KU vs. UTEP - For those who like to bet
Well folks, the spread is 11. Game time temp is expected to be a comfortable 86 degrees in the high desert.
Now I'm not much of a better and maybe someone who is would like to put together a weekly column...
But just for fun. I think I'm taking the over here. There are some factors that I believe will play into it:
1) the desert heat will not overwhelm our guys (there's a 30% chance for rain...)
2) Briscoe is back
3) Greene is back (which should help with the push up the middle)
4) Our running game will allow us to play a bit more ball control
Not my best work, I know, but I saw the line and was thinking that I'd definitely take the over.

Disclosure: I have no experience with betting.
However, when you say “take the over” doesn’t that normally apply to the total points scored?
You’ve listed the spread, which is 11 points in favor of KU. But you haven’t listed the total points.
For example, last week’s OU/BYU game had a total points of 63. My boss took the under, expecting a defensive battle. He won.
I would expect the oddsmakers to predict a shoot out in this game with the total points being in the high 60s. But if I were to bet, I’d take the under on that. I think KU’s D will step to the plate and KU’s run game will control the clock, keeping total scoring lower than expected.

You are correct....
Interesting Idea for a weekly fanpost Labba…care to run with it…overs/unders, spread etc.

Nope -
don’t know enough about sports betting. See Rivet above exposing my ignorance. Though I would be interested in contributing from a commenting standpoint. Maybe when I learn a bit more I could put something together…
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's probably propaganda.
Still working for a gov't bank?
Surely you can pull that off while on the clock…
I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.
Nope -
Smith Barney is now Morgan Stanley. Morgan Stanley paid off TARP prior to the aquisition…. my job still sucks tho.

Ignoring the "over" idea,
I’d take the Jayhawks giving 11 points. No way it should be that close. Heard another interesting line yesterday, but can’t remember what it was. Have to go look at spreads and see if I can find it.

I'll give an actual score
KU 41 – UTEP 21
Score is 24-14 at half, KU wears em down in the second half. Sharp and co. have big days on the ground, KU has two picks and 3 total turnovers. Just me prediction. So yes I would also take the over.
As someone who enjoys sports betting
I might run with posting some stuff like that if no one else wishes to do it.

have at it!
I’d love to see a “best bets” of the weekend along with some thoughts on KU/ Big 12 games.

go with it Este...
sounds like a pretty good idea….I wouldn’t mind getting into a little bit of wagering if I knew where to do it and had some tips.

CentSports.com
This is a site my brother is addicted to. It’s run out of College Station, TX. Basically, they give you 10 cents when you open your account and you can bet on just about any sport. Once your winnings reach $20 you can cash out. You can’t put any money in – that would be illegal.
Anyway, it sounds like a great place to practice your betting skills. If you lose all your cents, they automatically reload your account with another dime.
I haven’t done it yet because I’m concerned with what might happen – my boss is addicted to gambling on college football. I LOVE college football and not sure I want betting to factor into my enjoyment of the game.

what he said
I have a hard enough time playing fantasy sports for free and worrying about it. Betting too much on something I love to watch, like college pig, would be too slippery of a slope.
That
I’ve always felt a little uncomfortable actually betting on a sporting event. Even horse racing makes me feel a little dirty. Jai Alai on the other had, I inexplicably had no problem with.
That being said, it think some of the metrics that go into betting and some of the hypotheticals are interesting to read.
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's probably propaganda.
feel dirty betting on sports?
I can think of a lot more things I’ve done that would have you going to church!

It's not that I feel it's
sinful that I need to see a priest afterwords, it’s just that…I don’t know, I guess I have sort of Romantic, if you will, ideals when it comes to sports. Especially collegiate sports. For me it’s fun to think of KU beating the spread and stuff like that I just don’t know if I would ever feel comfortable putting money on it.
But I do put $5 into a bracket pool every March, am I now a total hypocrite? I’m so conflicted…
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's probably propaganda.
Exactly.
I usually do a pretty good job of still cheering for who I want to win, then worrying about my bracket/fantasy players later.
If I put down $200, though, on a game, I doubt I would be so capable of ignoring the money and watching as if nothing was on the line.
oh wow
Brackets and fantasy mean nothing when it comes to my own teams. If in my bracket, I put KU to lose in the Sweet 16 (rarely happens because I can’t bring myself to not have them in the Final Four) and then they don’t lose, I could give a crap about the bracket. Same with Chiefs and Royals.

