Open Game Thread :: 2009 College Football Kickoff Weekend :: Saturday September 5th

So, SlowDance's computer/ SBN account/ ineptness at doing his own job (I kid, I kid) won't allow him to publish anything to the site, so I'm in charge now.  All posts run through me :D

Regardless, this is your Open Game Thread for all games beginning at 11 CST.  More insightfulness to come from our fearless leader.  All I know is that I have a full day's worth of comments for the opening day of college football to squeeze into only four hours or so.  Prepare for obnoxious, comment fiend KC.

... at 11 CST on ESPN2.  Also, you can see this year's national champions, the Penn State Nittany Lions, kick off their season on one of the Big 10+1 Network stations.  Other than that, there's not really anything worth watching during the early period.  So, just come here to this thread and talk to me now while you have a chance to.  I won't be here all day, ya know...

And good job with the Greg Paulus. He definitely was going to be in mine, but you probably did it better than I would have.

I’m in and out.

I’ve been watching the Ohio State – Navy game. It doesn’t look good for David over Goliath in this one.

What to wach?

Navy at Ohio State?
Minnesota @ Syracuse?
Kentucky vs. Miami (OH)?

I’m going to start with tOSU and the Midshipmen. I think Navy could win, if things break the right way. And I love big upsets. I definitely want to watch some of Greg Paulus, though.

As much as I couldn’t stand him (at all) as a basketball player, I have a sneaking sensation I am going to love him as a QB. So, watch out.

by rockchalk on Sep 5, 2009 11:02 AM CDT reply actions

Navy has NO chance.

Swet. er. vest. (that’s fun. I see why you do it.)

Watch Syracuse. I wanna see Paulus get blown up when he thinks he can take off and run.

As bad as Syracuse looks to be,

I’m simply AMAZED that Old Man Snyder didn’t schedule them this year. It’s like another 1-AA team, but you get credit for a 1-A team.

by Andy Edwards on Sep 5, 2009 11:08 AM CDT up reply actions

Not sure on the exact reason...

my guess is it’s a carryover from the Spring and summer suspension. It’s definitely not injury and it’s only for today, but yes he’ll be suited up but won’t see the field.

by Owen on Sep 5, 2009 11:10 AM CDT up reply actions

True.

Maybe he wows Mangino and we can use him all year and save Dez for offense. Blessing in disguise?

lol can't have a CKC without KC - Nicholai Khabibulin (LN21)

by Andy Edwards on Sep 5, 2009 11:11 AM CDT up reply actions

maybe...

but I did hear a recent theory on Briscoe and I don’t disagree. Since this will with 95% certainty be his last year, let’s use him for every bit of his worth. He did a great job in the Mizzou game and seems pretty good at avoiding the big hit so I’m not as worried about him getting hurt back there.

Back to Navy-tOSU.

It may be odd, but I absolutely love the triple option.

Just love it to death. I love the spread a lot, too, which is why it might be weird. They are like polar opposites. But basically I just love unique offenses. I love the triple option.

This is true.

It’s the best part of sports.

Three-point shooters in college basketball are the best, and then the spread and triple option in football.

They threw one pass (an incompletion), and ran it every other time.

15 plays.

So, the Big 10/11 has a million games going on at once.

Nearly all of them are against terrible schools.

Purdue up 14-0 on Toledo.
Penn State up 14-0 on Akron.
Minnesota up 14-3 on Syracuse.
Northwestern up 28-0 on Towson.
Michigan State up 14-0 on Montana State.

But, Iowa, playing against a 1-AA school in Northern Iowa (albeit a really good one), is only tied 3-3 in the 2nd quarter.

Way too early to mean anything, but with the Big 10/11 as a whole absolutely destroying the competition, 3-3 isn’t very good.

Unless I'm much mistaken (always a possibility)

Once the kicking team touches the ball, the returning team can pick up the ball and return it with impunity, meaning that even if the returner fumbles it or takes a safety or anything like that, the return team still gets the ball at the spot the kicking team touched it.

Yes.

A big part of why the SEC is considered so fantastic is because ESPN.

by rockchalk on Sep 5, 2009 3:21 PM CDT up reply actions

And ESPN just signed the SEC

to an ultra-rich contract to show their games, so no change in the next decade or so.

Okay, Michigan is out of the rotation.

Nobody wants to see 21-0 games.

Right now, USC-San Jose State is the game of choice. USC is definitely going to win, I promise. But, it will be fun to watch San Jose State stay close for awhile.

Mizzou...

is going to win this one easily…16-3 by half time is likely and they get the ball back. Illinois can’t stop them and they are self destructing on offense.

Only chance is if Ron Zook suddenly becomes a great game coach at halftime.

Denver reported Briscoe was out.

by hunter s. royal on Sep 5, 2009 4:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Nice, though I'm not getting that game.

ESPN2 is showing the Michigan game instead. I feel like I’m stuck in Cincinnati.
Okie State had a good finish to the half, though they may regret not getting the TD.

by hunter s. royal on Sep 5, 2009 4:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, it isn't an option for ESPN2 for ANYBODY.

Only Waco and North Carolina can even see the game. That’s when I really hate regional coverage on ABC.

Also, for some reason, ESPN2 isn’t showing us Oklahoma State vs. Georgia. So, I’m stuck just watching it on the computer.

Screw my life.

Hi Esty and lab,

Yeah, I’m in Lawrence, but I have no TV. Kate and I got feed up with Sunflower last year and got rid of cable. I get more done now, and we save $70 a month, but I really miss watching the Royals and the Jayhawks. The guy I normally watch games with has his mother in law visiting this weekend so that option is out.
