Don't get me wrong on this,

I like Jacob Pullen. A lot. I think he’s really, really good. But there’s almost no chance in my mind that he ends up the Big XII POY at the end of the year. For some reason, I feel pretty confident that K-State is going to under-achieve this season. They’ll be good, as will Pullen, but how will he react to being the keyed-on player EVERY night? K-State isn’t so deep at guard this year as they were last year, and defenses are going to focus on stopping Pullen as much as possible. Not saying he doesn’t put up some good numbers occasionally, but I don’t view him as a gets-his-own-shot-and-points-whenever-he-wants-them kind of player.

But that’s just me.

I think the depth at guard is better than last year

Pullen, McGruber, Irving, Southwell and I can’t even remember the rest of the guys. Yes, Clemente was amazingly fast, but he was also erratic. I think KSU will miss his explosiveness, but not his penchant for dumb decisions and poor shot selection.

I agree

He needs to bring it every night (never did that last year) before he can get this kind of publicity

I get the feeling

that Bensa and KU Grad 08 didn’t watch much K-State basketball last year, other than the games where the Cats played the Hawks. Kelly is a beast, and Jake is freakin’ nails!

I'm more interested in seeing how Pullen

in seeing how Pullen reacts to being THE guy. Last year he had Clemente with him in the backcourt. This year…not so much. Again, I like the guy. I think he’s really good, but I’m not sure he’s good enough to get his own shot and his own points whenever he wants them.

No sorry

I don’t watch other basketball teams when I could watch KU, my alma matter, you know the juggernaut of the conference. The won who has won the league six strait times, won a national title two years ago, etc.

The only image I have of your forwards is Aldrich and Morris abusing them. You know when we won three games against you last year…

My Cats played (and won) one of the classic NCAA tournament games of all time, with Jake cementing his clutch reputation. Remind me how KU did in that tournament we were both in at the last of the season? ;)

Classic eh?

I just laughed up my kool aid. In a sweet 16 game you beat Xavier. Woo. Thats called a great tournament game. There are 4 of those every year. A “classic” game is KU beating Memphis in the title game, or Indiana winning on Smart’s game winner. Games that mean something. And I never said Pullen didn’t deserve POTY, I told Bensa he did. I just thought there was someone better than Kelly, who scored 11 points a game last year and didn’t blow me away.

The second part of your comment is why KState fans are so annoying. Yes, you guys got further than us in ONE TOURNAMENT. ONE! What happened in the previous 30?

We won the league, beat you THREE times, yet you are going to talk shit because you advanced further in one tournament. Like your season is automatically better than ours, despite what I just listed? Please.

::chugs more koolaid::

Forgive my outburst, but you guys need to get your learn onnn. We went 33-3 last year. 15-1 in the league. Won that league six strait times. Please spare me the “we advanced further in the tournament” crap.

Shit happens when you win championships

by Andrew Clark on Oct 14, 2010 12:38 PM CDT up reply actions

In the end,

that’s how seasons are measured. And it’s not Purple koolaid to say that the Xavier game was one of the best of all time. I have KU fan friends that have even told me that. Also, I don’t defend the “KSU as preseason #1” pick. The league is KU’s to lose — and hopefully KSU will take it from them this year. But, until we do, KU is the champ.

No thats now how seasons are measured

You are a KState fan and new to following a good basketball team, so I’ll give you a pass here.

If you don’t make the final 4, it really doesn’t matter that much when you lose in the tournament. The tournament is a crapshoot. Upsets happen all the time.

KU won the league title AND the tournament title. People will remember that, and the fact that KU has won 6 strait of them before they remember KSU was in the Elite 8 last year.

In ten, 20, 50 years, people will say Bill Self won x amount Big 12 titles, had x amount Final 4 appearances, etc. Elite 8s don’t mean shit. Trust me, KU has made two of them under Self apart from the title run.

Your typical fictional bird condescension aside,

the people I’ve heard talk about the Xavier game have made the point that it will be remembered alongside the Duke/UK Elite Eight game as one of the best ever.

One of the best of the year

Not one of the best ever. It was a great game, but like I said, its march. That game was no better than KU’s win over Arizona in 2002 on our way to the title game (Elite 8). No one remembers that game outside of the KU fanbase. It was almost identical to the KSU Xavier game

“typical fictional bird condescension” ? wow, way to throw out the generic KState jab. Whats next, we cheated to win our title? Our coach has a hairpiece? Mangino is fat?

Your previous post

Gus Johnson? That guy never gets excited about anything...

I admitted it was a great game. I just don’t think its going to be remembered nationally like you think it will. It doesn’t compare to Illinois-Arizona in 2003, game to go to the final 4 which was more exciting and had more on the line. Just my opinion.

You can keep screaming stuff at me, not going to change my opinion. So keep yelling how great it was. How everyone loved it. Etc etc. Won’t change my opinion. Great game, not one of the greatest ever

Each fanbase is different obviously but if you took a national poll

I wonder what two games would be voted most memorable from last year? I bet the championship w/ Duke and Butler would be #1. I wouldn’t be shocked if KU being upset was voted #2.

Is that too much kool-aid or does anyone else agree?

just off the top of my head

this one came to mind and I looked it up in about 15 seconds:

2004-2005 – Illinois
“They gained a #1 seed in the “big dance” and posted one of the most memorable games in NCAA history against Arizona. Down 15 points with around 4 minutes left, the Illini sparked a run led by Luther Head and Deron Williams. The game was sent into overtime and the orange and blue pulled off the one point win to advance to the Final Four in St. Louis."

I knew it was Illinois but had no idea who they played because the team that lost didn’t make the Final Four. I seriously just thought of that in a matter of seconds.