Well, I gave it some thought and since I can't really lose money...
I went ahead and signed up. I’ll give it a try.
Anyone else who might be interested in this fun (the site is really funny – considering it’s run by Aggies) can click here:

Not this season,
but the PAST baseball season, I bet from April to September on the baseball season on Bodog.. I did pretty good. I would have done it again this year, too, but I was in school and didn’t have the money to start my account. But I still look at the moneylines everyday and kind of keep a running tally. I will say that I wish I did have the money to play this year, as I think I’ve done pretty good just looking at games.
As far as football goes, never done it. But, I have no qualms about it once I have the start-up dough. My only rule is that I never bet on my team(s). Unless it’s KU and they are being totally disrespected by the line. Then, I would pony up on them. For instance, the -2.5 line against KSucks. But, I’d never bet on Miami either.

Yeah I go with Bodog because I'm used to it
If you are serious about doing it, I’d recommend researching a few sites to see which one works for you. I would highly discourage BetUs.com, though. Realllly did not like them.
As for KC below, I agree that betting on your team can be hairy sometimes, but other times I feel like I know so much more about the matchup than the oddsmakers. This can obviously backfire on me, though.

I'm with you there.
I think I could make some money off of it, but it would cost me some of the joy.
Even fantasy sports, as you say, kind of taint it. I mean, last night, I was watching the game, and this one guy in the back kept on cheering for Santonio Holmes. He really didn’t care who won the game, just that Santonio Holmes got a bunch of points. That was the extent of his caring.
Last year, I went to a Chiefs game in my dad’s old seats. Him and a friend have had them since 1990. Anyways, there is a new pair of guys that sit directly behind the seats, and they listened to radios the entire time just listening for their fantasy teams. We were playing the Saints. One of them cheered outloud when Lance Moore, who was on his fantasy team, scored a TD. I almost punched him in the face.
Fantasy sports are fun. Betting on sports are fun. But what makes sports so cool, so fantastic is the purity aspect. You want somebody to win for the sport, with no real selfish reason involved.
Of course, I will probably end up betting on football/basketball at some point. I just hope I don’t.
That guy was me
I own Holmes, and he went off for 20 points for me. Beltway Mudslingers are screwed

CentSports is fantastic.
It was a fad last semester at my high school. It caught fire, and soon enough, the library was jam-packed with people making bets after school and checking obscure tennis scores to see if the people they picked won (this was during baseball season, so you had to get creative as to w hat you bet on).
I got up to 13 dollars at one point, and then slowly precipitated downwards and lost it all. Pitt losing to Villanova in the Elite Eight hurt me a bunch. I had like $4 bucks on that one.
But yeah, it’s fun.
really
I’m intrigued. There is no cost either?
by I need more Esteban on Sep 11, 2009 1:15 PM CDT up reply actions
Nope.
Absolutely nothing.
You have to get up to at least $20 to cash, though, and I bet it takes forever to get your money.
I haven’t done it for months. But yeah, I think I’m going to get back into it with all of the football games. It’s fun. It’s free.
Gambling makes everything better.
Definitely run with that feature, Este. I won $200 playing craps last Sunday in KC- hot hand in a dice game. CLACKITY CLACK!
“Invested” $50 of that into drinks for a little lady last night. We’ll see how that goes…

"Yo Chuck, I got yo girl!"
Yeah I just won this baby, cash
That sounds amazing by the way. Never been that lucky with the table games but also haven’t done them enough, in my first and only trip to Vegas, I was all over the Sportsbook and played some Blackjack, lost a little overall in Blackjack but won near $200 at the Sportsbook. Sunday Dodgers over the Padres was huuuge. Really really can’t wait to go out there for the first weekend of the NCAA tourney, it will be epic.

I wish I would have put some money on Toledo.
Damn, Colorado looks awful tonight.
I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.
Um, no.
Iowa State is a lot scarier than Boulder. Shit, UNoCo was a lot scarier than the Colorado I saw tonight.

I’ve never felt so completely embarrassed as a Colorado fan (except for the whole, you know, rape thing). Thank god I watched portions of this game at a bar. Holy fuck almighty we are horrible.

If Toledo can score that easily on them
We should have a turkey shoot. Not only does CU’s D lack any speed or line, but their O-line doesn’t look good as well. I don’t think CU is going to get to 4 wins this year.
