KU vs Iowa State: Plus/Minus
Very short today. KC has some commentary on the game in the post-game thread. Marcus- quit missing 3 shots a possession, ok? You played 19 minutes today and took 16 shots. They weren't bad shots, just make it the first time. Cole leads the way at +18 and Brady comes in second at +9. Below average game for the team plus/minus, but a win on the road counts the same. Time to get ready for Monday.

Warden...question for you...
does this include the tempo multiplier??
Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.
Doesn't look like it to me.

No. For one game, both teams are on the same field so it isn't needed.
Although it could be used to justify the team’s +48.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
That's two in a row
that the other team’s key big man (Udoh and now Brackins) have come in and put up absolutely nothing in the +/-. Literally, nothing. 0 and -1, respectively.

I'm more impressed with doing it today...
we were on the road and it wasn’t partially due to foul trouble.

Serious question
How are you able to chart the plus/minus? Where do you get that level of detail from the stats to know who was on the floor, everytime a basket was scored?
It's not the traidtional +/- that you are thinking of, I believe.
It isn’t based on when a player is on the floor and how the team does. It actually isn’t related to that at all. The (original) formula before it was tweaked can be found here
Basically, it is Pts+Reb+Ast+Blk+Stl-FGA-FTA-TO-FL.

if you do want that kind of +/-
You can go to basketballstats.com
or maybe it’s basketball-stats.com with a hyphen. Not positive

yep...as KC said...
it’s a modified +/- by our local stat/math guru Warden

oh ok
Thanks for the responses. Less thrilled about it, then. No offense to Warden. I already track plenty of stats using the ones that KCsince88 had… Except I don’t weigh each stat equally.
Normally, I’d like to fraternize about the game, but thinking of it just frustrates me to no end. Your team is good. Wish I could say the same about mine… Some of you young J-Hawks may not know this, but there was once a time where ISU could beat KU, and have some close, epic games…. Those days seem too long ago though…
Good luck the rest of the way.

Oh I think there are plenty of us
that remember those days. Days of Marcus Fizer & before. I grew up watching Darnell Valentine, Ken Koenig, etc. In time ISU will be back & that will be great for the league.

I'd be interested in seeing what you do.
Do you have any links?
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
Thinking.
Once again, I’m no math wiz, as I said before. But, with this formula, couldn’t you instead take an opponent’s number of possessions a game, rather than the national average as you did here, and extrapolate it to that number of possessions and determine the amount of +/- ratings that we would have and that pace and what we would need to beat them?
Or, is that just dumb?

I'm tired and maybe that's the reason, but I have no clue what you mean.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
Yeah and I know its strictly number based
But 6 shots totaled on two possessions with him trying to get a down low score, one he eventually finished. All in all his ability to score this game, not to mention the job he did on Brackins…. dude deserves much higher than a 5.
I’ll argue he was our best player out there today factoring in what he did on O and D, followed closely by Cole

so would I
but it’s kinda tough for a formula (any formula, this isn’t an indictment on Warden’s) to capture a situation like the time he had those 3 or 4 shots in a row and kept getting his own rebound.
Probably the only way to do it is to weight rebounds and what not.

Yeah thats why I don't believe in Math, or Science
the world would be better without them

In fairness,
he did get a rebound for every missed shot, too. So, really, it evened it all out. Plus, the two points when he finally decided to make the basket.

Also on one of those, I think he missed three shots in a row
then Cole got the board and made the basket.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
That was one (and I know its meaningless but he was fouled like whoa on it)
And the other he finally put in. I just mean that is like a 1-6 span added on which hurt, when otherwise pretty much almost all his shots dropped, including some jump shots which really spread the floor well for him (once Marcus dropped some elbow jumpers bigs started getting out of the paint to guard him which left Cole with some one on ones that he cashed in on finally).
I LOVE the plus/minus Warden don’t get me wrong, just saying I hope the casual reader doesn’t see this and thinks Marcus didn’t get his