K.Scott I agree with you that it was a wonderful game and I do think KUGrad should cut you a little slack because of course your going to feel the way you do about that game and your season. But these games really do happen every year, that’s what makes the tourney so fun to watch every March.

I have to agree with them, there is making the Final Four and then everything else. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use the fact that “many players from an Elite 8 squad from last year are back” when talking about the Cats this coming year, but just because you advance further in the tourney does not automatically qualify you as having a better year.

If you hang Elite 8 banners it can be pretty fun, but we wouldn’t have enough space if we did that.

It was a great game...

but this..

it will be remembered alongside the Duke/UK Elite Eight game as one of the best ever.

Come on? Duke went on to win the title. It had two “blue blood” programs with high profile players and high profile coaches in a game that decided who went to the final four.

K-State/Xavier…nope. No Final Four participant, not the same level of national notoriety for either team. That’s not me trying to knock K-State but it’s reality.

Are you serious?

Basketball is MEASURED in per-game numbers. What stat have you concocted that somehow proves the false point that Morris>Pullen? It really ISN’T close for Preseason PotY between the two of them.

No it isn't

by Andrew Clark on Oct 14, 2010 12:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh, give it a rest!

Pullen isn’t Randolph. And, for the most part, basketball IS measured in numbers—and if Morris had better numbers, you would agree with that point. But, this is quickly devolving into an episode of “I-don’t-give-a-crap-about-the-facts” discussion, and I’m not interested.

An overall player is measured more than by scoring

I said I think Pullen should be the POTY winner in the preseason. But just because he scores more doesn’t make him a better player than Morris. There is a lot more to factor in. If you can’t see that side of it…well…wow

Shit happens when you win championships

by Andrew Clark on Oct 14, 2010 12:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Pullen is complete

He plays D, he has a solid Assist/Turnover ratio, he shoots free throws well, and he shoots the 3 well. Are there Jeff Georges/Zach Randolphs out there, that are stat mirages? Sure. But, normally, if a guy is putting up numbers solid across the board, he truly IS a great player.

It's just an opinion.

Albeit a highly-educated one. As anybody who frequents this website knows, my opinions and predictions are pretty much never wrong.

But seriously, Marcus Morris has a great shooting touch from pretty much anywhere on the floor. Don’t forget that last year, he was, what, 4th option on the floor and he still averaged 13 pts. a game? On that team? I’m getting away from my point, but still. Pretty impressive, if you ask me.

Back to the shooting argument: I’m not saying the numbers back me up (in fact, I’ve already said the numbers DON’T back me up), but if you watch Morris closely, you’ll see the same shooting motion from 5 feet as he has from 25 and beyond. It’s a pure, pure stroke. I think Fraschilla (or somebody who was calling a KU game last year, it may not have been Fraschilla) called it one of the purest shooting strokes he had ever seen. He’s a great shooter, and I think that will become VERY obvious this season. He will be virtually unguardable during certain stretches this year.

I suggested scoring efficiency. I suggested true shooting percentage. I suggested a number of these.

If we have the means to truly look into these things, why scratch the surface?

Because most laypeople don't have a clue about the deeper stats.

A Voice of Reason

Did you honestly compare a Forward with a Guard.? To suggest that the stats included would implicate the forward?

I don’t know where to start…

Yes

Scoring is a comparable stat, as is comparing the measurables AS A WHOLE. Preseason, Pullen is the clear choice.

Then the POY, in your eyes has devolved into what the Cy Young was a few years ago. If you base your argument upon scoring alone, why wouldn’t someone like Jimmer Fredette have won the Naismith last year?

Other statistical variety must be included in the discussion. An offense run through a single player could skew the issue. Steals, blocks, offensive efficiency, true shooting percentage, etc. All of this needs to be incorporated into a discussion of ‘best player in the league.’

Scoring alone is like looking into the ocean and only seeing blue/green. Look deeper.

I certainly HAVE "looked deeper"

Pullen is a good A/TO guy, and makes his team better on many levels. What we’re discussing here is stats that are easily-accessible to the layperson, and that clearly point out that Pullen is a solid preseason PotY choice.

Pullen puts the ball in the net. I do not discount that. Unfortunately, his A/TO ratio was no better than Tyshawn Taylor last year (1.37 to 1.98 over a similar sample size).

Pullen’s job is to score. He does it well. Morris’ job last year was to defend and rebound. He did those well, but also made an impact in the scoring column.

Excellence is exceeding one’s role. Pullen more than satisfactorily upheld his role, but didn’t make an impact elsewhere.

You've got to be kidding.

He didn’t make an impact elsewhere? Seriously? An A/TO of 1.37 is solid for a shooting guard. Also, 3.6 apg from a SG is serious as well. He also grabbed just under two steals per game. I get the distinct sense that you’re trying to cherry-pick the numbers simply to prove your point.

Cherry-picking numbers?

Yes, and Jacob Pullen will end up POY because he is the Baron Davis of KState.

Pullen is PRESEASON PotY

and deservedly so, because he’s solid across the board.

But, I’ve got three grad school deadlines staring me in the face starting tomorrow, and going through Sunday, so I have to quit padding RCT’s page view stats. Later gents!

Oh, one last thing, as I head out the virtual door:

we should really make this kind of thing a more frequent happening. Something like a home-and-home message board “fight night” or something. I could find random articles praising the Cats over the Hawks in basketball for some reason, and then we could fight for an hour or two. Quite entertaining for all, I think! :)

Yeah, sure.

His comment kind of struck me like when a bunch of folks are gathered around, talking some trash in (relatively) good fun, and then some guy pipes up with some remark that just kind of makes everyone go, “Why?” I doubt that even those who were doing some friendly “jousting” with me above support that kind of drop-in insult. If they do, oh well, I guess.
