen his name misspelled all over the place and it frustrates me. You’re off the hook. For now… ;)
When is Late Night?
ha ha
Thanks. I know what you mean though. I get more of it just talkin to people though. I hate it when “KU fans” callin him Shelby. And when your actually talkin to someone, there is no excuse.

That should say, I wasn’t latin attention too, and my phone auto-corrects it. Once again I need to proof read my messages. But I’m goin to shut up now because my typing his horrible tonight ha ha.

Most schools would kill to have 4 bigs as good as ours
Frontcourt depth doesn’t worry me—especially if Withey showed his true potential in that Iowa State game last year. Also, watch out for Keith Langford’s cousin, a 6’8 walkon with some real athleticism- could be another Moody situation.
I’m actually more worried about the backcourt. We have no idea what to expect from Little or Releford at this point. Same could be said for Elijah, and really, the two freshmen. The known quantities are 28 year old Brady Morningstar, Reed, and Taylor. Taylor is “supposed” to have a breakout season, but he’s never been an on-court leader in his life. Can he do it?
If our crunch-time lineup is Taylor/Reed/Morningstar/Morrii, and none of those backcourt players have improved at all from last year, I don’t think we’re better than third in the Big 12.

Here's my favorite possible lineup:
I call it the “run like bastards” offense:
Selby
Johnson
Releford
Little
Marcus Morris
by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Oct 24, 2010 11:35 PM CDT reply actions
Marcus
I kind of like Marcus at 3.
Selby
Taylor
Mc Morris
Mk Morris
Withey
TRob is your big subs and Little can play 4
Reed and Morningstar are your little subs
Releford comes in at 3
Obviously Mc would get some time at 4 too, but I think that may be our best lineup from a matchup standpoint. We’re probably a little thin down low to pull it off with any regularity and it does seem Self plays more lipservice than anything to getting these guys to the wing (see Wright, Julian, Morris, Mc). I do think Withey will be more impactful than TRob (though it will probably come down to which fouls less).
